WHY ARE WE INCLUDING A FIRED CARTRIDGE CASEWITH EVERY RUGER PISTOL AND REVOLVER?

Certain states and jurisdictions now require that all newly manufactured pistolsand revolvers must be accompanied by a cartridge case, which has been test firedfrom that gun at the factory. The case must be placed in a sealed containerbearing certain information concerning this test cartridge.

At the time of retail sale in those jurisdictions, firearms dealers must forwardsuch test cartridge to a designated destination such as their State PoliceLaboratory. As independent Ruger Distributors have nationwide markets withoutterritorial restrictions, we have decided to include a fired cartridge case with allnew Ruger pistols and revolvers, to minimize the possibility of inadvertent non-compliance with these laws.

Retail customers located in other states, where laws or regulations do not requirethe dealer to so act, may be assured that the fired cartridge case they receive withthe firearm at the time of retail purchase is proof that your new Ruger firearmhas undergone our normal test firing procedures during manufacture.

GENERAL INFORMATIONAND MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The RUGER® REDHAWK® revolver is a double-action firearm which isspecifically designed for heavy Magnum cartridges and embodies manyadvanced features. The crane and cylinder assembly of the REDHAWK®

revolver locks directly into the frame, both at the rear of the cylinder and atthe front of the crane. The ejector rod serves as an ejector - it does not rotatewith the cylinder. The hammer and trigger are powered by opposite ends ofthe same coil spring which is in the frame behind the trigger. Thecomponents which link the trigger and hammer to this spring transmitspring energy with minimum friction loss. All of this mechanism is

readily removable without tools and dismantles, along with thecylinder/crane group, into a small number of subassemblies for inspectionand cleaning (See Figure 1 and Figure 2, below).

The internal parts are installed either through the top or bottom of the grip-frame; therefore, no side plate is needed. The resulting double solid framecontributes greatly to the extraordinary strength and reliability of theserevolvers.

The RUGER® REDHAWK® revolver has a transfer bar which is connecteddirectly to the trigger. The transfer bar - which is raised into firing positionas the trigger is pulled to the rear - transmits the energy of the hammerblow to the firing pin. The transfer-bar safety system provides that thehammer blow can be transmitted to the firing pin only when the trigger ispulled all the way to the rear. This is a positive internal safety feature.

Despite their many highly desirable features, Ruger revolvers–as with allfirearms–must at all times be handled with strict attention to correct safetypractices, and be inspected frequently to assure the gun is working properly.

Discharging firearms in poorlyventilated areas, cleaning firearms, orhandling ammunition may result inexposure to lead and other substancesknown to the state of California tocause birth defects, reproductiveharm, and other serious physicalinjury. Have adequate ventilation at alltimes. Wash hands thoroughly afterexposure.

RUGER® REDHAWK® revolvers are marked on the barrel with thename of the cartridge for which the revolver is chambered. Revolvers markedfor the .44 Magnum cartridge will chamber the .44 Rem. Magnum cartridgeand the .44 S&W Special cartridge. Revolvers marked for the .45 Coltcartridge will chamber only .45 (“Long”) Colt ammunition. Caliber .45ACP(Automatic Colt Pistol) ammunition should not be used in these revolvers.Revolvers marked for the .357 Magnum cartridge will chamber the .357Magnum cartridge and the .38 Special cartridge. Revolvers marked for the.41 Magnum cartridge will chamber the .41 Remington Magnum cartridgeonly. Do not use .41 Colt cartridges in these revolvers. Ruger revolvers aredesigned for use with cartridges of the correct caliber which aremanufactured in accordance with the U.S. Industry Standards. Be certain touse proper cartridges of the correct caliber. See “Care and Cleaning”, p. 20for important information on chamber cleaning.

HANDLINGCARRYING: The Redhawk revolver can be carried with all chambers loaded.When the hammer and trigger are fully forward, the transfer-bar is loweredout of its firing position and the hammer rests directly on the frame.

