Peter Harrell, Jr. is president of Harrell Communications and a national trainer for the Verbal Judo Institute. He has a BA Degree in Theatre Arts and Organizational Development from St. Edwards University. Peter formed his company in 1995 and hails from Austin, Texas. In addition to Verbal Judo, Peter is certified to train Dispute Resolution, Managing Group Conflict, and three of Franklin Covey’s top Leadership programs. Peter has provided training and consultant work for The University of Texas at Austin, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, the Texas Association of School Boards, Nassau N.Y. BOCES, Gary Job Corps, the City of Austin, and many other public and private entities. He is also a National Institute of Corrections Trainer.

Recently retired from a 20-year career with the state of Texas, Peter excelled as an executive management trainer. Peter was given the responsibility of creating, implementing, and delivering leadership training for executive managers and supervisors in seven of the largest agencies in the state. Peter continues a 35-year acting career with roles in 50 national and regional commercials, 25 movies, 20 theatrical productions, and over 40 roles in television. Peter’s engaging, dynamic style of facilitating has both entertained and left audiences with a truly “value-added” experience.

Verbal Judo teaches a philosophy of how to look creatively at conflict and then use specific strategies and tactics to find peaceful resolutions. Verbal Judo teaches a means of creatively examining problems and reaching solutions while preserving individual dignity and organizational integrity. Maintaining a “professional face” is crucial if employees are to remain under emotional control during disagreements or conflicts and able to effectively find solutions to these potentially violent encounters. Performance must always be part of the professional process; it ensures true professionalism in all working environments: with our subordinates, peers, and supervisors, with other departments in our organization, and most importantly–with our primary contacts.

Organizations can expect that once their employees are trained in Verbal Judo, they will know the following: How to use words to achieve professional purposes and how to resist using language to express personal feelings, thus controlling themselves inside so they can exert control on the outside.

How to employ empathy and the art of “representation” to become Contact Professionals, maintaining self-control, and staying in contact with the needs of the organization and their audience.

How to effectively deliver words that are on target by first understanding the receiver’s point of view, including the “five step” approach to persuading difficult people.

The art of “translation” – to ensure that communication is on target and understood by the receiver.

The art of “mediation” – delivering words in the form of a personal appeal, in order to achieve voluntary compliance from people who are under temporary emotional influences, ranging from uncertainty and confusion to anger, mistrust, and even prejudice.

How to use the four appeals of persuasion and the twenty-four principles of street smarts.

The five conditions where words fail and employees must move beyond verbal communication.

Probation and parole officers, law enforcement officers, corporate employees (human resources, security, administrative and front-line staff), caseworkers, CASA volunteers, general and substance abuse counselors, educators and school administrators, and all other related professionals.

Credit hours will be submitted to TCLEOSE, CJAD and TJPC for approval. CEUs will be awarded for Social Workers and LPC/LMFTs. Amarillo College is approved by the State Board of Educator Certification as a provider of Continuing Professional Education (CPE). Amarillo College is approved by the Texas Certification Board of Addiction Professionals Standards Committee, Provider Number 1743-06, to provide six (6) hours general and CCJP credit. Expires 08/09. Complaints about provider or workshop content may be directed to the TCBAP Standards Committee, 1005 Congress Avenue, Ste. 460, Austin, Texas 78701, Fax Number (512) 476-7297. General CEUs will be awarded to all other participants for individual submission to their respective licensing agencies. For successful completion, this program must be attended in its entirety.
