Saw his glory a covenant

IN THE CARE OF THE AUGUSTINIANS

The vineyard was often used in Scripture as a symbol of Israel, God’s people. God is

imaged as the owner of the vineyard who attends to it with great care—planting,

cultivating, feeding and pruning the vines to make them fruitful and abundant. Israel

will be judged on what fruit it bears or fails to bear. So too will we be judged on how

fruitful our lives are.

serve as a wake-up call about how we live our lives. How

3. Perhaps there have been times when you saw yourself like

the tree in the parable – useless, merely a waste of space.

Think of friends who came to you at such a time, people

who saw your potential and were prepared to give you

another chance, people who also dug the soil around you

and gave you the help you needed to grow. Perhaps in your

turn you have been able to do this for others.

The responsibility of love is that we bear one another’s burdens. But this responsibility, which is not an eternal one, leads doubtless, to an eternal blessedness in which there will be no

burdens for us that we will be required to bear for one another. Now, however, while we are in this life, that is, on this journey, let us bear one another’s

burdens so that we can achieve that life which is free of every burden. Eighty-three Diverse Questions, 71

“The barque of the Church is not mine, nor ours, but His”

(Benedict XVI—farewell address Rome 28th Feb. 2013)

How does one evaluate the efficacy of a pontificate,

especially when not afforded the benefit of hindsight, but

stand in close proximity?

Since Joseph Ratzinger, the then Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the

Faith, close associate and aid of John Paul II, and Dean of the College of Cardinals

was elected as Pope on 19th April 2005, he has represented the face of the Church

for many people both within and beyond the flock of the faithful.

In many ways he was emblematic of the journey the Church had made since the

heady days of the Second Vatican Council, when he was noted among the many prominent theologians and

experts at the time, and who then came to assume a more central role in the Church’s administration and

governance.

For some his pontificate might appear a betrayal or turning his back on the enunciated principles of the Council,

with a sense of greater centralisation and rigidity, a closing of doors rather than an opening of windows, and a

more defensive and reactionary time in the Church’s contemporary history. His intellectual rigorism and discipline

were never in doubt. But anyone assuming the office at his advanced age was going to find the demands of

steering and challenges from both from within and without to the “Barque of Peter” considerable and daunting.

The surprising and seemingly sudden decision to resign from office caught many off guard but has been met with

understanding and generous praise from most. The memory of his failing predecessor in his last days and the

vision of a rudderless vessel may have played a part in his thinking but we will not know. The humility of his

words quoted above and his stated intentions do offer an example of magnanimity and wisdom from which we

might all benefit. The Church is indeed the ‘barque of Christ’ who will surely not abandon his own.
