Dear Friends and Colleagues,

The Cable Center tells the story of this dynamic industry. As the new president and CEO of The Cable Center, the focus of my tenure will be to ensure that we continue to share cable’s legacy and contributions to society through resources easily accessible around the world. One such program is The Center’s Hauser Oral and Video History project, which gathers first-hand accounts from the women and men who built the industry, and those who are leading it forward.

Another way we recognize cable’s heritage is through the Cable Hall of Fame. The Cable Hall of Fame is the premier tribute that honors our industry and is The Center’s signature fundraising event.

2016 earned the reputation as a monumental year in cable. I think we can all agree that our industry is in uncharted territory with significant change in the market and positive technological evolution.

As the industry and world change, so too does The Cable Center. We are recalibrating our focus into three core areas: we will continue to steward the legacy and history of the industry; celebrate the achievements of industry leaders; and to help determine the third area of focus, I am currently working with an ad hoc committee convened by the Board. To date, we have conducted interviews with many of our key constituents and held focus groups of industry millennials, all to gain insight into establishing a forward looking initiative.

FROM PRESIDENT & CEO

The input and feedback during this process has been robust and quite interesting. I want to share with you a few things we heard from our millennial focus groups:

They are proud of our history and believe that we must continue our work preserving the history, and that the Library is important to these efforts;

They are passionate about, and proud to be in, the cable industry;

They believe that they and the cable industry are innovative and entrepreneurial; and

They believe The Cable Center should focus on future innovation, and innovators, in the industry.

The Center also worked on a creative solution to increase rental revenue and help support the mission side of the business. I explored multiple options, and am thrilled to announce that we are partnering with AMP10x to form a curated co-working venture in the building, focused on the media and entertainment industry, opening in 2017. This venture provides numerous collaboration opportunities for our mission-based programs and will increase awareness of The Cable Center. Income from renting this space and strengthening our fundraising efforts will help ensure The Center’s healthy financial future.

To expand our role as connectors, we have partnered with numerous organizations including: CableLabs, Cable Europe, SCTE and Project-X-ITE at the University of Denver.

The Center is home to renowned and unique assets, and I’m not talking just about our archives, collections, staff and gorgeous building. Our greatest asset is YOU, our supporters and advocates. We are extremely appreciative of our industry ‘village’ who has offered financial support, volunteer hours and general enthusiasm about our work here at The Center. Thanks to all of you, we have some great projects coming down the pipe and I look forward to sharing them with you in 2017.

Warm Regards,

Jana L. Henthorn

STORIES OF CABLE’S FINEST

HALL OF FAME

7

The 2016 Cable Hall of Fame celebration was a tremendous success. The 19th annual celebration was full of memorable moments including the introduction of our new president and CEO Jana L. Henthorn by Jill Campbell and Nomi Bergman; and a surprise bagpiper to close out the festivities in honor of the late Glenn Jones.

The Cable Hall of Fame is the premier tribute that honors those who have made a lasting contribution to the advancement of our industry and is The Center’s signature fundraising event. Since 1998, 121 illustrious individuals have been inducted. Every year the support for this celebration grows and the program has become even more meaningful with expanded international participation. Recognition increases every year, with press coverage before, during and after, as well as high visibility on social media.

In 2016, The Cable Center exceeded its fundraising milestone for the third consecutive year when the Cable Hall of Fame raised more than $1 million: totaling $1,000,500. The Cable Hall of Fame consistently meets its financial goals and attracts more than 600 attendees.

The program began with the presentation of the Bresnan Ethics in Business Award. This special award honors the memory of one of The Cable Center’s founders and chairmen, Bill Bresnan, who demonstrated the highest ethical standards in both his professional and personal life. Created in 2011 in partnership with Mr. Bresnan’s family and administered by The Cable Center, the award recognizes leaders in the industry who best exemplify its namesake’s commitment to honesty and integrity in business. The 2016

recipient Amos Hostetter, chairman of Pilot House Associates, LLC, received a standing ovation as he accepted the award.

Congratulations once again to our seven 2016 inductees: Mika Brzezinski & Joe Scarborough, MSNBC’s “Morning Joe;” Pat Esser, president, Cox Communications, Inc.; John D. Evans, chairman & CEO, Evans Telecommunications Co.; Tom Rogers, chairman, TiVo Inc.; Robert J. Stanzione, chairman & CEO, ARRIS; and John O. “Dubby” Wynne, retired president & CEO, Landmark Communications, Inc.

