Basis of report

An instruction was received to research the paternal and maternal ancestry of

[Name] in accordance with the indications at http://christinewibberley.co.uk/a-

starter-packages/ with a view to first constructing a family tree and preparing an

enhanced report.

The report should be read in conjunction with the accompanying family trees

For an explanation of some of the records used in this research please see

http://christinewibberley.co.uk/terms-of-business/some-frequently-asked-

questions/

Direct ancestors are shown in bold.

Unless otherwise indicated copies of original registers including Bishop’s

Transcripts were viewed digitally online at Ancestry.co.uk

Note on dates.

Where it has been possible to ascertain a precise date of birth from a birth

certificate, baptism record, 1939 register or a modern death registration the date

is given.

In other cases where a date has been given as ‘about’ it has usually been

calculated from a census entry and is approximate to within, usually a year, Ages

in censuses are not always accurate, enumerators made errors, not everyone

knew when they were born themselves, let alone when their parents and siblings

and even spouse were born.

Where index entries for a birth are given these are sometimes slightly speculative

and are a best time estimate based on the censuses and the place where the

person was born.

Where a likely death reference is given that is also based on an estimate as to

where and when the person might have died from the last census in which they

appeared and the age at death.

However the only sure way to establish a death is by the purchase of the

certificate although it is not then always clear that the certificate does or does not

relate to the subject.

In the case of marriages a GRO reference is given based upon the name of one

of the parties (usually the husband) and the results of a search based upon a

time when a couple would have been likely to have been married, usually within

two years before the birth of their first child and a date between them last living

as a single person and appearing as a married person in the next census.

Usually the bride’s identity becomes obvious from the index because the

forename of one of the brides on the relevant index page is the same as that of

the wife in the next census.

3

Sometimes with a common forename there may be more than one bride with that

name and the purchase of a certificate will be necessary. Sometimes assistance

is given by the censuses where a newly married couple live for a time with the

wife’s parents, or the wife’s elderly parent spent their final days with the family.

Clearly to purchase death birth and marriage certificates for every person in a

study would incur a significant amount. Fortunately this research was assisted by

the fact that most of the surnames are relatively unusual, the fact that many of

the Lancashire Parish Registers are available to view online and the recent

introduction of the new GRO indexes giving mother’s maiden surname for births

from 1837.

The census returns of England are deposited with the National Archives. Except

where stated the digitised copies were viewed at Ancestry.co.uk.

Note: Part of the 1851 census for Salford has been water damaged and never

filmed which may affect some of the findings in this report.

Possible explanations are:-

A miscounting or lapse of memory on the part of John Joseph who

completed the return.

A view taken by the parents that a child was born alive when in the opinion of

the midwife or attendant it was stillborn and registered as such.

A child having been born in an unexpected place, there are several children

surnamed BURGESS born away from the Salford/Manchester area in the

relevant period, mother’s maiden PRESTON.

An error in the birth indexes of the GRO.

Fourth Generation (Great Grandparents- Father’s mother’s line)

The parents of Mary Ann JONES 1884-1960 were Robert JONES 1862-likely 1928

and his first wife Mary Ann BEAVAN or BEVAN 1863-1886.

Robert and Mary Ann were married after banns on 7 August 1882 at St. Michael’s

Parish Church, Hulme, Manchester.

The groom, Robert JONES, a bachelor aged 20, a plumber of 11, Lavender Street,

[Hulme] was stated to be the son of Robert JONES, a plumber. The bride Mary Ann

BEVAN aged 19, a spinster, of the same address60 was stated to be the daughter of

Thomas BEVAN, a brass finisher.

The witnesses were two persons not obviously related to the bride and groom.61

Robert JONES 1862-likely 1928

Mary Ann’s father was, from censuses born in about 1862. He was despite the

indication to the contrary in 1871, born in Salford.

Robert was the son of Robert JONES abt.1827-likely 1884 and his wife Ann

HINDLE b. abt.1829.

He is certainly the child Robert JONES whose birth was registered in Salford in the

June quarter of 1862.62

60

They were not necessarily cohabiting at the time of the marriage but may have given the same address to save the cost of having banns called in different parishes. 61

13

He is virtually certain to be the child Robert, son of Robert and Ann JONES

baptised on 8 June 1862 at St. Bartholomew’s Church, Salford.63

Robert was enumerated in the census of 1871;64 Robert JONES aged 9, son of

head of the household a scholar. This census indicated he was born in Glossop,

Derbyshire, though in every other census he is indicated as having been born in

Salford and the birthplaces of the other persons in the household are correctly

stated.

