This summer I will be turning 65. I got my medical-cal card in the mail. The good news is that it will drastically cut the church expenses for providing medical coverage. Just so everyone knows: I have no plans on retiring any time soon.

How could I think of retiring with so much going on right now!

-This month we have erected a new welcome board, so that as non-members come onto our campus they can read a welcoming statement of who we are as a church, and can see upcoming events posted. We want people to know they are welcome here.

-We have erected a new Peace Pole. It says: May be prevail in the world. It is written in 8 languages: English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Samoan, Laotian, Norwegian, Filipino, and Korean. We want people of all backgrounds to know they are welcome here.

-We are beginning to explore cooperative ministry with St. Peter Lutheran Church in Santa Ana. It began with their “Tamales and Testimony” event here. We want to explore ways that their Spanish speaking members could help us better reach out to the Latino community around our church, how our musicians and pastors might do exchanges, how we could explore ways to break down barriers between Latino and Caucasian communities. I’m excited about ways that we could each help the other and together be a better witness to our communities.

-We are upgrading our facilities to make them more welcoming to the physically handicapped. Our sanctuary floors have been refurbished: NO MORE PEELING PAINT! We also now have 2 shorter pews on each side of the sanctuary that accommodate wheelchairs and walkers. One more way for us to be a welcoming community.

-Endter Hall is receiving a painting upgrade. The work is in progress at the time of this writing, but it already has brightened up the facility. It is a welcoming facility to members, rental groups, and visitors to our campus.

-Our swimming program begins the end of June. Once again our campus will be filled with children from the community. It is a wonderful program to benefit our community, and we seek to invite the children to VBS, and other activities. No summer doldrums here! I hope you all have a blessed summer.

God’s Blessing,

Pastor Brian

Reflections from the Pastor by Pastor Brian Taylor

Page 2 Redeemer Reflections

July 2017 Page 3

There are few things that I remember about the small confirmation class I

participated in at Benediction Lutheran Church in Tsawwassen, British

Columbia. I remember the pastor trying everything he could to get us, his

students, to pay attention. I remember lots of giggles and snacks. I remember a

deeply formative conversation about death on the day that Seattle-based rock

star Kurt Cobain died. But, mostly, I remember countless hours spent learning,

studying, and memorizing the Small Catechism. Perhaps you had a similar

experience with the Small Catechism in confirmation?

How much of it do you remember? Have you tested your Small Catechism knowledge recently?

Congregations all across the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America are taking the time to revisit

the Small Catechism in this 500th observation year of the Protestant Reformation. . Luther wrote the

Small Catechism for the instruction of laypeople. He intended it to be used at church and in the home

to instruct children in the faith, and to reinforce the faith in the hearts and minds of adults.

The catechism teaches the fundamentals of the Christian faith: the Ten Commandments, the Lord’s

Prayer, the Apostles’ Creed, the Sacrament of Baptism, the Sacrament of the Altar and the Office of

the Keys and Confession. This small book is well worth your time and study.

This summer I will be preaching a sermon series on the Small Catechism. It is my hope that we will

reengage with the material with fresh eyes and open hearts. We will read the material. We will pray

the material. And, we will refresh our knowledge of the theology which drastically changed the world

I look forward to taking this journey with you. In the meantime, I encourage you to dust off your

personal copies of the Small Catechism. If you don’t own one, there is a wonderful and FREE Small

Catechism app (for both Apple and Android) through Augsburg Fortress or the Google Play store.

Dig around in the information. Is there anything that is speaking to you in news ways since the last

time you read it?

Perhaps you have no idea what I’m talking about when I say “Small Catechism.” Do not fret. You

will not be left behind. This will be a great time to learn more about the fundamentals of our faith.

In praise and thanksgiving for all that has been and all that will be, we pray:

For a renewed sense of the free grace of God

For the living word of God to burn brightly in the church

For a bold, daring, and lively faith

For the unity of the church

For increased love of one another. AMEN.

