Yard debris is an optional service available to residents throughout urban Clark County. By recycling your yard debris instead of putting it in the garbage, you are reducing what we landfill, helping to create nutrient-rich compost and you may even save money by reducing your garbage cart size or pickups.

Contact us to learn more about this service!

Every year, Clark County residents throw away about 50,000 tons of food. In the landfill, food decomposes into methane, a harmful greenhouse gas. However, when food is used well, it can nourish people, animals and even the soil in the form of compost.

An average family of four wastes about $1,500 every year on uneaten food. Save money and reduce wasted food by learning to use food well. Here are some suggestions for food storage to make the most of your food.

Freezer: Freeze bread and put slices directly in the toaster. • Butter keeps for up to 9 months in the freezer. • Most fruits and vegetables freeze well. Blanch and dry vegetables first. Spread fruits and veggies in a single layer on a lined pan, freeze, then store frozen produce in air-tight containers or freezer bags. • Freeze leftovers for a future meal. • Freeze meat in single servings for easier prep. • Make sure to label and date frozen foods.

Fridge: Store produce that wilts, like carrots and celery, in the high-humidity drawer. Store produce that gets moldy, like fruit or bell peppers, in the low-humidity drawer. • The door is the warmest spot in the fridge, which is fine for condiments, but not for perishable items like milk. • Keep fresh herbs and asparagus stem-side down in a glass of water.

Cupboards: Store dried herbs, spices, grains, beans and cooking oil in a cool, dark and dry cupboard. The same goes for potatoes, onions and garlic; however, be sure to store potatoes and onions separately to prevent sprouting.

Countertop: Store produce like tomatoes, avocados and fruit on the counter until ripe, then store in the fridge. • Store apples and bananas separately from other fruits to slow ripening (to ripen produce faster, put it in a paper bag with an apple!).

Set up an "Eat This First" container or designate a section in your fridge for foods that need to be eaten soon, such as leftovers and partially used produce.

Prevent wasted food from entering the landfill and compost most of the remaining scraps! Learn the basics of backyard composting through the Master Composter Recycler program at clarkcountycomposts.org.

Your 2021-2022 guide to recycling right in Clark County

Inside:

Recycle your batteries at many locations in Clark County at no cost. The transfer stations accept most types of batteries.

Lithium-ion batteries are found in many common items, such as cell phones, laptops, tablets and power tools.

Never put batteries, or items with built-in batteries, in the garbage or recycle cart. Batteries can start fires in trucks and at the transfer stations.

Look up drop-off locations using RecycleRight in the smartphone app or at wcnorthwest.com.

Tape both ends of used household batteries, then place them in a clear bag on top of your recycle cart for safe disposal. Lithium-ion batteries are not accepted for curbside recycling.

Follow these simple guidelines to recycle right:

Battery RecyclingRecycling Guidelines

RESOURCES: Batteries have valuable metals and minerals that can be used again if recycled properly.

FIRE RISK: Batteries can explode when heated or damaged. Batteries can easily start a fire when disposed of incorrectly. Proper disposal reduces this risk.

SAFETY: Batteries contain materials that are harmful to public health and the environment when disposed of improperly. If batteries are not recycled properly, the heavy metals could leak out into water and soil.

Why it's important to recycle batteries properly:

Items should be empty, clean and dry.

••

Los artículos deben estar vacíos, limpios y secos.

Place items loose in the cart. Do not bag items.

••

Coloque los artículos sueltos en el carrito, no los embolse.

No sharp or heavy objects.

Không vứt đồ vật sắc nhọn hoặc nặng.

••

Sin artículos afilados o pesados.