The household in which he was enumerated was at 6, Tomlinson Place, Salford and

the other persons in it were:

Head: Robert JONES aged 45, a labourer born Salford.

Wife: Ann JONES aged 42, born Accrington.

Dau: Ellen JONES aged 19; work in Mill, born Salford.

Dau: Alice JONES aged 14, born Salford.

Dau: Hannah JONES aged 11, born Salford.65

Dau: Mary JONES aged 4, born Glossop.66

In the 188167 census Robert was enumerated Robert JONES, son of head of the

household, aged 18, a plumber born Salford, at 12, Edward Street, Salford.

The others in the household were:

Head: Robert JONES aged 54, a steam and ? pipe maker (partly obliterated by an

enumerator’s mark) born Salford.

Wife: Ann JONES aged 52, born Accrington.

Dau: Hannah JONES aged 21, a calico maker born Glossop.

Dau: Mary JONES aged 13, born Salford.

Son: George JONES aged 9, a scholar born Salford.

In fact the only family member born in Glossop was Hannah, Robert’s sister, whose

birth was registered in the Hayfield and Glossop Registration District in the

1871 England census ref. RG10; Piece: 4024; Folio: 148; Page: 40 65 In fact born in Glossop Derbyshire – see following footnotes 66 This again appears to be an error. In the 1881 Mary was enumerated as having been born in Salford and in the 1891 census (below) she was enumerated in her married name of DICKINSON within the household of her parents indicated as having been born in Salford. She is likely to have been the Mary JONES mother’s maiden surname HINDLE whose birth was registered in Salford in the September quarter of 1867, though a Mary Ellen JONES, mother’s maiden surname HINDLE had her birth registered in the March quarter of 1868 in Salford. That might be accounted for by the high incidence of the JONES surname. 67 1881 England census ref RG11; Piece: 3973; Folio: 112; Page: 14

September quarter of 1859. 68 This indicates a fairly brief stay by this family in

Derbyshire sometime between 185669 and 186170.

Following their marriage in 1882 Robert and Mary Ann JONES had two children,

Alice, born in 1882 and Mary Ann born in 1884 but in the June quarter of 1886 the

death of a Mary Ann JONES age at death 22 was registered in the Salford

Registration District.71

On 24 May 1888 Robert JONES, aged 26, a widower, a plumber of 10. Sorrell

Street, [Hulme], stated to be the son of Robert JONES, a labourer married Margaret

SWARBRICK, aged 21. a spinster of 16, Smithson Street, [Hulme], stated to be the

daughter of James SWARBRICK, deceased, a coachman.

The marriage was after banns at St. Michael’s, Hulme and witnesses were George

JONES and Jenny SWARBRICK, likely siblings of the parties.72 In 189173 Robert was enumerated Robert JONES aged 28, a plumber born Salford

as head of the household at 14, Braddon Street, Salford.

The other persons enumerated in the household were:

Wife: Margaret JONES aged 23, born Blackpool.

Dau: Alice JONES aged 8, born Salford.

Dau: Mary Jones aged 2, born Salford.

Dau: Lilly (sic) JONES aged 1, born Salford.

In 190174 he was enumerated Robert JONES, aged 39, a plumber, worker, born

Lancashire as head of the household at 16, Dennett Street, Blackley, Manchester.

The other persons in the household were:

Wife: Mgt. JONES aged 34, born Lancashire.

Dau: Alice JONES aged 18, a match maker, worker, born Lancashire.

Dau: Doris JONES aged 3, born Lancashire.

In 191175 Robert was enumerated as Robert JONES aged 48, a pipe fitter in the

cloth finishing industry, a worker born Salford; as head of the household at 95, Slack

Road, Blackley, Manchester.

The others in the household were:

Wife: Margaret JONES aged 43, born Blackpool.

Dau: Mary JONES aged 22, a packer in the biscuit industry, worker, born Salford.

Dau: Lily JONES aged 20, a packer in the biscuit industry, worker, born Salford.

Dau: Elizabeth JONES aged 18, a fitter in the match industry a worker born Salford.

Dau: Ada JONES aged 16, an assistant, pawnbroker, born Blackley.

Dau: Doris JONES aged 13, born Blackley.

