Reflections ~ Reflexiones GGoossppeell:: MMaatttthheeww MMaatttthheeww 22::11--1122

As you listened to the Gospel, did you hear any echoes of the Old Testament reading from Isaiah? Perhaps you noticed that in both readings people are being led by a bright light on a long journey. They want to see the Lord's glory and honor him with gifts (gold, frankincense, and myrrh). Matthew tells us the story of the astrologers, or magi. They followed a star to find "the newborn king of the Jews." Today's feast is called Epiphany, a word meaning "manifestation" or "shining forth" like a light. We celebrate that day when Jesus, our Light, was first revealed to the nations beyond Israel. Just as light shines forth so that we may see in the darkness, our faith in Jesus shines forth in us. 1.) How are you like the magi? 2.) Sometimes on long journeys, we are tempted to turn back. What keeps you on the road to Jesus?

In a French cathedral there is a charming stone carving of the three kings wearing crowns and sharing one cozy bed. An angel points to a star and gently touches the hand of one king, who has awakened. The star is the one that led the kings to Bethlehem, and the angel is warning them not to return to Herod. Tradition says that they

were Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, the first non-Jews to worship the Son of God. In the Middle Ages houses were blessed on Epiphany, reflecting how these magi found Christ "on entering the house." Try reviving this ancient tradition. Incense the house, sprinkle holy water, and write in chalk over every outside doorway "20 + C + M + B + 11" (or whatever the year is). The letters honor the three kings and also stand for Christus mansionem benedicat, "May Christ bless this home," and symbolize welcoming everyone into the home as Christ. LLiivviinngg SStteewwaarrddsshhiipp NNooww A prayer for Epiphany: Father, you revealed your Son to the nations by the guidance of a star. Lead us to your glory in heaven by the light of faith. (The Roman Missal, Opening Prayer for the Epiphany of the Lord)

Copyright (c) 2010, World Library Publications.

Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Epiphany. "The Lord and ruler is coming; kingship is his, and government and power." With these words the Church proclaims that today's feast brings to a perfect fulfillment all the purposes of Advent. Epiphany, therefore, marks the liturgical zenith of the Advent-Christmas season. —Pius Parsch Epiphany means manifestation. What the Church celebrates today is the manifestation of our Lord to the whole world; after being made known to the shepherds of Bethlehem He is revealed to the Magi who have come from the East to adore Him. Christian tradition has ever seen in the Magi the first fruits of the Gentiles; they lead in their wake all the peoples of the earth, and thus the Epiphany is an affirmation of universal salvation. St. Leo brings out this point admirably in a sermon, read at Matins, in which he shows in the adoration of the Magi the beginnings of Christian faith, the time when the great mass of the heathen sets off to follow the star which summons it to seek its Savior. LLIIGGHHTT OOFF TTHHEE WWOORRLLDD Epiphany can be understood as an extension of the Nativity of the Lord that we celebrate on December 25. While at Christmas we celebrate Jesus’ coming as the long-awaited king and Messiah of the Jewish people, on Epiphany we celebrate the revelation that Jesus is the Savior and Light of all nations—Jews, Gentiles, and all people. The star shines so brightly that it attracts magi who come from far distant countries to worship Jesus. They are not Jews, yet they are drawn to the Light of the world. The letter to the Ephesians reveals that the Light of the world was for the Gentiles as well as the Jews—Christ gathers all people into the light of his love. The reading from Isaiah also describes a gathering of diverse peoples, but this time it is to the light that emanates from the people of God. CCooppyyrriigghhtt ©© JJ.. SS.. PPaalluucchh CCoo..

Since 2005, the mission of the Walk for Life West Coast has been to change the perceptions of a society that thinks abortion is an answer. Abortion harms women and men. It divides families and society. Women–and all people–deserve better than abortion. We strive to shed light on all issues of life, but particularly to change hearts hurt by the violence of abortion. Life is the best and only good choice. Saturday, January 25, 2020. CCooppyyrriigghhtt ©© JJ.. SS.. PPaalluucchh CCoo..
