Awareness programs on Professional ethics

An induction program for the new students is organized in COER every year. Dean student welfare used to

familiarize the new students about the code of conduct of the COER and, professional ethics.

Induction program 2019-20 for the new students

i. Opening Phase was held on Monday Aug 05, 2019 with arrival of students, Registration and

Hostel Allotment.

ii. As per guidelines of AICTE the Initial Phase was started with welcome of students and complete

Orientation Program on Tuesday Aug.06,2019 in Vardhman Auditorium. It was followed by visit

of students in campus to get introduced with various facilities. Also Alumna Dr. Garima Singh,

IT 2008 Pass out, shared her success story with the new entrants.

iii. Physical and Sports activities including Yoga was coordinated by Sports Officers Mr.Ramesh

Singh Bisht and Mr. Kishan Singh Som. It was conducted in morning 6:30 AM to 7:15 AM every

day in Sports ground and Auditorium. Sports activity comprises of Football, Volleyball,

Badminton, Table Tennis, Chess, Carom, Running, Free Hand Exercise, Flexibility, Strength

Exercise, Speed Training, Endurance Training, Multi-gym Training, Recreational Games etc.

iv. Lecture and Activity based on Universal Human Values and techno-entrepreneurial awareness

was to be conducted in Forenoon Session during 9:00- 10:00 AM. It was initiated with lecture of

Dr. S P Gupta, Director General COER on Wednesday Aug 07,2019 on “Opportunities to Excel”.

Later on Thursday Aug 08, 2019 it was continued with lecture on “Leadership Quality” by Maj

Gen Dr O P Soni (DG-SM). Mr. B.D Patel presented a lecture on “Activities of Importance

Available in the Centre of Excellence” Friday on Aug 09,2019.

v. On Aug.07,2019 and Aug.08,2019 the Industrial Visit were organized for students. The exposure

to industries like Bajaj Sons Pvt Ltd, Bhagwanpur , Roorkee and Munjal Showa Ltd, SIDCUL,

Haridwar were coordinated by Mr Thomas Mathew, Mr Vishal Chauhan, Mr N.K.Agrawal & Ms

Reena Rana .

vi. On Saturday Aug. 10,2019; a team of alumni was invited to motivate newly joined young minds.

The dais was graced by our alumni Dr Sanjeev Kumar 2004 Batch- ET; Mr Vartul Mittal 2005

Batch – ME; Mr Saurabh Bansal 2011 Batch CS; Mr Amit Agrawal 2012 Batch- CS ; Mrs

Saumya Gururani (IAS) 2013 Batch-IT and Ms Monica Pawar 2016 Batch-ME. They have very

beautifully presented their experiences and shared the success mantra.

vii. On Monday Aug 12, 2019 a lecture on topic “Time Line of Civil Engineering’ was delivered by

Mr Shashank Yadav. On Tuesday, Aug 13, 2019 Dr Romesh Kumar Sharma delivered his lecture

on “Role and Significance of Environmental Education”. Students were excited to attend the

lecture given by Dr Nitesh Dutt on “Artificial Training of Sub Conscious Mind to Improve

Memory Power” on Wednesday Aug 14,2019. “How to Utilize Digital Media for Knowledge

Upgradation” was discussed well by Mr Varun Paratap Singh on Friday Aug 16, 2019 where

students got lot of details about refreshing knowledge, upgradation to the level of innovation. On

Friday Aug.16,2019 the alumni Mr Anant Jayant Natu ET, Mr Rajneesh Yadav ET, Mr Atul

Kumar ET, Mr Abhishek Kumar Gupta ET, Gaurav Arya ET, Mr Punit Mittal EN, Mr Udit

Gupta EN and Vishad Mittal EN all 2003 pass out batch shared their views with students and

motivated them through their thoughts and experiences

viii. On Saturday Aug 17, 2019 a lecturer on “Wellness of College Students” covering the recent

issues of Depression, Anxiety, Frustration and similar disorders growing among young students

was well presented with remedial measures by expert Dr Mrs Shikha Jain; who is students’

counsellor at IIT Roorkee.

