Charity 1106904 Pauline Zulu lives in a poor township on the outskirts of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. She lives with her mother, two brothers and sister. Her father died in January 2013. Pauline’s mother is unemployed and the family have no regular income. Their home has no electricity, piped water or sewage system. Pauline had not started school at age five as her parents had been un- able to pay the school fees but when St Anne’s Community School opened in 2010, she took the opportunity to begin her education. Com- munity schools do not charge school fees or require pupils to buy uni- form or books. Parents give small donations to school funds when possible. The only other income during the school’s four years has been the monthly grants from CLinC. Fundraising by the school is difficult in an area where families are so poor. We met Pauline Zulu in September 2013 when, at the age of 15, she was studying year 7. After school she helps with home chores, fetches water from one of the stand pipes, plays netball and attends church services. She was keen to do well at school and hopes to be- come a nurse if she can complete her education. We heard that moving to year 8 would not be possible for her as her mother would be unable to pay the school fees, buy the uniform, shoes and books required by government schools (approximately £120 per year). However, thanks to the supporters of CLinC, Pauline and her twenty two classmates moved to study year 8 in local government schools in January 2014. CLinC sent a grant to cover their school fees and uniform. In addition thirteen year 8 pupils moved on to study year 9 sponsored by Friends of CLinC and The Zebra Trust. On behalf of all these children, thank you. A year 9 certificate will enable the children to apply for jobs and bring in a small income for their families. A small number may earn enough to pay fees to continue their studies. This year there are another twenty three year 7 pupils at St Anne’s with stories very similar to Pauline’s. So, in January 2015, CLinC will be sending grants to cover their year 8 school fees and uniform and also for the 23 pupils moving on to year 9. Pauline Zulu lives in a poor township on the outskirts of Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. She lives with her mother, two brothers and sister. Her father died in January 2013. Pauline’s mother is unemployed and the family have no regular income. Their home has no electricity, piped water or sewage system.

Pauline had not started school at age five as her parents had been un-able to pay the school fees but when St Anne’s Community School opened in 2010, she took the opportunity to begin her education. Com-munity schools do not charge school fees or require pupils to buy uni-

form or books.

She was keen to do well at school and hopes to be-come a nurse if she can complete her education.

Visiting Visiting is part of the Church’s Ministry. If you would like a visit from someone from the church, please call the Bene-fice Office and we will do our best to arrange it.

If you are going into or in hospitalC You can help to make sure that the church team can respond as you would like us to when you are ill. It’s important that if you are admitted to hospital, you do three things:-

1. Make sure someone tells one of the min-istry team that you are going into hospital – ask them to pass on the message as appropriate.

2. Make it plain to the hospital staff whether (or not!) you would like a visit. This means that when someone rings up, they won’t have to spend time saying ‘hang on, ‘I’ll just ask him/herC’

3. Make it plain what sort of visit you would like: would you prefer a friend from the church or one of the visiting team or would you particularly like a clergy visit? If you want to be certain of a private, one to one chat, don’t be afraid to ask the hospi-tal staff if they will allow your minister to come outside normal visiting hours, so that they don’t take up precious time and space from your family.

For all Benefice Business Please ring

01454 260096 and leave a message

or email

[email protected]

The office will usually be open from 10.00am until 1:00pm on Fridays when messages and emails will be dealt with.

If you would like to make an appoint-ment to speak to Rev’d. Jenny; phone 01453 890384. You might need to leave a message and she will return your call as soon as possible as she is entitled to time off!

If you would like someone to bring Holy Communion to your home please ring 01454 260096 and leave a message. We are more than happy to do this.

TORTWORTH PARISH MEETING

A parish meeting was held on June 3rdth with 6 parishioners present. Councillor John O’ Neill also attended together with Jacqui Ward from South Gloucestershire Council.

The Meeting discussed the ongoing Policies Sites and Places Consultation and noted the proposed wording and context contained in the latest document from South Gloucestershire Council. This was approved by the meeting.

