Doing Good This Holiday Season: MONTHLY NOTESMONTHLY NOTES:Not trying to sound too remedial here, butwasnt Thanksgiving supposed to be aboutTHANKS and GIVING? Unfortunately, iteemed this years was being maneuveredowards goods, gadgets and deals. Retailtores bucked the norm by openingheir doors for the holiday, a day before

Black Friday. If the advertising was to bebelieved, the most important question forThanksgiving was not which relative washosting dinner, or what side dish we werebringing, but mapping out the route wedake between the strip malls depending

upon which stores opened earliest or

    promised the biggest bargains.

or me, it soured one of the holidays wean all share one beyond any religious

borders and one traditionally unfocusedon the almighty buck. Before the nextound of festivities, no matter which

upcoming holiday you celebrate at yourhouse, it seems important to remember theimple THANKS and GIVING elements adampaigns and commercialism tried to steer

    us away from last month.

ven if times are tough in your own houseight now, chances are that others are going

hrough an even rougher spell. If yourituation permits, here are some quick ideas, auses and gifts to think about this holidayeason.

The rst one is close to home the victimsn Washington Illinois and other areas

directly impacted by recent severe weather. The up front response to our neighborsdownstate has been phenomenal, andt would be great to see a continuation.

The Red Cross and Salvation Army are stilln need of goods and donations. Here is

where stuff like widgets, gadgets and appswe have really come in handy. Monetarydonations can be made easily via mostmajor cell phone providers. Donations are,of course, still accepted over the phone,he internet, or through the mail. As cold

weather is now upon the area, goods suchs warm clothing and blankets should beppreciated, as well as non-perishable food

tems. To learn more, contact https://donate.alvationarmyusa,org/ or 773-725-1100nd http://www.redcross.org/ or 1-800-

    REDCROSS.

Other always great and worthy causes: St. Judes Childrens Hospital

Local shelters, Local food depositories andLocal hospitalsSoup kitchens Churches and templesAnimal sheltersGoodwill IndustriesVeterans Associations Many, many, many more!

I like stuff too; still plan on exchanginggifts with family but plan to make a realeffort to step outside of the box. Maybe Iwill look for some things that dont comewith power cords or on/off switches, andengage my family to join me in exploringsome unique options for charitablecontributions we can add to our traditionalcauses.

Theres a rather neat site that helps showthe power of putting the right tools in theright hands in an effort to end hunger andpoverty. Ive been looking at www.heifer.org. Through them, important gifts can bemade: like irrigation pumps to villages orstoves for families to cook with; providingclean water and basic nutritional needs. Thissite also allows providing a gift of animalsand livestock to needy communities.

Recognizing these needs provides US witha unique gift, too. Perhaps the site can act

as an interesting tool to use as a teachingmoment to our children who may notunderstand charity, or could benet in alook at how thrilled an entire communitycan be with the simple addition of a cow.Use these sites, nd your own, be thankfulfor what you have and open your hearts toothers by your words, deeds, prayers, andcharity this season. Merry Christmas! HappyHolidays!

Hosting a Hanukkah, Christmas, orNew Years Eve party can be a daunting

ndertaking for you - it can also be hard on

he environment. If youre playing host thisear consider these tips to help make yourestivities earth-friendly.

    Party prep.

We all go a little crazy with theousecleaning when were anticipating arowd of guests in our home. Keep in mindhat using certain household cleaners canreatly increase the air pollution in yourouse or apartment, making the air youreathe irritating and even unsafe for your

amily and guests. Consider using safe, non-oxic cleaning methods and products. Make

ure to also properly ventilate with fans andpen windows if its not too cold outside.

erving food? Of course you are. Useour regular dishes and atware insteadf buying paper or plastic. This canramatically reduce your waste. If you have

o use disposables, try biodegradable paperlates and compost them along with your

eaves, produce scraps, and coffee grounds. As youre planning the menu, consider

asing it around local and seasonally-vailable food. Foods that travel acrosstates or around the globe to get to youave high carbon footprints. When youre

prucing up your home with decorations, euse last years if you still have them.