WARNING –HANDLINGIf the trigger is held to the rear, the guncan fire if the hammer strikes thetransfer bar. Note that it need not be adeliberate effort to pull the trigger. Anysituation where the trigger attains itsrearward position and permits thetransfer bar to be interposed between thehammer and the firing pin can cause thecartridge under the firing pin todischarge.

DRY-FIRING“Dry Firing” is practicing the trigger pull of the empty revolver for practiceand familiarity. The Redhawk revolver can be dry-fired without damage tothe firing pin or internal components.

Be sure that the revolver is unloaded before handling. Be sure you alwayspoint the revolver in a safe direction, even when dry-firing for practice. Donot dry-fire the revolver with the plastic ‘safety disc’ on the cylinder.

1. Press the crane latch and guide cylinder out of frame to the left to itsloading position (See Figure 3).

When correctly operated, the cylindercannot be opened when the hammer iscocked, and the hammer/triggermechanism is not able to be operateduntil the cylinder is locked shut.However, this safety interlock can beintentionally defeated if the crane latch isdepressed and the hammer is thencocked while the cylinder is opened. Ifthe cylinder is then shut when thehammer is cocked, the hammer may falland the gun may fire.

2. Insert cartridges and gently close cylinder, making sure it is securelylatched. Do not “flip” the cylinder open or shut.

5. DO NOT HOLD THE REVOLVER BY THE BARREL OR CYLINDER WHENFIRING.

3. The revolver is now ready to fire, either “double-action” by pulling thetrigger through its complete arc for each shot, or “single-action” bycocking the hammer and then pulling the trigger for each shot. Thetrigger pull is somewhat shorter and lighter when the revolver is firedsingle action, and this is the preferred mode for precise shots or targetshooting.

4. DO NOT TOUCH THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOU ARE READY TO FIRE.

When firing in the double actionmode, be sure that the trigger isreleased completely to its fullyforward position before pulling thetrigger for a subsequent shot. Ifthe trigger finger is allowed tointerfere with the full recovery ofthe trigger (preventing it frommoving through about the lastone-eighth inch of its forwardmovement), the trigger cannot bepulled again for another discharge.The trigger must be fully releasedafter each shot is fired. Thischaracteristic is found in allmodern double-action revolversand “double-action only” pistols.

TO UNCOCK (DECOCK) THE REVOLVERIf your revolver is cocked, and you wish to let the hammer down to itsforward position (against the frame), proceed as follows: USE EXTREMECARE WHEN ATTEMPTING TO DECOCK THE REVOLVER, AS THE THUMBSLIPPING DURING THIS PROCESS CAN RESULT IN AN ACCIDENTALDISCHARGE IF THE TRIGGER IS HELD TO THE REAR.

1. Make certain that the revolver is pointed in a safe direction (See Rule 2,Page 35).

2. Make certain both hands are dry and not impeded in any way – gloves,bandages, cold, etc.

3. Grasp the revolver (if right handed) so that the thumb and forefinger ofyour left hand are firmly holding the frame, forward of the trigger guard.Thus, your left hand is in full control of the revolver (See Figure 4A, Page15).

4. Place your right thumb firmly on the hammer spur and, with your thumbsecurely in control of the hammer, squeeze the trigger only enough topermit the hammer to ‘break free’ of the trigger. At that instant,IMMEDIATELY RELEASE THE TRIGGER and then slowly permit thehammer, STILL SECURE UNDER YOUR THUMB, to move fully forward toits resting position against the frame. NOTE: It is imperative that fingerpressure be removed from the trigger just as soon as it is free of thehammer. Then, properly, the trigger and hammer will move towards theirfully forward rest positions together (See Figure 4B, Page 15).

WARNING–FIRINGWhen firing the Redhawk revolver, besure all persons are a safe distance to therear of the shooter. When fired, allrevolvers discharge hot gas and particlesof lead, powder grains, or lubricantthrough the clearance gap between thecylinder and the rear of the barrel at highspeed. This can injure a person who isstanding too close to the revolver.