On highway matters the lack of grass verge cutting by SGC was noted. Tortworth Court and Tort-worth Estate were thanked for cutting back various road junctions. Damery Hill is closed for urgent drainage repairs. There will be an overnight closure of the motorway slip roads in mid - June to carry out routine repairs. It was noted that the road to Avening Green is to be re-surfaced in the summer – parishioners asked for prior notice.

Parishioners welcomed the new directional sign at the village crossroads and were pleased with the annual clearance of overgrowth and rubbish at the motorway lay-by by SGC Streetcare.

It was noted that there has been at least one near miss at the Tortworth School junction recently.

The parish had supported the application by Cemex for an additional quarrying area. There was nothing to report regarding the Tortworth Business Park and planning issues. The parish had ob-jected to an application at Huntingford (Alkington Parish and Stroud District Council) for a ‘solar park’ on the basis that the applicant had not addressed the impact on views from Tortworth and Avening Green.

The use of the Estate Office as the polling station for the recent European elections had been suc-cessful.

The Clerk is in contact with Michaelwood Service Station about litter that is dropped obviously from the various food outlets particularly at Damery and past Old Court.

Following the last meeting the Clerk had written to the governor of Leyhill Prison inviting her to the meeting. A colleague had replied declining the invitation. The Chairman has taken the matter up with Steve Webb who is to raise the mater with governor at a forthcoming meeting. The meeting felt strongly that there should be more involvement from Leyhill in the community.

The accounts to 31st March 2013.were approved.

Sally Moreton told the meeting that Tortworth School requires a Community governor. If anyone would like to know more please contact Sally or Carol Bowes at the school. The next meeting is on Tuesday 2nd September at The Estate Office at 7.30pm Robert Killen, Clerk ([email protected] or 01454260268)

Summer Reading Challenge 2014

You’ll be a-mazed at what’s going on for children in South Gloucestershire Libraries this summer.

The challenge begins in all South Gloucestershire Libraries on 12th July and runs until 13th September. It’s free to join in the fun.

Children are challenged to read just 6 books to collect their very own medal and certificate. More than 7000 children took part in Creepy House last summer. The parent of one child said ‘As the mother of a very reluctant reader I was

worried about him not reading over the holiday but this reading challenge changed everything. He asked to keep coming back to the library and even finished some

books by the end of the same day. Please do it again!’

Visit any South Gloucestershire Library this summer for children to take part in

Mythical Maze.Mythical Maze.Mythical Maze.Mythical Maze. Libraries are also holding free activities throughout the holiday to help children complete the

challenge. Visit your local library or log on to www.southglos.gov.uk/libraries to find out more.

Michaelmas Fayre

Saturday 27th September

The chief aim of this event is to raise money to help Syrian

refugees who have fled to countries including Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Egypt and Bulgaria as well as raising funds for our own parish churches.

Plans are now well underway for our Fayre and there is to be a Grand Raffle for which the first prize will be a magnifi-cent hand-made ‘log cabin’ patchwork quilt.

This quilt has been made by Margaret Oliver and we are most grateful to her for this generous donation which represents many hours of hard work on Margaret’s part.

Other prizes will include: a voucher for Tumpy Green Equestrian Centre and a chicken/goose dinner. Look out for tickets on sale at events in the benefice during the summer.

We shall also be looking for volunteers to help run the event, so if you would like to offer your services in any capacity, please contact the rep-resentative in your parish for details: Cromhall: Ann Greenhalgh Rockhampton: Anne Marshall & Margaret Oliver Falfield: Linda Smith & Paul Davenport Tortworth: Kay Rea & Jan Leach Tytherington: Fiona Shipston & Val Johnson

FALFIELD VH 100 CLUB

A BIG thank you to those who have joined or re-joined the Falfield VH 100 Club 2014-15. We have struggled with numbers this year

and at one stage I was going to abandon it completely. But the committee rallied and we twisted enough arms to get it going again. We are now up to 56 and the prizes are £16, £12 and £8. We had our first draw at the Barn Dance where our host Chris Daniell made the draw. The winners were: 1st (163) Mr Gra-ham Smith, 2nd (175) Mrs Margaret Steer, 3rd (190) Mrs Heather Griffiths.

