Thanks to RSS’ Michelle Ciko, Denise O’Brien, Tony Siracusa, and John Paduano, the event was so well orchestrated that it went without a hitch. After a brief introduction by moderator, Bill DeVita, each candidate was given a 12-15 minute segment to speak about who they are, what they stand for, and how they would respond to mental health issues if elected. While speaking, the legislative district which they represent was projected on a large screen. Following their presentations, MHANYS Executive Director, Glenn Liebman asked each to respond to select questions submitted in advance by audience members. Most questions pertained to the candidate’s positions on the 85-90% unemployment rate of persons with mental illness, their view on the need for increased housing and various community support services, and where mental health stands as a priority in these tough budget years. The success of Candidates Night sets the course for similar events in the future and hopefully will open the door to RSS & MHANYS Sponsor “Candidates Night” As the candidates for the NYS Assembly and Senate scramble to make their pitch in the final weeks before the November 6 th election, eleven came to The Desmond Hotel and Conference Center on the evening of October 18 th to address an audience of mental health consumers and professionals. The event, entitled, Candidates Night, was sponsored by Rehabilitation Support Services, Inc. (RSS) and the Mental Health Association of New York State (MHANYS). While the event was hosted by RSS and MHANYS, Joe Lemmond can be credited as the driving force behind it. The 125 seat capacity of the Desmond’s Town Hall was completely filled, leaving standing room only.