Son: Robert JONES aged 10, born Blackley.

Son: Harold JONES aged 6, born Blackley.

Son: Leslie JONES aged 4, born Blackley.

Robert and Margaret JONES were stated to have been married 24 years and to

have had 10 children born alive 9 of whom were living at the time of the census.

95, Slack Road was stated to have six rooms.

Without the speculative purchase of several death certificates the date of death of

Robert cannot be ascertained. There is no person fitting his description enumerated

in 1939; the likelihood therefore being that he died before that date.

A likely death registration is that of a Robert JONES in the Manchester North

Registration District in the March quarter of 1928, age at death 66. There are

however other deaths of persons named Robert JONES of the correct age registered

1911-1939.

Mary Ann BEVAN 1863-1886

mother of Mary Ann JONES, was, from the censuses in which she was enumerated,

born in Manchester in about 1863. She is certainly the child Mary Ann, surname

indexed as BEVIN, mother’s maiden surname RIGBY whose birth was registered in

the June quarter of 1863 in Manchester.76

She was the daughter of Thomas Henry BEVAN 1839-1923 and his wife Ellen

RIGBY 1840-1919.

She does not appear to have been baptised in an Anglican ceremony although both

of her older siblings were; Eliza on 11 August 1861 at St. Andrews Manchester77 and

George on 1 April 1866 at St. Peter’s Liverpool.78

She was first enumerated in the census of 187179 as daughter of the head of the

household, Mary Ann BEVAN aged 7, born Manchester, at 6, London Road

Manchester.

The other persons in the household were:

Head: Thomas BEVAN aged 32, a brass finisher born Warrington.

Dau: Eliza BEVAN aged 10, born Manchester.

In 188180 she was enumerated Mary Ann BEVAN, daughter of head of the

Fifth Generation (Second Great Grandparents- Father’s father’s line)

The parents of John Joseph BURGESS 1862-1940 were John BURGESS b. abt

1829 and his wife Sarah BURGESS abt. 1833-1871

John and Sarah were married on 1 September 1850 at Manchester Collegiate

Church after banns.

The groom, John BURGESS, a bachelor aged 21, a porter of Union Street, Salford

was stated to be the son of Peter BURGESS, a porter.

The bride, Sarah BURGESS, aged 17, a spinster, also of Union Street, was stated

to be the daughter of William BURGESS, a goods manager.

The groom signed his name whist the bride made her mark.

The witnesses were two persons neither of whom were obviously related to bride or

groom.81

John BURGESS b about 1829- perhaps 1889

From his marriage record and subsequent census returns John Joseph’s father

John BURGESS was born in about 1829, and from censuses in Northwich,

Cheshire. From his marriage record his father was Peter, likely to have been born

around the turn of the 18/19 centuries.

Speculatively it was initially thought John may have been the John BURGESS

enumerated in 184182 in a household at Great Budworth, Northwich, age given as

15; that is aged between 15 and 19, born Cheshire.

The other persons in the household were:

Peter BURGESS age stated as 40, that is aged 40-44, a saddler born Cheshire.

Lydia BURGESS83 age stated as 50, that is aged 50-54 born Cheshire.

William BURGESS age stated as 15, that is aged 15-19, born Cheshire.

Nancy BURGESS84 age stated as 80, that is aged 80-84, born Cheshire

Elizabeth WARRELL age stated as 15, that is aged 15-19, a female servant born

Cheshire.

However in 1851, a year after John’s marriage in Manchester, Peter BURGESS

aged 53, a saddler employing 3 men born Winnington, Cheshire, wife Lydia aged

60, born Cowton, Cheshire with sons John 29, William aged 26 with various visitors,

servants and extended family were still living in Northwich.85

John’s first obvious appearance in a census was in that following his marriage in

185186 when he was enumerated in what appears at first to be a very oddly

constituted household at Union Street, Salford. He was stated to be John

BURGESS, the nephew of the head of the household, married aged 22, a Railway

Guard born Cheshire, Northwich. He was listed in the household after Elizabeth

BURGESS but before his own son, William Thomas BURGESS.

The household enumeration list is as follows:

Head: William BURGESS aged 38, a Foreman [unreadable] Railway Guard born

Northwich.

Wife: Hannah BURGESS aged 36, born Northwich.

Dau: Sarah BURGESS aged 17, married born Northwich.

Dau: Hannah BURGESS aged 7, a scholar born Salford.

