The Region 2 Arts Council (R2AC) is pleased to unveil new grant opportunities for artists, arts organizations, nonprofits, schools and local governments. These grants are a result of the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage funds as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the people of Minnesota’s vote on Nov. 4, 2008. The passage of the Clean Water, Lands & Legacy Amendment will greatly enhance arts funding for the next 25 years in the state of Minnesota. The R2AC will receive a portion of these funds for arts programming to be re- granted in the five-county area we serve. R2AC convened listening sessions and needs assessment surveys throughout the region to help determine constituent needs. Based on this input, R2AC Board planning sessions created new programs for the dissemination of these funds. The Region 2 Arts Council (R2AC) is pleased to unveil new grant opportunities for artists, arts organizations, nonprofits, schools and local governments. These grants are a result of the Minnesota Arts and Cultural Heritage funds as appropriated by the Minnesota State Legislature with money from the people of Minnesota’s vote on Nov. 4, 2008. Region 2 Arts Council Fills New Staff PositionKatie Carter has accepted the position of Program Assistant beginning January 2010. She will be responsible for administering artist and education grant programs for the new Legacy funds and the McKnight Foundation. In addition, she will manage the Professional Development program, artist training workshops and media promotion of Legacy grants.

Katie served as an intern at R2AC for two semesters while working on her Masters degree in English. Please welcome Katie as she meets with you about the new grant opportunities for artists.

Workshop Funding Available

Region 2 Arts Council invites individuals and organizations from our five-county area (Beltrami, Clearwater, Hubbard, Lake of the Woods and Mahnomen counties) to propose workshop ideas for direct funding. The workshop is funded with no financial risk to you.

The workshop must focus on learning experiences for adult artists and be open to the public. Any group that wants to bring in an artist to do a workshop is eligible, as are regional artists who wish to present a workshop themselves. Proposals are considered on an ongoing basis, but funds are limited. The sooner you contact us, the better.

R2AC Awards Arts Project Grants

Region 2 Arts Council (R2AC) recently awarded $10,300 through the Arts Project Grants Program, designed for organizations and schools to create or produce an arts project or event. The recipients included:

Friends of the Bemidji Library received $540 to assist with purchasing the sculpture titled “A Little Bird” by Julie Jones and the installation of the sculp-ture in front of the Bemidji Public Library.

Lake Agassiz Regional Library (LARL) was awarded $290 to assist in hiring Robert and Lynn Halbrook to perform at the Bagley and Mahnomen Libraries for the youth Summer Reading Program and for the residents of Clearwater and Manomen counties.

District 309 Community Education received $1,500 to hire Tod Green, a multi-instrumentalist who performs on over 30 acoustic string, flute and percussion instruments to present two education programs for middle and high school students.

Minnesota Folklore Theater ARCC was awarded $920 to produce two plays in a joint effort with the Greater Akeley Youth Council.

Bemidji Community Theater received $1,500 to collaborate with the Paul Bunyan Playhouse to produce Gilbert and Sulivan’s operetta, “The Pirates of Penzance.”

Schoolcraft Learning Community was awarded $950 to present their Winter/Spring Concert showcasing both the choirs and the orchestras.

The Depot Preservation Alliance received $1,000 to secure arts planning as-sistance for the planned creation of an Artisans’ Marketplace to serve as a work and show venue for area artisans, provide arts access to ages from youth to elder and expand area arts educational opportunities.

Red Bridge Film Festival was awarded $1,500 to invite a visiting filmmaker and exhibit six unusual films during the Red Bridge Film Festival’s 3rd annual celebration.

Headwaters School of Music & Arts received $1,500 to increase youth orchestra op-portunities for string and wind students who live in Beltrami, Hubbard and Clearwater Counties.

Pequana Playhouse was awarded $600 to offer a Mixed Blood Theatre touring production of “Dr. King’s Dream” to the public and a student assembly at Lake of the Woods School.

Bemidji Community Art Center reopens January 19, 2010 for regular business hours.

R2AC Awards Individual Artist Grants

Region 2 Arts Council (R2AC) recently awarded $5,600 through the IndividualArtist Grants Program which is funded through an appropriation from theMcKnight Foundation.

Gretchen Rusch was awarded $1,000 to assist in learning from with Dr. William McMullen, Professor of Music at the University of Nebraska.

Judy Merrit received $1,000 to do research on Bear Butte for her novel “Dakota Crossing.”

Russell Doke was awarded $655 to assist in recording CDs of heritage tunes on a piano accordion for the general public and nursing homes.

Jacque Tinsley received $1,000 to assist in paying for music lessons to improve her techniques in Celtic Folk Harp, Mandolin and Native Flute.

Sean Hill was awarded $1,000 to assist with expenses incurred during a four week residency at the Hambridge Center in Rabun Gap, Georgia, to write and do research for his new poetry manuscript “Dangerous Goods.”

Christina Thorne received $945 to assist in purchasing equipment to enhance her studio and jewelry design.

Headwaters Schoolof Music and the Arts

Winter session will begin January 4, 2010. Headwaters School of Music and the Arts will offer private lessons in the following instruments:

Jan. 4 Headwaters School of Music and the Arts presents the start of “Clay Play” series on Mondays at 4 - 5:30 p.m. Join Tom Daly in the art room for an afternoon of creativity. Learn the techniques in the use of clay making projects using coil, slab and pinch methods. This class is for students ages 8-13. Materials are included in monthly cost of $55. 218-444-5606.

Jan. 9 Headwaters School of Music and the Arts presents Jewelry 101 with Christina Thorne. Learn basic techniques of jewelry making, gain a general knowledge of proper tool selection and use, protective safety procedures and basic stranding and wire linking techniques. 10 - 3 p.m. All supplies will be available from the artist. Jan. 15 - 17 “Hansen’s Grill - MN Nice on Ice” an original musical comedy conceived by Cate Belleveau and written by Teri Herrington will be performed on the ice off the lake front of Paul and Babe for the Bemidji Polar Daze. NoteworthyA reception was held to celebrate the new stained glass window in the First Lutheran Church Narthex. Marley Kaul, Bemidji artist, designed the new window and Gay-tee Stained Glass Studios in Minneapolis fabricated the window.

Travel and Study Grant Program

The 2010 Travel and Study Grant Program will award grants to emerging creative artists. Minne-sota-based executive and program administrators working for nonprofit organizations in dance, film and video, and literature are also eligible to apply.

Deadline: March 8, 2010

Eligible disciplines: dance, film and video and literature.

The 2010 Travel and Study Grant Program is supported by the General Mills Foundation, the Art and Martha Kaemmer Fund of HRK Foundation, and the Jerome Foundation.
