Fire/Rescue RecentlyafriendneededmedicalassistanceinahurryonaSaturdayafternoon.Withinminutesofbeingcalledat911,theEvergreenFire/Rescueambulancewasonthescene.AlsoarrivingwereseveralFire/Rescuevolunteers,readytoprovidewhateverhelpwasneeded. Aftertheambulanceleftforthehospital,thevolunteersstayeduntiltheywereassuredthatnooneelseneededatten-tion. AsIthankedthemfortheirimmediateresponse,Ifeltsogratefulthatvolunteersinourcommunityarewillingtogiveoftheirtime,wheneverneeded,tohelpothers. Andafewdayslater,atabout5a.m.,Ispottedseveralgrassfiresacrossthevalleyandcalledthem.Again,veryquickly,theFire/Rescuetrucksandvolunteersarrivedandputoutthefires. Inthissummerofextremedrought,theriskoffireisgreat.

TheCommunityWeedAwarenessCampaignhasbeenbusythissummerworkingtowarditsgoalofnonoxiousweedsinthemountaincommunity.Thelocalresponsetothisendeavorhasbeenveryencouraging. OnJune21,the11thannualWeedPullwasheldatEvergreenLakeandinvolved45localcitizensarmedwithspadesandclippers.Theyworkedfrom8a.m.untilnooneradicatingunwantedweedsaroundthearea. Another60peoplecamewithplantsfromtheiryardsseekinginformationfromexpertsSylviaBrocknerandPamLittle. OnJuly12,CWACparticipatedinastatewideproject,“PullingforColo-rado,”bysendingPatCarterandSylviaRobertsontotheSafewaystoreinIdahoSpringsforaweededucationday.TheyhadexperthelpfromTedBrown,ClearCreekCountyweedsupervisor. Previouspublicityandthedisplayofnoxiousweedsandliteraturewasanat-tractionthatleftthethreewithlittletimetorestfromalltheinquiries. Thenexttaskwas“PullingforDem-ocrats”sponsoredbytheDemocratic

PartyfromClearCreekCounty.Mar-ilynKaussnerandSylviaRobertsonrepresentedCWAC,joiningthemintheirefforttocleartheinfestationofnoxiousweedsintheparkadjacenttoClearCreekHighSchool. ThefinalprojectfortheseasonwastheWeedandWineeventatEvergreenLakeonAug.14.Thiswastherewardforallthosewhohavefaithfullydonetheirpartinkeep-ingtheareaaroundthelakeclearofweeds. TheworkoftheCWACcommitteedoesnotstophere.Theycontinuetomeetthroughouttheyearworkingouttheirplanofattackonnoxiousweedsfor

ThepicturesoftheyoungmooseinElkMeadowinthelocalpaperwouldseemtoconfirmit.Weheardmoreofthesamecallsacoupleofmorningslater.Iamonsuperalertwhenoutwiththedog. WhenImovedherefromMassachu-settssixyearsago,Ihadnoideahowmuchwildlifeaboundedintheneigh-borhood,infrontandbackyards,andonnearbyhikingtrails.Weareblessedtohavethesecrittersaround,butIcau-tioneveryonetokeeptheireyesandearsopenatalltimes.Happytrails!

TheListAknapweedsaretheMead-owandSquarrose.ThesetwoarenotwidelydistributedintheWestyet,butweshouldbeonthelookoutforthemsotheycanbeeradicated. TheotherthreeareListBknap-weeds—Russian,DiffuseandSpot-ted—andareseenofteninourmountaincommunity.Theyneedtobestoppedfromspreading. Knapweeds,whileamemberoftheAster/Sunflowerfamily,donotlookoractliketheyellowsunflowersandpurpleastersthatbloominouryardsinlatesummer. Mostoftenyouwillfindtheknap-weedsinshadesofwhite,pinkorpur-
