instructor who inspired us to keep attending class and dancing to Patti LaBelle’s “New Attitude.”

However, after the birth of my fourth child, Maureen, I was diagnosed with post partum cardiomyopathy,

a rare condition that can occur after a virus attacks the heart and causes it to enlarge. Luckily, at my six-

week check up, the doctor told me I would not need a heart transplant. I was conned to my bed for

three months, unable to walk or lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk. As time went on, my heart

returned to its normal size and function and I take medication to ensure it stays that way. I was eager to

get back to my aerobics classes and eventually became t again.

I believe the YMCA is even more about family and community than it is about exercise. When my family

moved to Minnesota about seven years ago, I immediately started going to the Burnsville YMCA as a

way to see the community. I was amazed by the great sense of support at Jennie’s awesome TurboKick

class. Beyond being a fantastic workout with kickass music, it’s a place for people to come together to

have fun working out and support each other on our individual tness journeys. The Y has also become

a big part of my entire family’s life. While my son plays basketball downstairs, my daughters love PiYo

and Core Conditioning, and my wonderful husband is a fan of BodyPump and Cycling.

Now, with one grandchild and another on the way, being a t grandma is my personal goal. I have loved

seeing aerobics evolve over the years as the lyrical genius of Pitbull has replaced Patti LaBelle and yoga

pants have been swapped for leotards. But once again, I am lucky to have another adorable and inspira-

tional instructor: Jennie.

Fitness has always been an important part of my life. I’ve

been a member of the YMCA since I was seven years old

and attended swimming lessons in Chicago with my

siblings. I started doing aerobics classes after college

when I was looking for a fun way to stay t. Dancing to

Tina Turner in leotards was the perfect class for me.

During my thirties, my girlfriends and I stayed faithful to

our aerobics classes, mostly due to the hot male tness