When firing the Redhawk revolver (orany revolver), always be certain thatnothing – including your hands – is inthe path of the hot gas and particleswhich are discharged from the front andsides of the cylinder.

When shooting, adequate eye protectionis essential. Shooters and bystandersmust wear shooting glasses. Hearingprotection must also be worn. Exposureto shooting noise can damage hearing.

Practice this important gun handling skill with an unloaded revolver untilyou have developed the proper control and ‘touch’ to decock your revolversafely. The key to safe decocking is having the weight of the revolvercontrolled with one hand, while the thumb and forefinger of the ‘shootinghand’ control the hammer and trigger. Improperly restraining the triggerduring this procedure may result in the hammer not resting fully against theframe. If this should occur, carefully repeat the procedure for decocking,steps 1–4 again.

1. Uncock the revolver (See pp. 10 - 11).

2. Press crane latch. Guide cylinder out left of frame as for loading. Therevolver now cannot be fired.

3. Push head of ejector rod smartly toward rear of cylinder until it stops.This action will extract cartridges or fired cases. Do not eject livecartridges onto any surface where a primer might strike a solid objectand discharge the cartridge.

4. Check to be sure all chambers are empty.

B. When hammer is free, IMMEDIATELYrelease trigger (3). Then lower hammerslowly to its resting position completelydown against frame (4).

NOTE: When ejecting fired cartridge cases, position the revolver at ahigh angle so the cases will come fully out of the chambers and not slipunder the ejector. This high angle positioning is not necessary whenejecting unfired cartridges.

DISASSEMBLYRead instructions before disassembling a gun.

1. BE CERTAIN THE REVOLVER IS UNLOADED BEFORE DISASSEMBLY.

2. Using a properly fitting screwdriver,remove grip screw and lift grip panelsfrom frame.

3. Cock the hammer. Insert disassemblypin about one half its length into thehole at the rear of the mainspring strut.(The disassembly pin is carried in thehole in the grip panel locator). Lacking adisassembly pin, any similar instrumentwill serve (See Figure 5).

4. With thumb on hammer spur,squeeze trigger allowing hammerto go fully forward. Remove thehammer pivot assembly. With thegun muzzle pointing down, slowlylift the hammer upward and out ofthe frame (See Figure 7, p. 18). Itmay be necessary to move themainspring lever forward in orderto cause the hammer link hook todetach from the mainspring lever(See Figure 6 a.). If carefulmanipulation of the hammer andtrigger does not disengage thehook, disengage it with the tip of a jeweler’s screwdriver or similar devicewhen the hook is in a near-off position.

5. Push the lever pivot pin out with a small punch or nail and remove themainspring lever from the frame with mainspring and strut intact.Removal can best be accomplished by twisting the lever slightly as theassembly is drawn from the frame toward the rear (See Figure 6 b.).CAUTION: Do not remove disassembly pin at this point! Doing so willpermit the mainspring to fly off its strut with great force and may causeinjury. The pin is to be removed only after the assembly is correctlyinstalled in the revolver during reassembly.

6. Pull trigger guard latch to the rear (using mainspring lever) andsimultaneously pull trigger guard assembly, intact, out from bottom offrame (See Figure 8).

7. Open cylinder and pull cylinder and crane assembly out of frame to thefront.

8. Further disassembly is not essential for normal cleaning purposes. Anyfurther disassembly should only be undertaken by factory servicepersonnel.

The information below applies only to those revolvers in which the HammerLink (KH06900) is assembled to the hammer with the link hook pointingdownward, as illustrated in Figure 10 below.

If your revolver has a hammer link with the hook-opening pointingdownward, follow the Disassembly instructions only through the firstsentence of numbered paragraph 4 on page 17 At that stage of disassembly(with the hammer forward) proceed as follows:

1. Unlatch the hook of the hammer link from the top end of the mainspringlever (See Figure 9 a., below).

2. With the trigger pulled, remove the hammer pivot assembly and hammer(See Figure 10). At this stage of disassembly, return to the Disassemblyinstructions on page 13 and pick up with numbered paragraph 5.

