Theme of the Seminar: Whither Management Research?
is a forum of researchers and research scholars in Management and Commerce, formed with an objective to promote and propagate the ethical research in the concerned disciplines among the researchers and research scholars which is of relevance to the organizations, entrepreneurs, government and society. It aims to bring in thought leadership in the frontier areas of management and commerce through seminal research and disseminate the knowledge for the larger benefits of the research community, government and society.
Amongst the various initiatives taken by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, which enjoys an enviable track record as a proponent of education with Indian culture and values in the area of higher management education, M.P. Birla Institute of Management at Bangalore, is a premier management institute in Karnataka. Since inception in the year 1999, under the patronage of Late Smt. Priyamvada Devi Birla, the college has progressed and grown from a humble student strength of 30 to an impressive 360 students for the two-year integrated M.B.A. programme offered under the umbrella of Bangalore University. Besides, grooming creative, productive and efficient managers for the industry, the Institute is committed to inculcating Basic Human Values and a sense of Nobility, Righteousness and Excellence in the students. The college, an ISO certified and NAAC accredited institution, has the support of a very high quality teaching faculty – a very healthy mix of career academicians as well as senior industry stalwarts.
Research is a central part of the academic mission of many business schools and a collective endeavor of all management education institutions at large all over. There is changing popularity of management research topics from time to time. Managers and management scholars can gain or lose interest in management topics over time (Abrahamson, 1996). Throughout the last sixty years, the popularity of individual management topics has ebbed and flowed. This phenomenon suggests that the popularity of management topics follows a life cycle (Gibson and Tesone, 2001).
The majority of research on management fads and fashions has shown that many management topics ride a wave of popularity and then die out (Abrahamson and Fairchild, 1999). Management concepts can become institutionalized and ingrained in organizations, and thus become less temporary and more permanent in popularity and use. Organizations can change and adopt a fad/fashion so much so that they change their routines, standard operating procedures, infrastructure support systems, and fully integrate a management concept into their very organizational being (Dale, Elkjaer, van der Wiele, and Williams, 2001).
There has been growing influence of economics, psychology and sociology on current management research, and the danger of an increasingly fetishistic and
formulaic approach, which might lead to stale and narrow contributions. It has become imperative to ask bigger, better, and more challenging questions compared to orthodoxy in management research and engaging in modes of research that are not only intellectually challenging but that also have the potential of making a real impact on management practice. Management research must provide cutting-edge knowledge and methods and valid indigenous theories to guide practice and to create a vibrant research community.
This seminar is open to all academicians, research scholars and management professionals. It is very useful for those who are pursuing their research work, prospective research scholars and faculty members of management and commerce courses who are really passionate about research.
