Ireland in order to source and supply semen from the

very best proven and young bulls, to meet the need

of members and others interested in Red Genetics.

Red Cattle Genetics offers the best selection of Red Genetics as all the bulls are selected for their

superior standards of production, type and index. The bulls offered in this catalogue include Pure

Shorthorns, Blended Shorthorns—Both Dairy and Beef, as well as other red breeds.

Cross Breeding: Shorthorn Breeders have been cross

breeding for the last 40 years, so it is a tried and tested

way of improving your stock, giving increased fertility with

excellent mobility and longevity.

Stars: The Star Brood Award Scheme benchmarks a Shorthorn cow on her ability to produce

consistent yields combined with fertility, longevity, type and successfully transmitting these

traits through to her progeny. Stars are awarded for gaining milk diplomas which incorporates constant

production with regular breeding. A star is also awarded when a cow reaches a lifetime yield of

50,000kgs, 75,000kgs and two stars for 100,000kgs. Every time a cow is classified excellent and any

progeny that achieves an excellent classification a star is also awarded.

Selection Criteria for Red Cattle Genetics

Red Cattle Genetics was established to provide top class Dairy Shorthorn genetics for use

in the dairy herd. The Directors meet 3 times a year to consider any prospective young

bulls which may be suitable for semen collection. The minimum selection criteria are that

the dam has to be classified VG or EX and have at least one production index of 110 or

greater. The bull himself is also inspected by the Directors to ensure he is of suitable

conformation. Other factors such as butterfat and protein percentage, genetic indexes of

parents, and pedigree are all considered before a bull is accepted for collection by RCG.

The stringent selection process has proved to be an extremely reliable measure of a young

bull’s expected genetic potential. Of the last four young bulls selected by RCG three have

returned initial proofs with a positive PLI index.

Red Cattle Genetics also markets semen on behalf of Dairy Shorthorn Society members

and these are listed as members bulls. These bulls are not selected by RCG Directors and

the information available for these bulls is as published in the catalogue.

Red Cattle Genetics also markets Beef Shorthorn semen along similar lines and Beef

Shorthorn Bulls can be found at the back of the brochure, the majority of which are

marketed on behalf of Beef Shorthorn Society members.

Guidance on the use of Sexed Semen

Selecting the correct animal

Sexed semen was initially designed for use on maiden heifers but over the past few years it has proven extremely successful when used

on cows. It is essential when selecting cows to serve to sexed semen that she is good condition and has good fertility history. Cows

that have had mastitis, held cleansings, are lameness or bad health should not be served with sexed semen. Sexed semen is not recom-

mended for use with synchronisation programmes where heifers or cows are bred using fixed time insemination.

Nutrition

From at least a month before the service period the aim is to get heifers & cows settled and in a stress free condition. Cows milking

heavily and losing condition are less likely to get in calf. Settle the animals onto a consistent diet, nutritionally balanced for energy,

protein and minerals preferably on a rising plane of nutrition. Do not make diet changes for one month before or after the service

period.

Heat Detection

Heifers should be moved into easily handled groups. Large groups can be difficult to handle and can cause stress. This also makes it

easier to spot heats. Observing heats is very important and we suggest the it is done 3 times a day for 15 minutes. Results have shown

for best conception rates serving 12 hours after the onset of a standing heat. Insemination should be as stress free as possible for the

animal. Handling Sexed Semen

1.Attention to detail is essential when handling sexed semen.

2.Use tweezers, never fingers to handle straws.

3.Never take out an individual straw to look at and then put back. It will almost certainly damage the sperm.

4.Check the temperature of the water in your thawing device with a thermometer.

5.Flick the straw to remove any trapped nitrogen.

6.Thaw the straw straight away at 37°C for 40 seconds.

7.Thoroughly dry the straw, water kills sperm.

8.Use clean straw cutters, or sharp scissors to cut off the sealed end.

9.Once thawed don't let the straw cool down again.

10.Pre-warm the AI equipment and keep it insulated until the insemination (especially in cold weather). 11.Animals should be inseminated within 5 minutes of removing from the tank.

12.Once thawed, straws cannot be re-frozen.

13.Do not split straws.