NOTE: For improved performance the Hammer Link should be assembled tothe hammer with the hook-opening positioned upward (towards thehammer).

A gun owner can readily change the hammer link to the ‘pointing upward’position. Use proper size punch to drive out the hammer cross pin. Removethe hammer link and reposition it. Then, carefully hammer in the cross pinso that it is flush with both sides of the hammer. The pin must not protrudefrom either side!

For those who would prefer the link to be repositioned by the factory, sendthe hammer only via Insured Mail to the Newport, New Hampshire ServiceDepartment. Attach a tag to the hammer showing your name and addressand the words “Please reverse link”.

REASSEMBLYAGAIN, BE CERTAIN REVOLVER IS UNLOADED!

Before starting reassembly, be certain that all components and the inside ofthe frame are thoroughly clean. In particular the tongue on the front of thetrigger guard and its mating recess in the frame must be completely clean.

1. Replace cylinder and crane assembly in frame and close cylinder.

2. Hook front of trigger guard into recess in frame (See Figure 11). Alignpawl in its recess in the frame and be sure transfer bar is in correctposition in rear of firing pin (See Figure 12). Using mainspring lever,withdraw trigger guard latch and swing trigger guard into position inframe. Then allow latch to re-engage. If solid resistance is felt whenswinging trigger guard into frame, or if trigger guard will not lock intoposition, re-check position of pawl and transfer-bar (See Figure 12).

NOTE: At this point in reassembly trigger should function to rotate andlock the cylinder. Pull the trigger a few times, returning it to its forwardposition by hand, to check proper functioning, as always with the revolverpointed in a safe direction.

3. With the trigger forward, replacemainspring lever with mainspringand strut into frame. Be sure thatthe front end of the mainspringstrut is properly positioned on thetrigger link at the rear of thetrigger (positioning can be seen bylooking down through hammerslot). Then replace lever pivot pin(See Figure 13).

4. With trigger in rearward position, and gunmuzzle pointing upward, slowly insert hammer into frame, paying closeattention to the position of the hook on the hammer link. The mainspringlever should be forward to allow space for the hook to engage the pin inthe mainspring lever. If the hook does not engage the pin, use a jeweler’sscrewdriver or similar tool to accomplish the connection.

5. Squeeze trigger and lower thehammer into position. (SeeFigure 14. It shows the hookcorrectly engaged.) Align thehammer hole with the hole in theframe and insert the hammerpivot.

6. Cock the hammer and removedisassembly pin from rear end ofmainspring strut. Replacedisassembly pin into hole in grip panellocator. Uncock the revolver.

7. Replace grip panels and grip screw.

8. Open and close cylinder. Function the trigger and hammer single actionand double action to be certain that all parts are working properly.

CARE AND CLEANINGALWAYS BE CERTAIN THE REVOLVER IS UNLOADED BEFORE CLEANING.

The internal mechanism of the Redhawk revolver can be lubricated withoutdisassembly. A few drops of light oil recommended as suitable for firearms,applied periodically about the various frame openings, will work its way intothe mechanism parts. The exterior of the revolver and the bore andchambers should be thoroughly cleaned and then wiped with an oily cloth ifthe gun is to be stored. Do not apply excess lubrication.

Firing a revolver with oil, grease, or anyother material even partially obstructingthe bore may result in damage to therevolver and serious injury to the shooterand those nearby.

Do not spray or apply lubricants directly onammunition. If the powder charge of acartridge is affected by the lubricant, it maynot be ignited, but the energy from theprimer may be sufficient to push the bulletinto the bore where it may become lodged.Firing a subsequent bullet into theobstructed bore may damage the revolverand cause serious injury or death to theshooter and those nearby. Use lubricantsproperly. You are responsible for the propercare and maintenance of your firearms.

