  • MARCH 1, 2014

Ash Wednesday is March 5, and it begins the season of Lent, the weeks when the church prepares to celebrate the central observance of Christian faith the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. I have come to embrace this season but I did not grow up with it in the Presbyterian church

where I was raised. We did have a fairly intensive observance of Holy Week. I loved the parade on Palm Sunday

participated in parts of a three-

because I spent the day in a choir robe! I am still learning about Lent, but I confess that it is a challenge. This year, what I hope to do during Lent is focus. I want to make time every day to reflect on this season as a journey a journey with the question: what does it mean to follow Jesus through life and death to life beyond death? As with most journeys, I expect I will get sidetracked along the way. But I also trust that I will find my way back to the path when I wander off. If you would like to use the season of Lent to bring more focus to your faith, here are some resources that the church will provide: A daily Lenten devotional written by members and staff to guide your reflection.

A weekly class beginning Thursday, March 6 at 5:30 pm on The Last Week: A Day-by Day Account of , by noted New Testament scholars Marcus Borg and John Dominic Crossan.

On-going opportunities for learning on Sunday mornings at 9:30 and for weekly prayer on Wednesdays at 5 pm. Walk the Labarinth on Wednesdays during Lent, (except March 19) and experience an ancient spiritual practice of prayer in motion.

-a-others across the city in reaching out to help others.

Attending a brief worship at noon each day of Holy Week (April 14-18) and staying for

    lunch.

Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil service (April 17-19).

What is the question that you bring to the observance of Lent this year? I hope you will find one and that you will find occasions to share both your question and your journey with others as we make our way together to the cross and on to Resurrection Day.

    Cynthia M. Campbell, Pastor

    Reflection from the Pastor:

SHARING HOPE FROM THE HEART OF THE HIGHLANDS

  • Following the Lectionary in Lent by Cynthia Campbell The season of Lent (forty days before Easter, plus Sundays) extends this year from Ash Wednesday on

to be baptized on Easter entered their final and most intensive time of preparation. In the early years, most of those being baptized were adults who were learning the Christian faith, learning what it meant to become followers of Jesus. As the larger community prayed with and for those in preparation, they selected readings designed to focus on the person of Christ and the challenge of discipleship. lectionary this year turns to the Gospel of John for the next four Sundays. Where the other gospels feature parables and short incidents of healings, John is punctuated by four long stories which feature extended (and often cryptic) dialogues between Jesus and other characters. In each case, Jesus and the other characters are speaking on

dialogue partners; and through it all we learn more and more about who Jesus really is.

continue one of these conversations? Where do you think Jesus would lead you next? The readings for these from John are: March 16 John 3:1-17: Jesus and Nicodemus; March 23 John 4:5-42: Jesus and the Woman at the Well; March 30 John 9:1-41: Jesus and the Man Born Blind; April 6 John 11:1-45: Jesus Raises Lazarus from Death. There is one major challenge with these stories and with the Gospel of John. Throughout the text, the

remember that Jesus, all of his disciples, the author of this gospel and most if not all of his readers were Jews. The conflict reflected in this gospel (and the others) was between those Jews (the minority) who saw Jesus as the promised Messiah and those (the majority) who did not.

-Semitism was born. For centuries across Christian

conflict between Jesus and those who opposed him was neither ethnic nor religious (in the sense of religious difference). The gospels, however, were to reflect two, three and more generations later during which conflict and struggle led to the emergence of two separate religious families: Jewish and Christian. As we read the gospels, it is important for us to remember that they are not speaking about our neighbors, colleagues and family members who are Jewish.

    Healing and Wholeness Service

On Wednesday, March 26, at 5:00 p.m., Highland will once again come together to provide comfort and support to those in our church family who are experiencing a time of difficulty. If you, a friend or family member are struggling, come and rest with us. If you are

more than you can imagine. constant presence. Our pastors will also be available for a time of personal prayer.

  • Lenten Labyrinth Walks -basement has a labyrinth on it? Our youth transformed a lamentable situation (a flood which required that the gym

Adopting a labyrinth pattern from Chartres Cathedral in France, they painted the floor (over many hours!) and this gift remains there for our use until such time as the floor is replaced.

The Worship & Spiritual Life Team invites you to walk the labyrinth during Lent, engaging this ancient spiritual practice of prayer in motion. The labyrinth will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. every Wednesday from March 5 through April 9 (with the exception of March 19, when the Kids Sale will occupy the labyrinth space). Expect to spend about 30 minutes or more to complete the walk. Someone from the WSL Team will be there to introduce you to the practice if it is new to you, and to hold you in prayer as you embark on this journey.