ix. On Monday Aug 19,2019; our learned expert was Dr R P Saini Prof AHEC IIT Roorkee who

delivered a lecturer on “Scope of Renewable Energy in India” and shared his noble initiatives for

development of various machineries of paramount importance for peoples of Uttarakhand. It was

his great achievement to produce hydropower from running water of Upper Ganges Canal. Prof

G.C.Mishra motivated the students through his thoughts on “Character Building and Nation

Building Among Youth ” on Tuesday Aug 20,2019. It was followed by lecture on “Impact of

Plastic On Environment and Its Sustainability” by Ms Kashmira Majhi. On Wednesday

Aug.21,2019 at 09:00 AM, an experienced photographer Mr Shushant Singhal (Free Lance Photo

Artist, Saharanpur) was invited to present lecture cum demonstration on “New Paradigms in

Photography”.

x. Dr Varalakshmi B delivered a lecture on Thursday Aug 22,2019 to make the students to

understand the “Importance of Time Management” to achieve good marks in examination, to

excel in academics and future career. On Friday Aug 23, 2019 “Short Trick in Mathematics”

discussed by Dr Mohit Gupta

xi. New entrants got a detailed presentation on “Importance of Discipline” by Prof V.K.Singh Dean

SW, and “Importance of Human Values” was discussed in a detailed manner by Prof D.V.Gupta

Dean BS&H.

xii. Creative Complementary Arts Session was held in Forenoon Session during 11:00AM to

01:00PM under supervision of Dr Kamal Kapoor, Mr Akhil Dangwal, and Mr Bhupal Arya with

assistance of student coordinator of Technical Committee and Cultural Committee. It organized

the creative arts activity like collage making, making some stable structure using ice-cream sticks

and glue like bridges, huts, furniture and students mainly focussed with interest in creative art

activity using Adobe Illustrator software for creating logos, graphics, cartoons etc. On the other

hand, Cultural Activities like solo-duet-group song, music and dance practice, theatrical and

drama, and personality grooming activities were well organized in Auditorium by the leading

student members of Oorza.

xiii. Later, it was also contributed by Mrs Anuradha through activities based on the committee SPIC-

MACAY. The students got involved in activity like Rakhi making, Mask making, Poster making,

Indian Culture Quiz, and Movie Review.

xiv. In Afternoon Session on Wednesday Aug 07 during 02:00 PM to 03:00 PM, Mr Abhishek

Agrawal from An Ideal Self- A Charitable Initiative of Advait Life Education Foundation has

delivered a motivational lecture on “Holistic Individual Development Program” in Vardhman

Auditorium.

xv. In Afternoon Session during, 2019 03:00PM to 04:30 PM on Aug 07,2019 the students were

brought to their respective department where they got familiarization with different laboratories,

practicals & project works, research activities by faculty members. It was well managed session

which provided deep insight of their department along with its main activity. It creates interest

among students to become innovative.

xvi. On Thursday Aug.08,2019 during 02:00 pm - 03:30 pm an “Assessment Test for Learning Level

of Students” was conducted where on-line questions of objective type were asked to check the

level of knowledge of Students in different subjects.

xvii. On Aug.08,2019 during 03:30 pm - 04:30 pm, a meeting was organized with faculty advisors of

respective groups of each branch and section where students were apprised about various

activities, rules, procedures, attendance, test series and examination.

xviii. On Friday Aug.09,2019; a lecture on “Computing Technologies Used In Industries” was

delivered by guest speaker Mr Chandan Singh (Marketing Head CETPA Technology).

xix. In afternoon session on Monday Aug.12,2019 during 02:00PM to 03:00 PM, Dr. Rashmi Gupta

and Dr Pinki Chugh organized “Narrative - Story Telling Event” through Linguistic Committee

with an objective to test the public speaking skills of the students in English language. In

continuation during 03:00 PM to 04:30 PM a motivational movie “Super-30” was screened by

Mr Sharad Kumar Singh in Seminar Hall CE-105.

xx. A very interesting presentation with amalgamation of civil engineering, architectural aspects and

history behind “Taj Mahal” was given by eminent speaker Dr S.C. Handa (former professor IIT

Roorkee). It was organized on Tuesday Aug.13,2019 in afternoon session.

xxi. During 02;00PM to 03:00 PM on Wednesday Aug.14,2019, the “Art of Presentation and Public

Speaking” was discussed by Mr Mayank Dev. It was followed by presentations of Ms Ashita