IMPROPER LUBRICATIONDESTROYS GUNS

If lead bullet loads are fired extensively, lead build-up may cause cylinderbinding. Lubricate the cylinder crane gap with Break-Free® CLP or someother lubrication which meets mil. spec. Mil-1-63460 to prevent thiscondition.

To clean the revolver after firing, swing the cylinder out and clean the barrelfrom the muzzle by running a cleaning rod with a solvent coated patchthrough the bore several times. A bronze wire brush (of correct size for guncaliber) attached to the cleaning rod should then be pushed the full lengthof the bore several times. Again swab the bore with a solvent coated patch.Then wipe the rod clean and, using a dry patch, swab the bore until it isclean. Examine the bore to be sure that no fouling remains. Repeat theabove procedure for each of the six chambers.

Chambers must be thoroughly scrubbed to remove build-up of bullet metaland firing residue. A dirty chamber can prevent full seating of a cartridge,which in turn causes the cylinder to bind. DO NOT APPLY EXCESSIVE OILTO UNDERSIDE OF EJECTOR – AREA SHOULD BE WIPED DRY WITHOILY CLOTH. Also, the underside of the ejector (‘star’) and the area of thecylinder where the ejector seats, must be clean. Dirt can prevent the ejectorfrom fully seating. That condition can cause hard closing of the cylinder andinterfere with proper cylinder rotation.

STORAGEGUNS SHOULD NOT BE STORED LOADED!

Do not keep your revolver in a leather, fabric or canvas holster when it is stored.These materials attract moisture, even though the holster may appear to beperfectly dry.

TO RENDER THE REVOLVER INOPERATIVE FOR SAFE STORAGE

With the muzzle pointed in a safe direction, press the cylinder latch and swing thecylinder outward. Check to be sure that each chamber is completely unloaded!With a coin or screwdriver, unscrew the grip panels and remove the grips. Cock thehammer and then insert the disassembly pin into the hole at the bottom of themainspring strut. Uncock the hammer, remove the hammer strut from the frame,remove the hammer pivot from the frame, and lift the hammer out of the top ofthe frame. Use a screwdriver to depress the trigger housing latch and remove thetrigger assembly from the bottom of the frame.

Store the hammer and the trigger assembly in different locations from the frame.When disassembled in this manner, the revolver is inoperable. It is impossible tofire the revolver until the trigger assembly and the hammer have been correctlyreassembled into the frame.

Never place or store any firearm insuch a manner that it may bedislodged. Firearms should always bestored securely and unloaded, awayfrom children and careless adults. Usethe locking device originally suppliedwith this firearm for storage.

The use of a locking device or safetylock is only one aspect of responsiblefirearms storage. For increased safety,firearms should be stored unloaded andlocked in a location that is bothseparate from their ammunition andinaccessible to children and any otherunauthorized person.

To reassemble the revolver for firing, carefully reinsert the trigger housing intothe frame. Place the hammer into the top of the frame, and reinsert the hammerpivot pin. Cock the hammer, reinstall the mainspring strut, and remove the

CARE OF STAINLESS STEEL REVOLVERSRevolvers made of stainless steel are more resistant to corrosion than bluedsteel revolvers. However, in the interest of proper operation and long life ofyour revolver, inspect it frequently and clean, lubricate and apply anappropriate rust preventative.

Sometimes surface discoloration may be noted, particularly in the grip areaof stainless steel revolvers, resulting from perspiration. Contact with sometypes of holsters can also cause stains or rusting. Rusting may also occur asa result of the revolver being exposed to moisture, humidity, salt air orchemicals.

Minor discoloration can usually be removed by rubbing the stained area withan abrasive ink eraser, crocus cloth, or a “metal polishing” compound. Whenusing any of these abrasives, proceed with care and use light pressure toachieve a blending of ‘color’ with those areas that are not discolored.

