TUESDAY, 17TH JANUARY, 2017 | BEGINNING OF TERM EDITION (REDEMPTION TERM)

TEACHABLE MOMENTSThese commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 6:6–7

Teachable moments are any time that you use situations to dialogue with your child about what’s going on—what he or she has seen, heard, or done. As this passage from Deuteronomy describes, teachable moments can be any time you and your child are together.

Christian poll master George Barna’s research echoes the scriptural definition: “We have found that most children learn through experiences—either having an eye-opening lesson or having a previously grasped lesson clarified and reinforced.” Have you ever been sitting with the family watching a movie or TV show when all of a sudden, something happens on-screen that you wish your child hadn’t seen or heard? Sometimes it is more appropriate not to make a big deal of it and hope the questionable content goes over the child’s head. However, if you do discuss the issue right away or follow up later, you are making use of a teachable moment.

Where Do I Look for Teachable Moments?Once you put yourself on the lookout for teachable moments, you’ll find them everywhere! Here are a few of the most common ways that teachable moments arise.1. Media. In our media-saturated culture, you’ll find teachable moments on TV shows and commercials, in the movies, on the Internet, in music, in video games, in magazines, and on billboards. When my kids were younger, we were watching an episode of Super why, when one of the show’s characters was afraid to go down a slide. The question posed to the characters and the viewers was, “How do we help someone who is afraid?” The answer given by the show was to “cheer” for their friend. This turned into a great discussion later that day as we drove home from the dentist.

We talked about how cheering is a great idea, but as Christians there are other ways we can help, such as praying for our friend or encouraging him with what the Bible says. I reminded the children of some helpful verses by prompting them with the beginnings of these verses and they filled in the rest. We quoted Psalm56:3, “When I am afraid, I will trust in you,” and Philipians 4:13, which says, “I can do everything through him who gives me strength.” I remember wishing that the discussion had come up on the way to the dentist because my poor little guy had been terrified of getting in the dentist’s chair for his checkup. His big sis did a great job cheering him on since that was fresh in her memory from watching the show, but it would have been neat to see how she used the biblical input from that teachable moment in that situation. Families with older children or teens will want to help them think critically from a biblical perspective about what they take in through the media. See the Take Action section under the topic Revenge for a good example.

Responsibility is defined in the dictionary as, "Involving personal accountability or ability to act without guidance or superior authority." A person is regarded as responsible when he is "capable of making moral or rational decisions on his own and, therefore, answerable for one's own behavior." The principle of responsibility is recognized on nearly every page of the Bible.

Choices Have ConsequencesIn the realm of the physical "for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." In the spiritual realm for every action there is a consequence. You are free to do whatever you want. However, you are not free of the consequences of your actions

Teach Your Children ResponsibilityJesus taught us how to teach responsibility. We can and must do so, for the good of the nation, for the good of the family, for the good of the church and, most importantly, for the good of our children.First, learn that one is responsible to the limits of his ability. Jesus taught that in the parables of the talents and the unfaithful servant (Matthew 25:15; Luke 12:47-48). Early training, therefore, should consist of gradually giving responsibilities to our children according to their newly acquired abilities (see: Galatians 4:1-2; I Corinthians 13:11).

Duties about the home should increase with age and skill with a view to making the child a useful adult when on his own.

Second, when responsibility is given, the recipient must be held accountable. Jesus taught this as well in the above mentioned parables (Luke 12:47 Matthew 18:23The one talent man was not punished because he did not do as well as the other two servants. He was punished because he did not do what he had the ability and, therefore, obligation to do.

A wise parent recognizes different levels of ability in his children and deals with each accordingly. But a fool fails to hold all equally accountable according to his individual ability. When parents do not make children give answer for their actions they eventually will have rebels with which to deal (I Samuel 2:22-26; 3:13).In order to teach responsibility it is necessary to let the young suffer the consequences of their choices. This is why the prophet said, "It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth" (Lamentations 3:27). When parents are giving gradual responsibility they are able to help assuage the severity of the consequences. Children learn that the consequences can be serious by learning young from the results of their lesser responsibilities.

It is better to learn that each man must bear his own burden (Galatians 6:5) when that burden is a household chore or a missed homework assignment than a job deadline or a utility bill.

Finally, parents must be an example in accepting responsibility (Job 19:4; Acts 25:11). Your children will never learn to be a mature, helpful, resourceful and responsible member of any community, if all they ever see is a parent that casts blame elsewhere refusing to accept responsibility miserably chaffing under the consequences of bad choices. Be responsible and your children will grow up to be responsible.

Choices often result in eternally significant consequences so we must choose in line with God’s principles. The herdsmen of Lot and of Abram were quarreling because there wasn’t adequate land to support all their flocks. So Abram gave Lot his choice of where to settle. Lot surveyed the land and decided to move down into the lush Jordan valley. That choice was the beginning of Lot’s gradual but steady spiritual decline. First he looked toward Sodom (13:10). Then he moved his tents near Sodom (13:12).

PAGE FIVE RESPONSIBILITY ...continued from page 4

Next we find him living in Sodom (14:12). Finally he is sitting in the gate of Sodom (19:1)--he was a city official. He lost his wife, barely escaped with his own life and his two daughters, and goes off the Old Testament page hiding in a cave where his daughters make him drunk and commit incest with him. The offspring of those disgraceful nights were the Moabites and the Ammonites, two of Israel’s perennial enemies. It all began with Lot’s choice to live near Sodom.

HOW TO BE A RESPONSIBLE PERSON AND FEEL GREAT!

When you agree to do something, do it. If you let people down, they'll stop believing you. When you follow through on your commitments, people take you seriously.

Answer for your own actions. Don't make excuses or blame others for what you do. When you take responsibility for your actions you are saying "I am the one who's in charge of my life."

Take care of your own matters. Don't rely on adults to remind you when you're supposed to be somewhere or what you're supposed to bring. You take the responsibility.

Be trustworthy. If somebody trusts you to borrow or take care of something, take care of it. If somebody tells you something in confidence, keep it to yourself. It's important for people to know they can count on you (How do we differentiate between this and when the child is being abused).

Always use your head. Think things through and use good judgment. When you use your head you make better choices. That shows your parents they can trust you.

Don't put things off. When you have a job to do, do it. Doing things on time helps you take control of your life and shows that you can manage your own affairs.

....concluded.

CRITERIA FOR GIVING MOST IMPROVED PUPIL(S) AWARDManagement has decided to clear the air on some assumptions and misconceptions about the Most Improved Pupil(s) Award. For the Primary Section, comparison of differences in the results of pupils from Salvation Term to Overcomer’s Term determines who gets this award. This means the pupil with the highest percentage/margin of improvement in results is given the award. This suggests that in reality, even the first placed pupil in a class could still emerge as the most improved pupil if he/she has the highest margin of improvement from the previous results.

For the Nursery Section, formative and summative criteria are employed.Children are observed at entry point and at the end of the term to assess the level of growth and development both in academics and social skills such as; Relational and attitudinal skills. We wish to debunk the claim that the award is derogatory rather, it is an award given to celebrate hard work and consistency. Our esteemed parents are encouraged to work with us by constantly monitoring and encouraging their children to ensure consistency in improvement.

Thank you.Management.