Virmani on “Fundamentals of Electronics Engineering”, Mr Abhishek Verma on “Virtual

Laboratory” and Mr Amit Kumar on “Fundamentals of Electrical Engineering”.

xxii. In this sequence lectures were delivered on Friday Aug.16,2019 by Mr Sharad Kumar Singh on

“Familiarity with Computer”, “Basics of Civil Engineering – Building and Bridges” was

delivered by Mr Nishant Kumar; and in the end Dr (Ms) Aruna Tomar presented “Importance of

Engineering Physics”.

xxiii. On Monday Aug.19,2019 Dr (Mrs) Rashmi Gupta delivered a talk on “Proficiency in English”,

followed by lecture of Dr C.K.Bharadwaj on “Applications of Chemistry In Engineering”. Dr

Amar Nath was last speaker of the session who discussed “Importance of Mathematical Tools for

Engineering Students”.

xxiv. Our honored alumnus Mr Saurabh Mittal (2009 ET Pass out), Squadron Leader in IAF was

invited to deliver a motivational lecture and to share his experiences with new batch of students

on Tuesday Aug 20,2019 during 02:00PM to 03:00PM in Conference Hall (Admn Block). It was

followed by an interesting short movie “Man v/s Wild with Bear Grylls and our Hon’ble PM

Modi” was screened by Mr. Sharad Kumar Singh.

xxv. A short movie on social issues has also been presented and discussed by him. A beautiful

documentary on “Statue of Unity and Worlds Biggest Bridges” was presented by Mr Sharad

Kumar Singh in CE-105 during 02:00 PM- 3:00 PM.

xxvi. Closing Ceremony was held on Monday Aug 26,2019. It was started with Feed Back Session for

which the students were invited for sharing their views about Induction Program and associated

activities. The session got completion with word of Blessings by Director General Sir.

Lecture on ‘Opportunities to Excel’ by Hon’ble Prof. S.P. Gupta

An inspiring and knowledgeable lecture was delivered by Hon.’ ble Prof. S. P. Gupta sir on 07.08.19 in

Vardhman Auditorium wherein the students were made acquainted with the ABC of professional life. As

shared by Gupta sir A stands for attendance, regularity and discipline in life; B stands for branding one’s

talent for a successful life and C stands for cultured life which demands a person to be well behaved, humble

and grateful towards the Almighty. Prof. Gupta elaborated the topic with real life examples of COER alumni

and present students who have achieved success by following the ABC funda of life. He also informed

students about various certified courses and projects which are useful for students to upgrade their resumes’

and excel in their lives.

The lecture was attended by faculty and all the first year students with interest and enthusiasm.

Lecture on ‘Leadership Qualities’ by D.G. COER SM-Maj.Gen.Dr.O.P.Soni

A lecture was delivered by D.G. COER SM-Maj.Gen. Dr..O.P.Soni. The topic of the lecture was Leadership

Qualities. Dr. Soni emphasized on the quality of life lived. To become a true leader, he said that, various

traits are required. One should be a leader not in any particular field but overall, in his whole life we should

be a leader. A leader follows seven lessons of life throughout. Mr.Soni explained the seven lessons with

examples. These lessons are namely: Perseverance, being up-to-date, working in team, handling success,

exploiting strengths, being just and communication.

It was a motivational lecture for the students of first year.

Lecture on professional ethics by the Ex- Director COER; Prof. S.C Handa

A very enlightening and interesting talk was delivered by Prof. S.C. Handa, the former director COER, on

professional ethics.

He conducted a fun interaction with the first-year students. His words proved of his undying love for the

country. He started by telling the students about Taj Mahal. He made the students realise how advance we

were even in the old days and how we were able to construct a monument which is not only a symbol of love

but also one of the 7 wonders of the world. He explained the students about the exceptional architecture and

beauty of the monument and motivated them. Prof. Handa told them that with the current technology, the

entire world is at their hands and they can do wonders with their hardwork and dedication.

The session ended by presenting a momento to Prof. Handa by Director General, Prof. SP Gupta. He also

thanked him for the astounding and informative session. The students enjoyed greatly.

Faculty members, Dr. DV Gupta, Dr. VK Singh, Dr. Kamal Kapoor, Dr.ArunaTomar, Dr.PinkiChugh and

others were also present.