External surfaces of the barrel, frame and cylinder should be cleaned andwiped dry after use or after exposure to adverse conditions. If the revolver isto be stored, coat it with a light film of oil or preservative. Where therevolver is in continuing use, and the presence of oil or grease would beobjectionable, then the external surface can be coated (after cleaning anddrying) with a paste wax formulated for use on metals. Apply the waxsparingly, allow time for it to dry hard, then buff lightly with a soft cloth.When applying the wax, take care that it does not get into the mechanism oron the functioning parts such as the hammer, trigger, crane latch, etc. Aproperly applied hard wax coating will not interfere with gun handling and itwill provide a measure of protection.

ATTACHING RUGER SCOPE RINGSOn the underside of each mounting ring assembly there is a locating “tab”.By reference to this “tab”, the mounting ring can be assembled to the scopeso that the tab will fit correctly into the recess on the top of the barrel.

Disassemble one ring and reassemble over the scope body between the turretand the eyepiece so that the clamp nut (D-73) is positioned to the left of thescope.

Install the four top screws. Do not tighten.

disassembly pin from the mainspring strut. Lower the hammer and replace thegrips on the revolver. The revolver is now reassembled and can be loaded andfired normally.

While the revolver is less likely to be used by unauthorized persons whendisassembled in the above manner, it is always safest to store a firearm withthe supplied locking device correctly installed, or to store the firearm in a gunsafe or other secure location, away from children and unauthorized adults.Guns should always be stored securely, unloaded and separate from theirammunition.

SIGHTSThe Redhawk revolver is provided with an insert front sight. To change thefront sight, depress the spring-loaded plunger in the front of the barrel rib witha small punch and lift rear of sight blade. The adjustable rear sight has a whiteoutline blade. Each click of the rear sight adjustment screws (either windage orelevation) will move the point of impact of the bullet approximately 3/4” at adistance of 25 yards. Move the rear sight in the direction you desire the bulletto move on the target. The suggested sight picture is shown below. See“Attaching Ruger Scope Rings”, p. 23.

Disassemble the other ring and install it on the forward section of the scopetube with the clamp nut positioned to the left of the scope. Install the fourtop screws. Again, do not tighten.

Assemble the rings to the barrel with the locating “tabs” engaging therecesses in the top surface of the barrel. Tighten the clamp nuts so that therings are locked to the semi-circular cuts on the sides of the barrel. Rotatethe scope until crosshairs are aligned properly, and slide scope to desired eyerelief.

Then tighten the eight top screws a bit at a time to grip the scope body.Sight in according to the direction with your scope.

NOTE: The Hammer Pivot Assembly (Part No. H01600 or KH01600) tab fitsinto a mortise on the right side of the frame of most of the Redhawkrevolvers. However, during a change in production processing of frames in1983, several thousand frames were made with the mortise on the left side ofthe frame. A Redhawk revolver having the mortise on the left side of theframe is in all other respects the same as the version which has the mortisein the right side.

THE BASIC RULES OF SAFE FIREARMS HANDLINGWe believe that Americans have a right to purchase and use firearms forlawful purposes. The private ownership of firearms in America istraditional, but that ownership imposes the responsibility on the gunowner to use his firearms in a way which will ensure his own safety andthat of others. When firearms are used in a safe and responsible manner,they are a great source of pleasure and satisfaction, and represent afundamental part of our personal liberty.

Firearms do not cause accidents! Firearms accidents are almost alwaysfound to have been the result of carelessness, or ignorance on the part ofthe shooter of the basic rules of safe gun handling.

The following rules must be observed by gun users at all times. Safe gunhandling is not just desirable, it is absolutely essential to your safety, thesafety of others, and the continuation of gun ownership and sportshooting as we know it today.

1. LEARN THE MECHANICAL AND HANDLINGCHARACTERISTICS OF THE FIREARM YOU ARE USING.

Not all firearms are the same. Themethod of carrying and handlingfirearms varies in accordance withthe mechanical provisions foravoiding accidental discharge andthe various proper procedures forloading and unloading. No personshould handle any firearm withoutfirst having thoroughly familiarizedhimself with the particular type offirearm he is using, and with safegun handling in general.