Katty Kay, lead anchor on the BBC’s flagship U.S. newscast “BBC World News America,” emceed the 19th annual Cable Hall of Fame. Kay has had a storied career with the BBC covering major U.S. and international events and interviewing a range of international figures and newsmakers. Kay also emceed the 2012 Cable Hall of Fame celebration.

The Cable Hall of Fame and ultimately the programs at The Cable Center are always generously supported by influential companies from all segments of the industry through sponsorships and table sales. Major 2016 sponsors included ARRIS, Bright House Networks, Carlsen Resources Inc., Comcast, Alpha Technologies/ CommScope, Discovery Communications, Food Network, Rovi, AMC Networks, CNN/Turner, John D. Evans Foundation, Liberty Global, Shaw, Technicolor, Time Warner Cable and TIVO.

DEDICATED TO PRESERVING CABLE’S LEGACY

LIBRARY

9

We are proud to be the definitive resource and archive for the cable industry’s past, present and future. The Barco Library, offering an industry retrospective from 1948 to the present, is home to a rich collection of resources that can’t be found anywhere else. The original source material includes oral histories, manuscripts, memorabilia, media and photographs. The Barco Library is routinely consulted for answers and research projects on cable’s role in the development of television.

Kathryn Cramer Brownell, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of History at Purdue University was one of the scholars who spent time in 2016 utilizing the Barco Library’s resources for research. Professor Brownell, working on her new book, was referred to the Barco Library by Brian Lamb and Steve Scully at C-SPAN. “I had no idea it would be so informative,” Brownell said. “Every preconceived idea I had about the industry has changed while doing this research.” Her favorite resources at the library are the video collections that offer first-hand accounts and primary source material.

Twelve oral and video histories were filmed in the last half of 2016. Recent interviews available on the website include Paul Glist, Martha Soehren, Tamara Franklin, Howard Horowitz, and Rob Kennedy. Library and Archives Manager Brian Kenny said, “The oral histories are one of the best things we do. Our subjects are creating primary sources for the history of the industry at the most personal level. There is no better place to learn about the connections between people in the industry.”

The Virtual Reality Archives Exhibit envisioned as “Cable History in 40 Objects,” was completed and made available on cablecenter.org. Website visitors can now download the

project, ‘step into’ The Cable Center’s building and manipulate cable related artifacts in our virtual archives. Experience watching our oral history videos in the virtual Malone Theater on the big screen, or, be enveloped in our 360° video theater. A downloadable version is available now for those with an HTC Vive headset, as well as a basic version in 2D for Windows desktop. The exhibit will also be available for download to other VR platforms via the Steam store in 2017. An advisory committee consisting of Jim Chiddix, Ron Hranac, Lew Suders, Mike Hayashi and Paul Maxwell helped choose objects and recorded audio descriptions for the exhibit.

The Barco Library gratefully accepted several archive donations over the year to add to its immense collection. Donors included: ARRIS (six boxes of set-top boxes, remotes, records from General Instrument Corporation); David Eng (engineering books and equipment); James Allen (cable marketing memorabilia), and Ruth Woody, wife of renowned cable engineer Wendell Woody (equipment, tools, books). The Library also acquired the entire 90s-era headend from Jones Intercable.

Photo digitization efforts proceeded, with approximately 750 photos being added to the online collection in 2016 (see them here: archives.cablecenter.org), and the entire run of the Searle publications TVC/Cable Television Business was digitized, covering the years 1964 to 1990.

ADD FUSION AND STIR: NEW FRONTIERS OF CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE

CENTRAL

The Cable Center has been at the forefront of the customer experience (CX) movement for more than a decade – through the James M. Cox Endowed Chair in Customer Experience Management, the work of The Center’s Senior Fellows, and The Cable Center Customer Care Committee (C5). C5 is the home of thought leadership and research for the industry regarding customer experience, defining, and developing excellence and best practices in customer experience management (CEM).

Today’s CEM programs have moved beyond a tactical focus. While execution remains fundamental to success, companies have discovered the long-term payoff for CEM investment lies in deeper understanding of customer behavior, including the drivers of loyalty and advocacy. This has led to increased interest in customer journey mapping, customer-centric cultures, the role of employee engagement in customer experience, and the role of emotion in building and protecting brand loyalty.

The C5 spring 2016 meeting, held at The Cable Center in Denver, was organized around advancing the practice of CEM by bringing insights and best practices from outside the industry. In-depth discussions were led by C5 sponsor representatives from Nexidia and Netcracker along with a dive into CX trends by an expert in the field.