Want to keep it simple and natural? Just asgourds and pumpkins made excellent andcolorful Fall accents, gather or purchasesimilar winter greenery, berries or fruits foryour upcoming holiday festivities. They canusually be purchased at almost any store, including your local farmers market. Plus, theyre decorations that can be composted and sometimes eaten once youre donewith them.

    During the party.

Saving energy on home lighting isnt just forregular use overhead lights and oor lampsanymore. Theres even environmentally-friendly holiday lighting! LEDs, or LightEmitting Diodes, are available for bothindoor and outdoor decorative lighting.LED lights are cooler to the touch, last 10times longer (some come with a guaranteed50,000 hour bulb life or a lifetime warranty),and they use 80% less energy than yourstandard string lights. Consider LED

ickering lights to inspire a cozier feel.

Help your guests contribute to the greeneffort by providing clearly marked trashreceptacles for different types of partywaste paper, plastic, glass, aluminum, foodscraps, liquids, etc.

    Clean up.

Relax you dont have to worry about handwashing your dishes! Using a dishwasher isactually more environmentally-friendly thanwashing each dish by hand. Youll use muchless soap and about 80% less water. Visit

A Dogs World: I wanted out of the box, and up on the tree. The shinier and better theyfit in my mouth, thebetter. Once the tree comes out and gets putup, I know that means boxes and paper on thefloor to rip apart are in my near future. I amhappy to help open anyones boxes if they needhelp, or would like their warping paper shreddedand dragged throughout the house. It makesa fun game of chase for adults or kids, so just

keep that in mind if your pet likes to play thissame game. We really just want you to work off allthose holiday cocktails and cookies. Speaking of delicious human foodwe like to enjoy, I must say I love me someThanksgiving leftovers. What is not to like aboutleft over deep fried turkey? I am easy to pleasetoo, since I am just as happy without gravy on myturkey.

As for this weather turning to colder,I am over all the complaints about it. If you

had the allergies like I did making me itch afall you would be happy too. The cold weathermeans the allergens driving my skin crazy arefor the next few months. A little relief for mand a big relief for my parents not hearing mlick all the time. In other news as you can tell by ourpicture, I am getting the hang of this bigbrother thing no problem. I am happy to douas a dog, as a pillow, or as a blanket. I evenoffer my grooming skills, but those do not seto be appreciated as much as I had hoped. Owell, as long as I am getting attention, and dhave to get up, I am good to go.

I hope that everyone has a greatholiday season, stays safe, warm, and gets to ssome much deserved time with those they lovwill be happy to spend as much time as possiblethe couch this holiday season!

Christmas time is here around the Corcoranhousehold which means plenty for me to getnto around the house. The tree gets brought

    Where to set the humidier?

This tops the list of frequent questions weresked this time of year: where to set theumidier, how to know its on, and how arehe devices maintained?

Here are the simplest answers to thoseuestions:

The most common setting forhe humidier is around 35%. As winteregins you can start with a lower numberepending on your situation.

Instances where you would sethe humidier lower include water formingt the base of windows, mold or humidityssues in basements or crawlspaces, ortrong musty and damp smells.

Instances where you would set the

umidier higher include homes with largemounts of hardwood oors or cabinets,

experiencing excessive static shock, chronicdry noses or sinuses, or extreme indoordryness. To ensure the humidier is runningor determine the set point go to thehumidistat dial. Turn the dial up or down. When you hear a click that is the humiditylevel in the house. Any setting higher turns

the humidier on. Typically you will hear afan running on it or water running through itduring a call for heat. Maintenance can be as basic asensuring the humidier panel (replaceablelter) is fresh every year and the controlleris set to your desired humidity level. For agood, thorough cleaning water lines andvalves are tested as well as drains checkedand /or cleared to allow proper drainage.Humidier maintenance is typicallyperformed during maintenance if youchoose.

There are mixed feelings abouthumidiers, but we like them, can keepthem safe, and ensure they maintain yourdesired set point. For more help, or todiscuss your situation, just give us a call.