2. ALWAYS KEEP THEMUZZLE POINTED IN ASAFE DIRECTION.Be sure of the bullet stop behindyour target, even when dry-firing.Never let the muzzle of a firearmpoint at any part of your body or atanother person. This is particularlyimportant when loading orunloading a firearm. In the event ofan accidental discharge, no injurycan occur as long as the muzzle ispointing in a safe direction. A safedirection means a direction whichwill not permit a discharged bullet

to strike a person, or to strike an object from which the bullet mayricochet.

A safe direction must take into account the fact that a bullet maypenetrate a wall, ceiling, floor, window, etc., and strike a person ordamage property. Make it a habit to know exactly where the muzzle ofyour gun is pointing whenever you handle it, and be sure that you arealways in control of the direction in which the muzzle is pointing, evenif you fall or stumble. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are readyto shoot.

3. FIREARMS SHOULD BE UNLOADED WHEN NOT INUSE.

Firearms should be loaded onlywhen you are in the field or on thetarget range or shooting area,ready to shoot. Firearms andammunition should be securelylocked in safes, racks or cabinets,or by using the locking devicesupplied with the firearm, whennot in use. Ammunition shouldsafely be stored separate fromfirearms. Store your firearms outof sight of visitors and children. Itis the gun owner’s responsibility tobe certain that children and

persons unfamiliar with firearms cannot gain access to firearms,ammunition, or components.

4. BE SURE THE BARREL ISCLEAR OF OBSTRUCTIONSBEFORE SHOOTING.

Even a bit of mud, snow or excesslubricating oil or grease in thebore may cause the barrel tobulge, or even burst on firing, andcan cause serious injury to theshooter and bystanders. Be surethat you are using ammunition ofthe proper caliber and loading forthe gun you are using. If thereport or recoil on firing seems weak, or doesn’t seem quite right,CEASE FIRING IMMEDIATELY, unload your firearm, and check to besure that no obstruction has become lodged in the barrel.

5. BE SURE OF YOURTARGET BEFORE YOUSHOOT.Don’t shoot unless you knowexactly where your bullet is goingto strike. Be sure of the bulletstop behind your target, evenwhen dry-firing with an unloadedgun. If you are in the fieldhunting, do not fire at amovement or noise. Take the timeto be absolutely certain of yourtarget before you pull the trigger.

6. WEAR SHOOTINGGLASSES AND HEARINGPROTECTORS WHENYOU SHOOT.All shooters should wearprotective shooting glasses andadequate hearing protectors whenshooting. Exposure to shootingnoise can damage hearing, andadequate eye protection whenshooting is essential.

7. NEVER CLIMB A TREEOR FENCE WITH ALOADED FIREARM.Put the firearm down carefullybefore climbing a fence, andunload it before climbing ordescending a tree or jumpingover a ditch or other obstruction.Never pull or push a loadedfirearm toward yourself oranother person. When in doubt,or whenever you are about to doanything awkward, unload your gun!

8. DON’T SHOOT AT AHARD SURFACE, OR ATWATER.Bullets can glance off manysurfaces like rocks or the surfaceof water and travel inunpredictable directions withconsiderable velocity.

9. NEVER TRANSPORT ALOADED FIREARM.Firearms should always beunloaded before being placed in avehicle. A suitable carrying caseor scabbard should by used tocarry an unloaded firearm to andfrom the shooting area.

10. AVOID ALCOHOLICBEVERAGES WHENSHOOTING.Don’t drink until the day’sshooting is over. Handlingfirearms while under theinfluence of alcohol in any form,or medications that could affectyour judgment or co-ordination,constitutes a criminal disregardfor the safety of others.

A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF AN EXTRAORDINARYACHIEVEMENT: RUGER FIREARMS

One of the few American firearms manufacturers whose managementhas remained in the same family since starting in business, Sturm,Ruger & Company, Inc., had its beginning in a small machine shopoccupying a rented frame building in Southport, Connecticut. InJanuary, 1949, with an initial investment of only $50,000 and an idea,William B. Ruger and Alexander M.