Many Christians use the season of Lent to deepen their spiritual lives, often including an increased focus

Worship has developed an iPhone/iPad app for Daily Prayer. The app combines the Scriptures from the two-year daily lectionary with worship resources from the Presbyterian Book of Common Worship in a portable format. Prayers for Morning, Midday, Evening, and Close of Day are provided; the app automatically selects lectionary readings and prayers based on the date and time of day. A calendar tool enables you to see readings

(under settings) allows you to customize which readings and prayers appear on your device. The Daily Prayer app can be used flexibly for personal devotions or in prayer with others. If daily prayer is a new practice, you might want to start out by focusing on the lectionary or perhaps the Morning and Close of Day prayers provided. Just go where the spirit leads you!

Much has been written recently about how important both play and experiences with nature are for young children. The Nursery and Weekday School has valued these essential elements throughout its history and continues to provide large doses of both in its curriculum. We have had PLENTY of opportunities to discover and experiment with snow, ice, and cold in the past few months and are anxious to learn what comes next . . . we hope it's SPRING! We encourage all families to share our interest in outdoors, exploring nature, and playing with natural

materials and will be providing a program that will offer some creative and practical ideas about this topic. We invite one and all to join us on Thursday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. when Claude Stephens, Facilitator of Outreach and Regenerative Design, Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest will present NATURE and PLAY: Bringing it Home. He will talk about how essential it is

that young children have authentic encounters with the natural world. We will meet in the dining room of the Pleune-Mobley Center. We continue to be grateful to HPC for the support it offers our program and welcome any Church members and friends to come see us in action. We are currently enrolling for the 2014-2015 year so if you know of anyone with infants through kindergartners looking for a creative, engaging place for their little one, please have them give us a call at 456-6991 or visit our website: hpcweekdayschool.org.

Well, friends: WE DID IT. For the first time in many years, we set an ambitious goal for stewardship, and not only met it, but TOPPED IT. We ended our stewardship campaign with $755,168 in pledges; our goal was $750,000. We received the pledges from 292 people. Our goal for number of pledges was 325. We will continue to expand the reach of our stewardship program in the coming years and hope for more active pledgers to join our ranks. We are beginning to plan for the rest of our year. If you have ideas and thoughts on stewardship, please let us know. We welcome your input. You can address those thoughts to Robyn Sekula, stewardship and member involvement committee chair, at [email protected], or call her at (502) 608-6125. You may also talk to the other members of SAMI, which includes Clyde Foshee, Helen Jones, Rev. Cynthia Campbell, Jane Welch and Rob Fohr. Thank you for your support of Highland. We are so grateful.

  • As the church prepares for the Lenten season, so do the children in our music ministry. David Gambrell will speak in age-appropriate explanations to each group. This time for learning and singing is always a sacred moment. Thank you, David, for all you do. What rich worship services we will experience in March as the Angel Choir sings on March 2, the Lyric Choir sings on March 9, and the Chapel sings on March 23! Suzanne Bowman reports: "Joyful Noise has been learning a song with a title perfect for our group: Make a Joyful Noise to the Lord! We come up with fun, joyful noises to add each week. We've been exploring drums and are learning to keep a steady beat, and create rhythm patterns to echo." Martha Makela reports: "Amidst the cold and ice of winter, the Angels have continued to warm things up by learning new songs and keeping the favorites in their heart and minds. The latest work involves learning 2 lullabies,

for YOU. We are planning some movement and singing to share with all of you. If you happen to know these lullabies, perhaps you will sing with us on Mar 2. Thank you, congregation, for your support of the Children's Music Ministries, and keep this ministry in your prayers. Dorissa Falk

After a two-day briefing at the main compound of CEPAD in Managua, we embarked on a bumpy ride to Mirazul where we were reluctantly greeted by our hosts. However, over the course of the rest of the week, we were all transformed. We held brainstorming sessions, shared our hopes and dreams, and worked side by side to develop a plan for our partnership going forward. Our strong, beautiful host families cooked for us, gave us their beds, and made us feel like family. There were many tears when it was time to leave. tangible ways, like improvements to roads and homes, and the creation of a cemetery in the village. Again, our hosts welcomed us with unconditional warmth and love. -

2014 Refugee Sponsorship Team Each year for over two decades HPC has assembled a Team to welcome and assist a newly arriving

Somalia, having lived as refugees in Nepal, Syria, Thailand, Indonesia, South Africa. Our Refugee Sponsorship Team assists families for the first four months of their resettlement here. HPC brings some financial assistance, the Team gathers furniture and other furnishings, sets-up the apartment with those items, stocks the pantry and prepares a first meal, meets them at the airport, and provides transportation for key appointments. For the next four months the Team members provide a variety of supportive services, depending on the needs of the Family. When we are assigned a Family depends largely on when we have assembled a Team. Would you like to be a part of that Team this year? Do you need more information or more details of what is required?
