SUMMARY

A geological mapping survey was undertaken on the MacDiarmid-1 property, Project 824-01. There are no outcrops within the property. One drill hole completed by Phelps Dodge in 1975 or 1976 provides the only data point within the property. Narrow pyrite and pyrrhotite zones at various contacts between andesitic tuffs and serpentinized peridotite were considered to be the cause of the EM-17 conductor.

Data points outside the property confirms the general geology to be a sequence of intercalated felsic to basic volcanic rocks and serpentinized peridotite.

INTRODUCTION

This report deals with a geological survey completed on claims P-498921 and P-500357 held by Amax Potash Limited as MacDiarmid-1 pro perty, Project 824-01. The claims were staked to cover four anomalies recorded in the Amax Input Mark VI A survey flown in May 1977. Claim P-498921 was staked prior to the Input survey.

LOCATION AND ACCESS

The property lies approximately 17 miles northwest of Timmins on the west side of the Mattagami River in MacDiarmid township. A ' winter road passes along the east boundary of the property but summer access is best achieved by helicopter service from Timmins {Figure 1). A landing pad was cut in the center of the property by previous workers,

TOPOGRAPHY AND RESOURCES

The topography of the property is flat and poorly drained. Mixed spruce and balsam cover most of the property but are generally small and densely intergrown. A-cedar swamp covers the southern part of the property.

No attempt has been made to harvest the timber within the pro perty.

PREVIOUS WORK

Observed in Field:

A picket line grid which was cut by Phelps Dodge in 1975 was found to cover the Amax property. A drill road crosses the property in an east-west direction from the winter road approximately 900 feet north of Amax post 2 of.claim P-498921. A clearing was found on the drill road in the center of claim P-500357 with a stack of approximately 350

feet of AQ size drill core. This drilling was completed by Phelps Dodge late in 1975 or early 1976, but was not filed for assessment credit.

An east-west cut line approximately 10 years old was noted approximately 300 feet south of the post l of claim P-500357.

Assessment Files: i

Phelps Dodge filed EM- 17 and magnetometer surveys in assessment file T-1475 which covered the Amax grid. Three separate conductors were defined in the H. E. M. survey and one was recommended as a drill target. The other two conductors extend off the property, and were - correlated with conductors drilled by previous workers. The target re commended for drilling had a flanking magnetic correlation.

Mistango River Mines (Lovejoy Option), assessment file T-906, filed V.E.M., H. E. M. and Mag surveys which covered the property and drill logs from holes drilled to test the extensions of the EM-17 con ductors defined by Phelps Dodge as discussed above.

SURVEY METHOD

Geological mapping was conducted by Amax personnel in July 1977 along the claim lines, the Phelps Dodge picket lines spaced 400 feet apart and fill-in pace and compass lines between the picket lines. Close control was maintained by using the picket lines and private Amax air photos numbered 77268-13, 16 and 17, which were taken by Cap ital Air Surveys Limited in May 1977. The field data were plotted on airphotos blown up to a scale of l inch to 400 feet.

GENERAL GEOLOGY

The property lies within the western part of the Abitibi Green stone Belt. The area is underlain by intercalated mafic and felsic volcanic rocks with associated volcanoclastic and clastic sedimentary

Page 7: REPORT ON GEOLOGICAL MAPPING SURVEY MATTAGAMI RIVER …€¦ · REPORT ON GEOLOGICAL MAPPING SURVEY MATTAGAMI RIVER CLAIMS MACDIARMID-1 PROJECT 824-01 RECEIVED MAY l l 1978 PROJECTS

rocks. Ultramafic flows and intrusions locally make up a significant portion of the stratigraphy. Numerous north-south trending diabase dykes and faults cross cut the stratigraphy which generally strikes between 1000 and 1400 in the area. The greenstone belt abuts against granitic basement rocks approximately 6 miles west of the property.

PROPERTY GEOLOGY

There are no outcrops within the property boundaries (see Map l, back pocket). One drill hole near the center of claim P-500357, inter sected a sequence of serpentinized ultramafic rocks interbedded with basic flows and tuffs. Thin sections of pyrrhotite near the contacts between basic and ultrabasic rocks were noted.

Interbedded rhyolite and andesite flows and tuffs with some serpentinized peridotite was intersected in drilling by Mistango Mines approximately 1,000 feet along strike from the property.

Outcrops of dacite flows interbedded with rhyolite flows and agglomerate occur approximately 800 feet across strike, southwest from the property.

Approximately 150 feet of clay and gravel overburden covers the bedrock within the property.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The Phelps Dodge drill hole satisfactorily explains the cause of the conductor defined in their EM-17 survey and the Amax Input survey.

The property lies within a geologically favourable environment and any further work will depend on the results of competitor activity in the area.