We are still hoping more people will come forward and join and that will in-crease the prize fund. Please contact [email protected] or 01454260615 - it's not too late to join.

Falfield Village Hall Management Committee

A very successful Barn Dance took place on Sat-urday 14

th June at Buckover Farm, thanks to Chris

Daniell and family.

The event was attended by just over 100 people who were entertained by the music of Sargent’s Mess and danced the night away under the enthusiastic instruc-tion of their caller. A short video and photos of the event are on Falfield Village website, thanks to James Carpenter.

A tasty Ploughman’s supper was enjoyed by all, hav-ing been prepared by members of the committee. The popular bar and raffle, alongside ticket sales, achieved a very good profit of £750. This is the main fund raising event in this year’s calendar and will go towards essential maintenance and up keep of the hall premises.

Thanks must go to local business who donated raffle prizes: The Gables Hotel, Tortworth Court, Eastwood Garden Centre, Traditional Butchers of Thornbury, UK Global Road Safety, and the Therapy Centre Fal-field along with donations from individuals. We must also thank the Daniell family again for their kindness in accommodating us and even allowing use of an outside TV screen to allow football fans to watch the end of the England v Italy match!

The hard working committee are already talking about

the next Barn dance in 2016 so be prepared for an-

other do–si-do!

We visited a local farm for this meeting where robotic milking had recently been installed. This was followed by an American supper in the garden on a lovely dry evening. Members were asked to write a poem during the evening about the visit and this is the contribution from Sheila Hook.

Our ladies here were well impressed With everything they saw If we had time - we'd love to see A lot, lot, lot, lot more

Just like us ladies, the cows they like A little gentle rub But just a few, their thoughts they strayed Thinking of all the grub

Our tables here a treat to see Ladened up with food If all's not eaten - every scrap They'll think us awfully rude

We have great respect for the Robinson family How hard they work each day Whatever do we owe them all And however can we repay?

Our next meeting will include a talk on Irish Dancing and visitors are always welcome.

The Midnight Walk is St Peter's Hospice's

fabulous starlit walk around the city of Bristol. It's a 5 or 10 mile sponsored walk, allowing everyone to rise to the challenge.

Starting at 10.30pm from Bristol City Football Sta-dium, the walk takes a circular route that includes the Suspension Bridge, the Downs, Clifton, the SS Great Britain and the Floating Harbour.

A group of women from Cromhall (Mandy Bird, Enid Cole, Pat Lyes-Wilsdon and Val Verey) who usually meet as a book group, have entered as a team called ‘The Cromhall Cronies’ to complete the

shorter 5 mile route and are now looking for spon-sors.

Knowing that many of you have first-hand experi-ence of the care that St Peter’s offers, we hope that as many people as possible will support us.

Sponsorship forms will shortly be available in the new Cromhall Community Shop or ring Mandy on 01454 294186. .

Please sponsor us and support St Peter’s, your local Hospice

Francis Pain (1921 – 2014)

May saw the passing of a much respected for-mer tenant farmer on the Tortworth Estate.

Francis Pain grew up on Clingre Farm at Stinchcombe, where he worked whilst his two elder brothers fought in the Second World War, one of whom was sadly killed.

After the war, Francis won the Berkeley Hunt Agricultural Society exam, which entitled him to a year studying at Cirencester Agricultural College, an experience that he found enjoy-able and rewarding.

In November 1951 he married Peggy and they became tenants of Lodge Farm, Tort-worth and later they moved to Old Court Farm where they brought up their family. Francis was a hard working and dedicated farmer who took great pride in building up a herd of pedigree Friesian cows. In more re-cent years he and son Tim were devastated when most of this herd was slaughtered be-cause of TB outbreaks on the farm.

Francis loved sport and played badminton and later skittles and bowls. He was always a popular member of the team. He was a true countryman who had a vast knowledge of wildlife and birds

When Tim took over the tenancy of Old Court, Francis and Peggy retired to Cam. Francis took his beehives with him and con-tinued his love of beekeeping. He also made a lovely garden and continued enjoying it un-til recently. Last year when asked why he was planting apple trees he replied with his favourite saying, ‘Live for today – but farm for tomorrow’.