The fall 2016 C5 meeting, held at Rogers Communications in Montreal, Canada, was organized around strategic innovation and shared learning. Highlights included presentations by CTAM, American Express and Senior Fellow Dr. Charles Patti sharing information about The Cable Center’s work in Design Thinking through a partnership with Stanford University.

“ TODAY’S CEM PROGRAMS HAVE MOVED BEYOND A TACTICAL FOCUS.”

“Add Fusion and Stir: The Creative Magic of Blended Thinking .... And How You Can Prosper From It” was a panel discussion at INTX regarding the subscription economy and how ‘learning from others’ can be used to reinvent customer service and reinvigorate a company’s bottom line.

Moderated by Dr. Charles Patti, the panel was comprised of Jon Ezrine, chief operating officer and SVP, Nexidia, Inc. at NICE Systems; Lisa Modisette, VP and Business Solutions Executive, Netcracker Technology; Graham Tutton, VP Customer Journey & Analytics, Comcast Cable. They discussed how the concept of fusion has transformed and revolutionized industries; best practices from companies that have adopted the fusion approach; and key findings about innovation within the subscription economy.

“Customer experience and customer care are top priorities in the subscription economy, and a primary area of focus for The Cable Center,” said Jana L. Henthorn, president and CEO, The Cable Center.

Current members include executives from among the leading cable operator companies in the U.S.A. (Comcast, Cox, Mediacom, GCI, CableOne); Canada (Rogers); Europe (Liberty Global); and South America (Cablevision Argentina).

C5 efforts are led by Dr. Charles Patti, The Cable Center’s Senior Fellow and James M. Cox Endowed Chair in Customer Experience Management, in conjunction with Senior Fellows Drs. Ron Rizzuto and Maria van Dessel. The Senior Fellows develop the meeting agendas, drive an ongoing research agenda that is set by the interests of C5 members, and also offer workshops, seminars, and training in CEM.

TOP TEN TIDBITS

12

January 1, 2016 marked a notable day in The Cable Center’s history as Jana L. Henthorn became the first female president and CEO of the nonprofit in its 31 years in operation. Henthorn, a seasoned industry veteran, Cable TV Pioneer and a charter fellow of the Betsy Magness Leadership Institute, has been with The Center since 2004.

In early April, Henthorn was the inaugural speaker for WICT Rocky Mountain’s inaugural “HerStory” webinar series. Henthorn discussed how big breaks come out of the most surprising places, why the fine print of the job description really does matter, consolidation and the power of intention, and the responsibility of women to help other women.

2016 saw improvements to The Center’s building. The studio was rebranded as TechStudios @TCC, with an updated video studio and an audio suite. TechStudios @TCC will off icially launch in January 2017 serving production needs of the mission, and also as a revenue generator by renting it out to clients. Work was also done to lower energy consumption, which trimmed 7% from the utility bill compared to the previous year.

It has been a banner year for new president and CEO Jana L. Henthorn. Henthorn was named by “Multichannel News” as a 2016 Woman to Watch. She was honored during their Wonder Woman lunch in March in New York City. Additionally, for the second year in a row, she was named as one of the Most Powerful Women in Cable by “Cablefax” in November.

6. POWERFUL WOMAN AT THE HELM

The Cable Center developed a panel presented at Cable Congress in Poland in June titled: “Virtual or Real? The Business of Virtual Reality.” This was an exciting opportunity to engage conference goers with a thoughtful and robust look at the varied aspects of VR and the positive impact it can have on the industry. The expert panel was comprised of renowned European and American VR and cable industry leaders. Jana Henthorn introduced the panel and gave a short synopsis about the VR activities The Center focused on in 2016.

The Virginia Cable Telecommunications Association (VCTA) invited The Cable Center’s Jana L. Henthorn to give the keynote speech at their 50th annual dinner in the fall of 2016. Henthorn spoke about the legacy of the industry, complete with photos from our extensive archive and she commented on the uncertain, yet exciting path ahead.

The year ended with The Cable Center on the cutting edge. We created a special video holiday greeting for everyone, using virtual and augmented reality technologies that The Center has been exploring over the past two years. We invite you to view a video of our 2016 Holiday Card on our website.

As part of The Center’s ongoing efforts to increase global access to the Denver-based facility, we launched Google Street View Interior. Google Street View is a technology featured in Google Maps and Google Earth that provides panoramic views from positions along many streets in the world. The Cable Center is utilizing a new feature of the product, which creates a 360 degree scan of the building’s interior, and allows viewers to enter the building and ‘walk around.’