Peace,

Intern Pastor Bekah

We are excited about welcoming Cindy Myers as the new director of Our Redeemer Preschool. Cindy has 18 years of experience in the field of preschool education. She has been a preschool director since 2009. This is what Cindy wrote on her job resume that impressed the school board: “There is no bigger or better lesson than to teach children about God’s love. I love to watch the lights come on for the children when they start to understand God’s love. I love the energy that the children bring to worshiping God; I love to learn about God through the children. I would love to bring fun and creative lessons to the children.” Cindy sees her job as a calling from God. She has a strong commitment to developmental learning, and will be a great addition to our staff. Cindy has been married to her husband Brandon for 15 years and they have a beautiful 8 year old daughter named Kamryn. She loves to plays soccer for Chelsea and loves animals. She also has a 5 month old son named Dominic. She writes: “I have been working in the Early Childhood field for 18 years and still every day is exciting and wonderfully different. I love walking into a classroom filled with children and hearing their laughs. I am excited to get to know all the children and their families.” Cindy begins her work on July 17th. She and the rest of the preschool staff will be installed on Sunday, September 10th.

Tape Guidelines We have new paint on all the walls in Endter Hall and would like to extend the life of the paint and

keep Endter Hall and our campus looking great!

Blue painters tape should be used if you are taping anything to the walls in any room in Endter Hall, the office, the preschool, the campus doors and all around our campus. Blue tape is available in the office, in the ushers cabinet in the church, and in the kitchen (check the all purpose drawer by the sink where coffee is made).

If you can’t find blue tape- DO NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE on the walls!

Command Hooks: use for bigger items and please take down when your event is over. Masking tape: Should NOT be used. It leaves residue and will take the paint off the walls. There is never a good reason to use masking tape

Duct Tape: Are you fixing a duct then it should be used-otherwise...DO NOT USE

Clear tape: Should only be used on the glass around campus

Please note that anything hung up with something other than blue painters tape will be taken down and thrown away.

The Men’s Fellowship of OUR REDEEMER hosted another exciting

member-friend Golf Outing on Saturday June 3rd at David L. Baker

Golf Course. We had 43 players on 11 teams including 9 family

groups, 8 women and 31 friends of members. We had 5 new players

for this tournament. The weather was good. Everyone seemed to

enjoy the golf and socializing. There are pictures in Endter Hall

lobby.

The Course was in excellent condition for good scoring with the team

of Pastor Brian, Pastor Carl, Pastor Brad, and Pastor Mike leading the

way with a 55. The team of Ray Moore, Nancy Moore, Eddie Barnes

and Alan Gitmed took second place. There were three additional

teams at 60 and under. Most of the teams were within 6 shots of

each other. There were lots of prizes for all with many local

restaurants providing complimentary meal certificates.

I would like to thank Brian Kallen who donated two Disneyland

Tickets which we raffled off. We raised $340.00 from the raffle to

give to the Men’s Fellowship to help support their Compassion

children. Thanks again to Brian. Of course, Pastor Brian won the

tickets.

Everyone was a winner this day. There were some newcomers this

year which is an encouraging outreach. We hope to see them again

and others at our next tournament for another day of fun.

Health Ministry

We had a very successful CPR/AED Class on May 20th with (14) participants led by Rob Pryce. It was an excellent class of information and participation. Everyone enjoyed it and appreciated learning CPR and how to use the AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Our church has an AED which is located in Endter Hall hanging on the wall between the bathrooms. Look for it the next time you are in Endter Hall in case someone would ask you to get it. The class was free and was provided by Hoag Hospital.

VBS 2017 July 24th-July 28th 8:45 am to 1:00 pm

Our Theme this year for VBS is Maker Fun Factory-Created by God, Built for a Purpose! A world where curious kids become hands on inventors who discover they're lovingly crafted by God! Our VBS week was moved to July so more students would be able to attend and help! We will have swimming this year and all of the other wonderful experiences.

This is an exciting year for VBS here at Our Redeemer! We will once again have St. Olaf joining us and do joint children's ministry. We have collaborated with these churches to make an amazing set and share resources! An amazing set has been made (stop by during VBS and see it or check out our Facebook Page to see it) and is making the rounds. Patty went to the training to see how it was built, know how to use it and see how to break it down and put it up along. We will receive the set from Hope Lutheran (Pastor Tim Edmondson's church) and move it in a box truck. Sunday, July 23rd we will be putting it together and fine tuning the lighting.

The set is on rotation and will be shared between 7 churches.

Would you like to help? Let Wendy Fitzharris or Patty Erickson know you are available and how you would like to help. We will be seeking craft and food items starting July 2nd. Check out the big board in the Narthex for items that would be a blessing to our VBS.