Dau: Eliza BURGESS aged 3, born Salford.

Dau: Elizabeth BURGESS aged 5 months, born Salford.

Neph: John BURGESS aged 22, married, a Railway Guard born Northwich.

Son: William Thomas BURGESS aged 4 months, born Salford.

William Thomas BURGESS is readily identifiable as the son of John and Sarah

BURGESS rather than the son of William and Hannah.

Though there are modern instances of twins being born some time apart at

the time in question were twins not born together the likelihood of them both

and the mother surviving makes it extremely unlikely that Hannah could have

been the mother of both Elizabeth and William Thomas.

William Thomas BURGESS was enumerated in censuses of 1861 and 1871

with both his parents, John and Sarah (below).

84

Possible mother of Peter. 85

On 8 December 1850 William Thomas, son of John, a Railway Guard and

of birth being noted as 5 November 1850.87

William Thomas is certainly the child William Thomas BURGESS, mother’s

maiden surname BURGESS whose birth was registered in Salford in the

December quarter of 1850.88

This initially confusing census is interesting in that by giving the relationship between

John BURGESS and head of the household William BURGESS as nephew rather

than son in law it indicates that John and his wife Sarah BURGESS were likely first

cousins and their fathers brothers.

In 186189 he was enumerated John BURGESS aged 32, a Railway inspector born

Northwich as head of the household at 13, Wellmeadow Buildings, Regent Road,

Salford.

Also enumerated in the household were:

Wife: Sarah BURGESS aged 27, born Norwich.

Son: William T. BURGESS aged 10, a scholar born Salford.

Dau: Ellen BURGESS aged 5, a scholar born Salford.

Dau: Clara BURGESS aged 3, a scholar born Salford.

Son: Peter L. BURGESS aged 1, infant, born Salford.

In 1871 he was enumerated in the same household as his son John Joseph

BURGESS as head of the household at 76, Ordsall Lane Salford.

John BURGESS aged 42, a Railway inspector born Norwich.

In the September quarter of 1871 the death of a Sarah BURGESS aged 37 was

registered in the Salford Registration District90 and in 1881 John was enumerated,

again with son John Joseph, as a widower, John BURGESS aged 52, a Railway

Servant born Northwich, head of the household at 26, Wild Street, Salford.

The death of a John BURGESS, age at death 58, likely to be the subject person as

Sarah BURGESS 1833-1871

the mother of John Joseph BURGESS was the daughter of William BURGESS b.

abt 1813 and his wife Hannah LEICESTER or LESTER abt 1815-1871.

Sarah’s parents William BURGESS and Hannah LEICESTER were married in

Davenham Cheshire on 20 May 1833.92

Hannah can be identified from the birth index registration of Alice Julia BURGESS, a

sibling of Sarah BURGESS born in 1854, and the subject of a birth registration in the

March quarter of that year in Salford, mother’s maiden surname LESTER.93

From censuses Sarah was born in Northwich, Cheshire in about 1833, she may be

the child Sarah, daughter of William and Hannah BURGESS baptised at Witton

cum Twambrooks, Cheshire on 3 November 1833.94

In 1851 Sarah was enumerated as daughter of head of the household with her

parents William and Hannah and also with her husband John BURGESS and their

eldest son William Thomas.

Dau: Sarah BURGESS aged 17, married, born Northwich at 81, Union Street,

Salford.

In 1861 and 1871 she was enumerated with her husband John and their children.

1861: Wife: Sarah BURGESS aged 27, born Norwich at 13, Wellmeadow Buildings,

Regent Road, Salford.

1871: Wife: Sarah BURGESS aged 37, born Northwich at 76, Ordsall Lane, Salford.

As referenced above she died in 1871 and is certainly the Sarah BURGESS age at

death 37, of Ordsall Lane, Salford buried on 26 September 1871 at St. George’s

Hulme.95

The burial register gives an unusual amount of detail including the cause of death –

gastric fever, date of death 23 September and some marginal figures 1/15 which

may indicate a grave plot number.

together with 5 female unmarried lodgers all under the age of 30 and all employed in

the garment or fabric production industries.

John and Mary Ann were may have had another daughter, Ennis, the birth of an

Ennis WINTERBOTTOM mother’s maiden surname DICKENSON having been

registered in Manchester in the December quarter of 1849.105 She does not of

course appear in the 1851 census in the household of John and Mary Ann

WINTERBOTTOM, and there is no trace of her anywhere in 1851. There is no

record of her having died before 1851.