Our sympathies go to his children and grandchildren at this sad time.

Falfield War Memorial With the centenary of the 1st World War now taking place I have been undertaking some research into indi-viduals who are remembered on the village war memorial. The majority

Why?

Why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with hopes that something new to eat will have materialized?

Why do people keep running over a thread a dozen times with their vac-uum cleaner, then reach down, pick it up, ex-amine it, then put it down to give the vacuum one more chance?

Why is it that no plastic bag will open from the end on your first try?

Tytherington Parish Council

Solar Farm Proposal

Tytherington Parish Council wish to hear your views about the proposed Solar Farm on land be-tween the Motorway and New Road. The final plans have not yet been lodged with South Glouces-tershire Council and the Parish Council cannot discuss the matter formally until this is done. How-ever the more views we receive the better we can represent the village as a whole. At the time of writing only one person has registered their objections with us whilst a number of residents have said that they are not unduly concerned one way or the other.

The solar panels will undoubtedly have an impact upon our local environ-ment in general and more specifically on a number of households who live closest to the proposed site. Issues of motorway noise, possible glare and loss of agricultural land have already been raised with the developers to-gether with how well the site can be screened and the installation process itself. It is expected that these and other issues will be addressed in the fi-nal application so that we can make an informed decision.

During the developers’ meeting at which they presented their current thoughts, the Parish Council invited them to address us with their final proposals; a meeting at which you will all be welcome. When this will be will depend upon the timescale of the application but it may fit with the Parish Council meeting scheduled for 11th August.

Meanwhile at their meeting on 1st July the Parish Council will consider their response to the offer of three options for Community Benefit Payments to the Parish. As was explained at the earlier meet-ing if the scheme goes ahead the Parish is entitled to substantial payments even if we lodge formal objections. We are being asked to make a decision on the option we favour ahead of the planning application being made so it should not in any way be interpreted as support for the proposals.

If you were unable to attend the drop-in-session or the meeting and wish to see what is proposed go to www.towerhillfarm.com and also the developers’ website at www.aee-renewables.com Roger Unwin

Tytherington History Trail – 1

Look out for the first Tytherington History Trail leaflet. Produced by the Tytherington Local History Group it gives details of a walk through the village whilst providing information about its architectural, agricul-tural and industrial past.

You can follow up the information on the leaflet by going to our own local history

website www.tytheringtonroots.co.uk which provides a glimpse into many as-pects of Tytherington’s past. We are al-ways looking to update the site with fresh information or old photographs to create an historical archive for the village. Please e-

mail us on [email protected] if you would like to make contact.

90% of everything we buy comes by sea. Think about the journey your goods have taken to get to you. How have they got here? It’s almost certainly thanks to the world’s 1.5 million seafarers, who face incredibly tough conditions in their daily life as they work to put food on your table, petrol in your car and clothes on your back.

Sometimes seafarers are abandoned thousands of miles from home with no means of communicating with their families. Others may have been on ships which are attacked by pirates or be working in dan-gerous and unsafe conditions amongst staff who bully them.

Organisations such as the Mission to Seafarers offer a base in ports around the world - places where sea-farers can be safe, share their problems with sympa-thetic staff and relax in a friendly environment.

On Sea Sunday, churches around the world come together to remember seafarers, their families and those who support them.

In Tortworth we shall be thinking especially of our link with the Mission to Seafarers in Mombasa where the chaplain, the Rev’d Ben Humphries, has been unable to return to Kenya from his home leave because of the dangerous situation resulting from terrorist at-tacks in that country. We pray that the staff there will be able to continue the valuable work they carry out every day for seafarers coming into the port. Mean-while Ben is shortly to be redeployed to Dunkerque.

FALFIELD PARISH COUNCIL

At the Annual Parish Meeting Cllr Hathway gave her Annual Report and summarised all the activities that have been going on during the past year including the meetings with HMP Eastwood Park; the Safer Stronger Community Group meetings; the preservation works completed on the parish assets; the highways’ adopted road safety issues e.g. commuter parking and community events e.g. Big Spring Clean. Cllr Hathway also thanked those who had supported and helped the Parish Council with these activities throughout the year.

