FROM THE PRESIDENT’S DESK

The new map included in this prospectus depicts

already established infrastructure and new projects

along the MITEZ corridor and it highlights how our

region is already well positioned to benefit new

investors into the region.

At our May meeting held at Hughenden, members

agreed that the region’s single greatest advantage is

the transport corridor connecting our resources to

world markets and to be competitive, efficient road,

rail and port facilities are vital as we rely greatly on

transport and energy as key enablers for our

economic development.

At a time when developing Northern Australia is

attracting plenty of attention, MITEZ needs to

promote the relative advantages existing

infrastructure in our region can provide and convince

Governments of their responsibility to ensure these

networks enable industries in the north to remain

globally competitive.

MITEZ has a reputation as a solid organization, able

to speak with the one voice from a position of unity

and strength that demonstrates wide support for the

region’s views and priorities which is necessary when

taking a case to State and Commonwealth

Governments as well as government agencies

responsible for policy decisions or funding programs.

At MITEZ meetings we provide a forum to explore

and evaluate visionary ideas and new concepts with

many of these being further investigated through

feasibility studies undertaken by MITEZ to determine

the viability and benefits as well as any risks

associated with potential projects. These studies can

assist potential investors looking at opportunities in

the region.

MITEZ’s focus is on the bigger picture issues affecting

our region, such as resource development, irrigation

and agriculture, efficiency of our supply chains,

energy, water supply, communications and

innovation.

If your organization is interested to work with others

to guide the future development of the MITEZ region

and its communities, I urge you to consider the

importance and benefits of MITEZ membership to

help in achieving your corporate goals and being

recognized as a key stakeholder, contributor or

investor.

I warmly thank you for your interest in our region and

look forward to welcoming your renewed or new

membership of Mount Isa to Townsville Economic

Zone Inc. for the coming year ahead.

2017/2018 - THE YEAR AHEAD

Established in 1994, the Mount Isa to Townsville

Economic Zone (MITEZ) fulfils a key role to monitor

and respond to the economic environment, the

issues, factors, the opportunities and threats

affecting and impacting the sustainability of

businesses and industry across the Mount Isa to

Townsville corridor.

MITEZ’s members are united in supporting efforts to

facilitate the economic advancement of the

industries, businesses and communities located in the

local Government areas between Mount Isa and

Townsville. By working together collaboratively,

MITEZ members are able to influence many of the

policies and decisions by other levels of Government

that often result in better outcomes for the region.

By participating at MITEZ’s regular meetings,

members are able to contribute to the discussion

about regional priorities and share any concerns

about issues that may be affecting their business so

that as a combined group MITEZ can tackle such

issues head on to identify possible solutions.

Many of these issues such as freight, transport,

energy, water and communications can have

significant impact on our members and MITEZ is able

to lobby Governments to invest in improved services

and infrastructure. Also, as a non for profit

organisation, MITEZ is able to receive grants to

conduct detailed investigations, feasibility studies and

technical reports.

In recent years, MITEZ has taken on much larger

projects on behalf of our members and local

Governments and has a network of consultants and

experts in a range of fields to call upon and carry out

highly specialised work that is usually well regarded

by Government as well as potential investors.

Projects to be completed this year include:

▪ Assisting Cloncurry Shire Council to establish

a trial plot for bio-fuels.

▪ Developing two new themed tourist routes

between Cairns and the North West.

▪ Investigate the feasibility of an Intermodal

Freight and Logistics Hub for Mount Isa.

▪ Investigate viable options for SWER lines in

the McKinlay Shire.

▪ Detailed Feasibility Study for a major dam on

the Cloncurry River.

▪ Assessing potential clusters for infrastructure

at mineralised zones within NW Queensland.

With numerous challenges facing the region, MITEZ

takes the time to seek out the facts and relevant

information and to analyse the situation before

deciding on a position that best reflects the interest

of our members. MITEZ’s views and feedback is often

sought by organisations undertaking strategic

planning and community consultation on behalf of

Government.

As a ‘big-picture’ organisation, MITEZ provides

members the opportunity to discuss and agree on

collaborative regional responses to many of the

important issues affecting the region. Members are

invited to present their ideas and feedback and to

discuss these with other members whose experience

and local knowledge is valuable in guiding MITEZ’s

goals and future direction.

With challenges facing the Mount Isa to Townsville

corridor such as transport, energy and water which

are all vital to enable growth and new opportunities

for industry and communities, our chances of success

are far greater if we are seen to be working together

as one.

With the support of our local governments and

corporate members MITEZ will continue to work with

and for and you to achieve greater outcomes towards

meeting these challenges head on during 2017-18

and beyond.
