Relief Efforts provided by SK E&C in Laos PDR
Last month, there was an unfortunate situation in Laos where a dam washed out, causing damage
to the land downstream from the construction site. SK E&C was one of the entities involved in the
construction of this project. Once SK E&C received notice of the incident, SK E&C immediate
organized an emergency response team from SK E&C headquarters and sent the team to the
construction site.
SK E&C’s President, Jae Hyun Ahn, was one of the first members to arrive in Laos in order to work
with the Lao Government and the state government in order to assist with rescue efforts and
relief activities. SK E&C’s President Ahn will continue to meet with government officials in order to
ensure that SK E&C can provide relief to those affected by the incident.
On July 27th, SK E&C sent an emergency response team of approximately 50 SK E&C employees
to Laos. The main goal of the emergency response team is to assess the situation, help those
affected by the flooding, help restore the area, and mitigate any further damage.
SK E&C brought relief supplies such as medicine, food, and clothes. SK E&C will also be
providing temporary housing for the victims.
SK E&C is making an effort to restore infrastructure in the flooded region of Attapeu Province.
SK E&C has already begun reconstruction of roads which are integral to supplying equipment and
relief supplies. The main road repair, as shown below, is an 8 km road in Attapeu Province.
Given the flooding in the area, restoration of the roads requires removing the flood waters prior
to compacting the soil in order to ensure that the road is smooth and level.
We are deeply saddened by the events that occurred and it is with a very heavy heart we extend
our condolences to the victims. Though it is very unfortunate that this happened to the great
people of Laos, we will do our best to assist all those affected and restore the damaged area as
soon as possible.
At the request of the Attapeu Provincial government, we also began construction of temporary
housing for displaced persons in the Sanamxay area.
This temporary housing facility is being constructed on a 10,000㎡ plot of land and will contain a
150-bed housing complex. The people staying at this temporary housing facility will also be
provided basic facilities such as schools and other necessities.
In addition to restoring infrastructure, SK E&C emergency response team is also involved in the
installation of electrical facilities, lighting facilities, and septic tanks. The emergency response
team is also working with the local villages to provide medical attention and repair homes and
village facilities.