SUMMARY

A geological mapping survey was undertaken on the MacDiarmid-3 property, Project 824-03. There are no outcrops within the property. There are 7 drill holes within the property and 5 holes just outside the property. The northern half of the property is underlain by rhyolite flows and tuffs intercalated with basic flows and gabbro. The southern half of the property is underlain by mafic flows and graphitic mafic tuffs intercalated with lesser amounts of felsic flows and tuffs. Ap proximately east-west strikes are defined by V.E.M. conductor axes which correspond to graphitic tuff units at the south boundary of the property.

Geological interpretation of the magnetometer data is hampered by a magnetic diabase dyke which crosses the property and a small gabbroic body which was intersected in two drill holes.

LOCATION AND ACCESS

The property lies approximately 17 miles northwest of Timmins in MacDiarmid township, Figure 1. A good quality gravel road, which ex tends north to Abitibi Pulp and Paper's camp 40, forms the western bound ary of the property. This road extends northerly from camp 40 and joins Highway 11 approximately 14 miles west of Cochrane. The road deterio rates to a winter road south of the property and extends southerly ap proximately 18 miles to Timmins. The western two thirds of the property is crossed by "skidder roads" from recent logging operations.

TOPOGRAPHY AND RESOURCES

The topography of the property is generally flat and swampy. Virtually all of the marketable spruce was cut by Abitibi Pulp and Paper in 1976-77. The remaining timber consists of mixed spruce, balsam and cedar with local patches of poplar and alders.

PREVIOUS WORK

Observed in Field:

All evidence of previous work has been obliterated in the cut

over area. Map l (back pocket) shows the locations of old claim posts,

the picket line grid cut by Hollinger in 1971 and drill hole locations.

The drill hole locations in the cut over area are based on map locations

from previous workers.Several claim posts from Hollinger and Phelps Dodge work were

tied into survey pins by chaining because of inaccuracies in the claim

maps.

Other:

Newmont is reported to have covered the property with an I.R.

survey. No claims were staked by Newmont in the area following this sur

vey so presumably .no targets were defined.

Page 17: REPORT ON GEOLOGICAL MAPPING SURVEY MATTAGAMI RIVER …€¦ · REPORT ON GEOLOGICAL MAPPING SURVEY MATTAGAMI RIVER CLAIMS MACDIARMID-1 PROJECT 824-01 RECEIVED MAY l l 1978 PROJECTS

SURVEY METHOD

Geological mapping was conducted by Amax personnel at various times in May and June of 1977. All claim lines and fill-in lines spaced approximately 400 feet apart between the claim lines were traversed. All picket lines cut by Hollinger as shown on Map l were traversed. Close control was maintained by using the picket lines and private Amax air photos, numbered 77268-38 and 37. The field data were plotted on air photo 77268-38 which was blown up to a scale of l inch to 400 feet.

GENERAL GEOLOGY

The property lies within the western part of the Abitibi Green stone Belt. The area is underlain by intercalated mafic and felsic vol canic rocks with associated pyroclastics and sedimentary 'rocks of Archean age. The stratified rocks are cut by numerous north-south trending dia base dykes and major fault zones. The greenstone belt abuts against granitic gneiss basement rocks approximately 11 miles west of the pro perty.

PROPERTY GEOLOGY

There are no outcrops within the property boundaries (see Map l - back pocket). Geological information is based on drill hole data, ground magnetometer surveys and electromagnetic conductor axes.

The property is underlain by intercalated felsic and mafic volcanic rocks with associated tuffs and volcanoclastic sediments.

The northern half of the property is underlain by dominantly rhyolitic flow and pyroclastic rocks with thin interbedded andesitic units.

The south half of the property is underlain by dominantly andesitic pyroclastic rocks with associated graphitic and chloritic schists and virtually no felsic rocks.

Page 18: REPORT ON GEOLOGICAL MAPPING SURVEY MATTAGAMI RIVER …€¦ · REPORT ON GEOLOGICAL MAPPING SURVEY MATTAGAMI RIVER CLAIMS MACDIARMID-1 PROJECT 824-01 RECEIVED MAY l l 1978 PROJECTS

Felsic flows and tuffs with graphitic and sulphide-rich zones and lesser amounts of interbedded mafic schists underlie the ex treme south west corner of the property. This unit extends outside the property and is easily traceable as a VEM conductor.

The volcanic rocks strike from 900 to 1200 , as defined by the electromagnetic data, with numerous local variations expected. A mag netic diabase dyke crosses the property and strikes approximately 1550 . The magnetic expression of the dyke is offset by approximately 300 feet in claim P-499494, indicating probable local faulting.

A weaker magnetic trend parallel to the diabase dyke and ap proximately 2,200 feet to the west is less well defined. Gabbro was intersected in two holes drilled to test the strongest portion of this weaker magnetic feature.

CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

The northern half of the property which is underlain by dom- inantly felsic volcanic rocks is devoid of Input anomalies.

The strongest Input response on the property correlates with the graphite zone previously outlined by electromagnetic surveys and drilling at the south boundary of the property.

The property is located within a geologically favourable en vironment which is approximately five (5) miles along the regional strike from the Texasgulf ore body.

The property should be maintained in good standing pending results of ongoing exploration work in the area by Amax and competitor companies.
