Smartcare is a major telehealthcare programme aimed at improving thehealth,care and well being of the over 50s, with a specific focus on fallsprevention. The project operates across Ayrshire, Arran and the ClydeValley (which includes Renfrewshire) and supports the person and theircarer to co-ordinate the services they wish to use. Carers can sign up fortheir online self help tool at https://portal.livingitup.org.uk/

Duke of Edinburgh Award

This is the joint Bronze Duke of Edinburgh's assessed expedition. It involved young carersfrom Perth and Kinross and Renfrewshire and it took place over 14-15 June 2014.

The group used Glen Almond for their adventure, starting at Newton Bridge in the SmaGlen outside Crieff and finishing at Ardtalnaig on Loch Tay. This was an excellentopportunity for young people who come from a different geographical area but face thesame issues in life to undertake a joint learning experience. Friendships were formed andthe teams worked together to pass their assessment. Members from the groups also hadthe chance to catch up again at the Scottish Young Carer's Festival.

This is the second time a group from these areas have completed a jointexpedition. Hopefully both groups will complete further expeditionstogether and share more positive learning experiences.

Getting a break from your caring role is often essential to enable you to recharge yourbatteries and continue to care. We are very proud of the quality of support we offer Carersthrough our excellent home based respite sitting service and befriending project and haveoften been asked if people can purchase these services. We are now in the position to sayyes as we will be launching a new service which Carers are able to purchase from us.

The service will provide a personalised, responsive, high quality respite care serviceincluding personal care - showering, getting up in the morning or assisting to bed anddomiciliary tasks such as washing up, laundry. The service will respond to the needs of theCarer and the service user that includes all age ranges, conditions, disabilities or illness. Theservice will be provided by our trained workers or volunteers.

New Service

Whilst taking part in arts and craft activities can help improve our own health and wellbeing italso allows us to learn more skills, meet new people and provides us with great sense ofachievement. It could also help the Centre by providing items to sell at our various fundraisingventures.

So if you would be interested in being involved in this please come along to our first meeting.

We are looking to start an Arts and Craft Group forcarers either to learn new skills or to spend timeon skills they already have.

To see how we could develop this we would like toorganise a meeting for those interested. It will beon Monday 22nd September at 1.00pm, here in theCarers Centre.

Originally Project Oskar was all about second hand furniture. Today it is much more. If youhave a home related problem, chances are they can sort it. Whether it’s painting, decorating,gardening, clearing out properties, the list seems endless. The gardening alone would rivalAlan Titchmarsh’s tv program, “Love Your Garden”. General clearing, hard landscaping, treepruning, fencing…………………… If you want something done then just give them a ring andthey’ll work out a price with you.

And the second hand furniture? Yes, they still do that. Relying on donations from the public(and always looking for white goods), they aim to provide an affordable choice for peoplemost in need. Project Oskar has a vast warehouse of goods on display. So who can go to thewarehouse? Well, anyone. It’s also open to the general public. Turn up and you mayexperience that serendipitous moment of finding that very thing you suddenly realise you justcannot live without.

We want your help to identify more Carers to enable them to get support from the Centre

As you will probably know from your own experience, you may not think of yourself as aCarer. You will see yourself as a mum, dad, husband, wife, partner, son, daughter orneighbour. You are a Carer if the person you are looking after cannot not live in their homewithout your support. Once you recognise that you are a Carer then you can begin to accesssupport for your role.

One of the best ways for Carers to be identified is by health professionals who are workingwith the cared for person. We are asking if you can let them know what help and support youget from the Carers Centre so that they can see how it has helped you and may help others.

So next time you visit your GP or see the nurse please tell them how the Centre hassupported you.

Our next fund raising venture brings us up to the preparation for Christmas, with us having astall at the Christmas lights switch on which will be in November. We will also be looking fordonations for our Christmas hamper which we will raffle.
