• EDSO: We will need storage « at whatever cost » with anincrease of the share of RE.
• RTE: we should stop focussing on conventional economicanalysis when it comes to storage (Tesla powerwall is maybe noteconomical, but it is sexy), and should consider the digitaltransformation
• JRC: We should not only consider storage for mitigation ofClimate Change, but also for Adaptation to CC.
• Eurelectric: for a new market design, we should start from thisrule: everyone going to the grid should be balanced. No moresimple injection of electricity in the grid.
• Tesla has been mentioned 5 times. Tesla appears as a mindchanger, enabling the blossoming of game changers.

Innovation project ESTORE: Smart controller for storing Electrical Energy in coldstores
Aart de Geus
CC-Benelux / Smart Cities
December 8th 2015 ESTORE
• Electricity demand is not constant throughout the day • Renewable electricity production peaks at random times • Further growth of renewable electricity production on going
and wanted • The EU electricity grid needs FLEXIBILITY - at low costs
Introduction
2
December 8th 2015 ESTORE
• Use the flexibility of the cold stores to store extra energy by the Estore controller and reduce costs
• Keep the quality of the frozen goods
• Market: • EU: 71 million M3 cold stores • Electricity consumption by cold stores: • 4500 GWh cold stores capacity: 850 MW

Smart Estore controller • Estore controller:
• System identification • Optimizer for control strategy • Using the APX 24hr ahead electricity pricing • Calculates the lowest price strategy for the cold store by:
• Controlling the temperature between -18 and -24 C • dynamic programming using price, cold store temperature
and outdoor temperature • Keeping the quality of the frozen foods • hardware/software tool is add-on to OEM control