I. DETAILED REPORT:

With the support and keen interest shown by many Alumni by accepting the invitation to share their

experiences in continuing the tradition of organizing Alumni meets, we have successfully organized 1st

Virtual Alumni Meet of College of Engineering Roorkee, on the Theme "Internship Paradigm and

Professional Ethics" by COER Alumni Association. Several Alumni have participated and shared their

thoughts, expertise and experience to support the current students to undergo good internships during

graduation.

Meet started with the welcome address by Ms Nilima Patel, Coordinator Alumni Association, COER and

Host of the 1st Virtual Alumni Meet. She welcomed Director General, Professor SP Gupta, Dean Dr BM

Singh and All other dignitaries and Alumni along with the current students of various branches of

Engineering from COER. After this, Dr B M Singh welcomed the alumni and was delighted to see some of

his batch mates and juniors after so many years. Then, Director General, COER gave blessings by his

valuable words and was very keen to listen to the experiences of our alumni.

Mr Vikas Kalra, who is the Co-founder of Cetpa Infotech Pvt Limited with 16 years’ experience in trainings,

very well explained the importance of good Internships to the engineering students. He suggested latest

technologies like VHDL, Verilog, Image Processing as some of the areas in which students can do

internship. Mr Nitin Jain, Director Freelance discussed about the economy and compliance issues for

industry and work culture of industry which is very much helpful for students if they do internship in the

industry. He discussed about the professional ethics that the students need to learn to develop a

comprehensive personality. Mr Jatin Miglani from Ethans Technology, Pune emphasized on making deep

understanding on one technology which would help students to perform well in placement selection.

Mr Saurabh Chaurasia, IES presently working as Director, Ministry of Road Transport shared his

experiences on how he is helping many students from several years in getting internships in Government

Departments, particularly related to Civil Engineering. Mr Saurabh Kumar from Reliance Jio who was the

member of recruitment team in IITs, told that internship is one of the best ways to get selected in good

MNCs where intern can show his potential and has the chance to get job offer if he performs well during

internship. He emphasized on the importance of good professional ethics for making your mark in the

industries. Mr Bhavesh Panday, Alumni of EN branch shared information on internships available in power

corporations, NTCPC, BHEL and several others Industries.

Mr Shivank Mittal, working in JSW explained the importance of CAD skills for ME students. Mr Amarjeet

working in Metro Rail Corporation informed about the opportunities available in metro rail for interns

specially in construction and signals department. Mr Sumit Tyagi who is working in Accenture Technologies

and is also an entrepreneur stated that his startup is working in the area of Embed systems and making

solutions in Home Automation area. He pointed out that having a professional behaviour and conduct is as

important as having a good working aptitude. Mr Rajat Verma working in Paap Automation Noida, was very

much interested in referring the students to his known contacts to get good internship opportunities. Mr

Vishal Narula who earlier worked with Bask Research Foundation and now going for MPhil in Engineering

at the University of Cambridge suggested the students to work closely with the teachers and work on some

research-based project which would help them to get good internship opportunities and ultimately good

placement.

Mr Vimarsh Srivastva who is working in L & T presently and posted in DRDO for project work in Banglore,

said that he made many small electronic projects during his B.Tech at COER. Having a keen interest in core

electronics system design, he did not opt for an IT job. Instead, he started his job with a startup working in

core electronics field which helped him gain vast experience of working on real projects. Mr Shaharukh

Khan also suggested that for better skill enhancement, students should choose startups for internship where

they can learn many things from the basics of working in industries up to product design.

All alumni were of this opinion that students must develop deep understating of any one technology and

should start working on projects from the time of their graduation which would help them obtain necessary

experience about working in professional environment. They suggested that students should register on

platforms like Internshala, where they can receive many opportunities for internships.

Director General, COER gave his observations on the outcomes of the meet and was happy to see the

enthusiasm shown by all the participants.

Vote of Thanks was given by Mr B D Patel, HOD ET Department who thanked all alumni, current students,

all the dignitaries and faculty members for active participation. He also thanked Mr Varun Punjani, ME 2003

batch for joining the meet.

Dr B M Singh, and Heads of Department, Mr B D Patel (ET Department), Ms Anuradha (EN Department),