The death of a John WINTERBOTTOM, age at death 35, was registered in the

March quarter of 1855 in Manchester.106

In 1861 Mary Ann was enumerated at McDonald Street, Manchester, the home of

William PRESTON.

William PRESTON and Mary Ann DICKENSON had a child Ann WINTERBOTTOM

or PRESTON 1862-1941.

Robert JONES abt. 1827-1884.

was the son of Samuel JONES b .abt 1801 From his likely baptism entry his mother

was Ellen b. abt 1801.

Though the baptism entry gives his parents abode at the time of his baptism as

Manchester from censuses he was born in Salford.

He is likely to be the child Robert, son of Samuel, a dyer, and Ellen JONES of

Manchester baptised at Manchester Collegiate Church on 15 April 11827.109

He is also likely to be the Robert JONES, age given as 15, a cotton doffer, born

Lancashire enumerated in 1841110 in a household at North Street, Salford.

The other household members were:

Samuel JONES age stated as 40, a dyer born Lancashire.

Jane JONES aged 5, born Lancashire.

Mary JONES aged 3, born Lancashire.

Following his marriage Robert was enumerated in 1851111 at 1, Ryland Street, St

Simon’s Parish, likely Salford. This part of the 1851 census is so badly damaged by

water (part of the Salford census was uncopyable) that the Municipality cannot be

made out, nor can other details near the top of the page.

It is clear he was enumerated as head of the household, Robert JONES aged 21, a

cotton dyer born Salford.

Also in the household were:

Wife: Ann JONES aged 21, a weaver, born Accrington, Lancashire.

Son: Thomas JONES aged 4 months, born Salford.

Robert’s mother was the daughter of John HINDLE b. abt 1806 and his wife Ruth

child Ann, daughter of John, a printer and Ruth HINDLE of Higher Fold baptised at

Accrington Chapelry, parish of Altham on 15 November 1829. 116

In 1841117 she was enumerated Ann HINDLE age 11, born Lancashire in a

There is no trace of her in the 1901 census and there are two deaths for Ann JONEs

of her age registered in Salford 1891-1901, one of which is likely to be hers.118

Robert JONES and his wife Ann HINDLE had ascertainable children:

Thomas JONES b, 1851: Ellen JONES b. 1853: Alice JONES b. 1856: Hannah

JONES b. 1859: Robert JONES 1862-1928: Mary JONES b. 1868: George

JONESS b. 1872,

The parents of Mary Ann BEVAN 1863-1886 were Thomas Henry BEVAN 1839-

1923 and his wife Ellen RIGBY 1840-1919.

Thomas and Ellen were married on 23 June 1860 at St. Andrew’s Church, Ancoats,

Manchester Church after banns.

The groom, Thomas Henry BEVAN, a bachelor, gave his age as 21 and his

occupation as a brass finisher, He was stated to be of 3, what appears to be Print

Street, the son of George BEVAN, a mason.

The bride, Ellen RIGBY, a spinster gave her age as 20, occupation strapper and her

abode as the same as that of the groom. Her father was stated as Townley RIGBY

a dyer.

The groom signed his name whilst the bride made her mark. Witnesses were two

persons not obviously related to either party.119

Thomas Henry BEVAN 1839-1923

Mary Ann’s father, was the son of George (Henry) BEVAN b. abt 1802-1853 and

his wife Mary (Ann) EVANS b. abt. 1802

From censuses he was born in Latchford (in Warrington), Cheshire in about 1839

and is certainly the child Thomas Henry BEVAN, mother’s maiden surname EVANS

whose birth was registered in the Runcorn Registration District in the March quarter

of 1839.120

From the record of his adult baptism (below) he was born on 8 February 1839.

Thomas was certainly the Thomas BEVAN aged 2, born Cheshire, enumerated in a

household at Old Road Grappenhall in 1841.121

George BEVAN age given as 15, a mason’s lab. born Cheshire.

John BEVAN aged 14, born Cheshire.

Ellen BEVAN aged 10, born Cheshire.

Maria BEVAN aged 9, born outside Cheshire.

Eliza BEVAN aged 7, born outside Cheshire.

James BEVAN aged 4 months, born Cheshire.

In 1851122 Thomas was enumerated as the son of the household aged 12, a scholar

Son: John BEVAN aged 23, a shoemaker born Cheshire.