The Clerk went on to give the financial report highlighting that there is approximately £5,700 of unear-marked funds which is less than required.

The Annual Meeting of the Council followed and began with Cllr Hathway being re-elected as Chair-person and Cllr Jarvis being elected as Vice Chair. The Accounts and Annual Return for 2013/2014 were reviewed and signed.

We also had the pleasure of co-opting a new Parish Councillor, Mrs Megan O’Connor on to the Par-ish Council at the meeting.

If you are interested in filling one of the two remaining vacancies or would like further information about the Parish Council please contact the Clerk or look at the Falfield website www.falfield.org.uk.

The main highlights of the meeting were to approval of the new Standing Orders, Financial Regula-tion and Risk Management Review documents and the start of the Beat Surgery at the Village Hall.

The Orchard View track repairs are still ongoing as South Gloucestershire is still procuring the “plannings/scalpings” to carry out the work. The Orchard View green area has also been put forward for consideration as a Designated Local Green Space.

The Parish Council was saddened to hear about the death of Mr Clive Williams who was a member of the Parish Council for many years and our thoughts are with his family. Dawn Bramley, Clerk to Falfield Parish Council [email protected]

TYTHERINGTON WI REPORT MAY 2014

After our opening welcome, the busi-ness of the meeting took place covering items as diverse as automatic organ donation, commit-ment to help and encourage honey bees to pros-per and support for Fair Trade. Treasurer, Mary Travell, confirmed that we had raised £120 on our cake stall at the Tytherington May Day Fair. A number of members volunteered their services for Blood Transfusion support on June 2nd

Valerie Niblett confirmed a planned trip on Sep-tember 11th to Savill Garden and Frogmore House, Windsor and is now taking names of all interested parties. This is also open to non-members, Valerie can be contacted on 01454 417982 for more details.

We then welcomed Jenny Frost from 'Samaritans Purse' who gave us a fascinating insight into the organisation and the work carried out by a large number of dedicated volunteers. The organisa-tion has been running for more than 20 years with the sole purpose of bringing a little joy and cheer to thousands of very poor and homeless children in the world. Their aim is to acquire as many filled shoeboxes as possible, wrapped in Christmas paper and filled with items that would be of inter-est and help to their chosen recipients. These are boys and girls aged 2-4, 5-9 and 10-14.

We were amazed at the variety and ingenuity of items that were included, many of which were handmade such as knitted hand and finger pup-pets and games like ludo and draughts. Beads and small toys, even those given away by McDonalds, go down very well. Also included are picture books that have no language barriers and any item that can trigger a child's imagination.

Jenny's area covers three counties and from their warehouse in Evesham, filled shoeboxes are col-lected throughout the year with the aim of distrib-uting them before Christmas if possible. Jenny showed us photographs taken when she accom-panied a convoy to Ukraine. The joy that radi-ated from the children was palpable; they were so obviously thrilled with their boxes. Some wouldn't open them instantly but chose to take them home to share with their siblings.

Inspired by Jenny's talk, that there will certainly be a number of filled boxes finding their way to the warehouse in time for next Christmas. For more information email: [email protected].

Thornbury Volunteer Centre

Thornbury Volunteer Centre’s Pop-Up Shop in Thorn-bury’s St Mary Centre proved very successful with at least 16 potential new volunteers registering and many more taking information.

The shop also raised funds for TVC, which as a small local charity is always in need of support. The shop sold good quality pre-owned goods and local craftspeople displayed and sold their work. The raffle raised a total of £546 which far exceeded our expectations and our thanks go to the Swan, Thornbury, for the donation of some of the prizes.

To highlight Volunteers’ Week two special treasure-hunt competitions were held where children in two age catego-ries had to find the logos of local charitable and voluntary organisations hidden in the shops in the St Mary Centre. Cash prizes donated by the St Mary Centre went to the winners.

We are extremely grateful to the St Mary Centre Manage-ment team without whom the event could not have been held.