Soon after 1851 the family moved to Manchester where Thomas’ father, George

died in 1853.123

Following his marriage in 1860 Thomas was enumerated in 1861124 as son of head

of the household at what is, from the census, fairly clearly 3, Print Street,

Manchester; Thomas BEVAN a married brass finisher aged 22, born Warrington.

The other persons in the household were:

Head: Mary BEVAN aged 61, a widow born Chester.

Son: George BEVAN unmarried, aged 32, a stonemason born Warrington.

Head: Thomas BEVAN aged 32, a brass finisher born Warrington

in the same household as his daughter Mary Ann.

On 14 June 1871 Thomas Henry born 8 February 1839, son of George Henry and

Mary Ann BEVAN was baptised at St.Saviour’s Church Chorlton upon Medlock.

Whilst he has an additional forename (which may have been a name taken on

baptism) and his parents appear to have acquired an extra forename each this is

clearly the subject person. The address given, likely to have been in part for him

rather than his mother, was London Street, Altrincham, London Road and the

occupation, which is certainly his rather than his father’s, was brass finisher.125

In 1881 Thomas was again enumerated as head of the household, then at 20,

Armitage Road, Salford in the same household as his daughter, Mary Ann.

Head: Thomas BEVAN aged 43, a brass finisher born Warrington.

In 1891 he was enumerated as head of the household at 21, St. James’ Street

Salford, in the same household as his granddaughter Mary Ann JONES, child of his

deceased daughter, Mary Ann.

Head: Thomas BEAVAN aged 52, a brass finisher born Warrington.

Again in 1901 his granddaughter Mary Ann JONES was living with the family and

Thomas was enumerated as head of that household at 21, St. James Street.

Head: Thomas Hy. BEVAN aged 62, a brass finisher, worker,126 born Warrington.

In 1911127 Thomas was enumerated as head of the household at a four roomed

property, 52, Nashville Street, Salford; Thomas Henry BEVAN aged 72, a brass

finisher, at Lancashire Dynamo works, a worker, born Warrington.

The only other person in the household was his wife, Ellen BEVAN aged 71, born

Manchester.

Thomas and Ellen were stated to have been married 50 years and to have had 10

children born alive of whom 8 had died and two were then living.

The death of Thomas Henry BEVAN age at death 84 was registered in the Chorlton

on Medlock Registration District in the December quarter of 1923.128

Ellen RIGBY 1840-1919

the mother of Mary Ann BEVAN was the daughter of Townley RIGBY abt 1820-

1864 and his wife Catherine TRAINOR b. abt 1818.

From censuses Ellen was born in Manchester in about 1840 and is certainly the child

Ellen RIGBY whose birth was registered in Manchester in the March quarter

of1840.129

Her parents had been married on 22 October 1838, when both were under age, at

St. Mary’s Church, Manchester though the register does not say whether after banns

or by licence. Their names were rendered as Townley RIGBY and Catherine

TRAYNOR and both were able to sign their names.130

Ellen was enumerated in 1841131 in a household at Pump Street, Manchester, Ellen

RIGBY aged 1 born Lancashire.

In this census in the absence of specific addresses it is hard to tell where one

household ends and the next begins. However it is likely that the household

comprised:

Edward TREANOR age given as 60, a weaver born Ireland.

Catherine TREANOR age given as 60, a hawker born Ireland.

Ellen TREANOR age given as 15, born Lancashire.

Townley RIGBY age given as 20, a dyer born Lancashire.

Catherine RIGBY age given as 20, cotton mill born Lancashire.

Given that at her marriage Ellen’s mother, Catherine had given her father’s name as

Edward TRAINOR a spirit merchant Edward and Catherine TREANOR

enumerated here are likely to have been her parents.

In 1851132 Ellen was enumerated Ellen RIGBY as granddaughter of head of the

household aged 11, Factory, born Manchester at 18, St Andrews Street,

Manchester.

Suggestions for further research

As with most family studies this research would be enhanced by the purchase of

further certificates of birth marriage and death.

John Joseph BURGESS 1862-1940 made a will.

Wills are frequently a rich source of family information. The three wills above can be

purchased at a cost of £10 each. Any extra fee would depend on time taken in

analysis.

Several ancestral lines in this study are capable of being taken back one or more

generations using online records.

Whilst results for research before about 1837-1841 is slightly more speculative than

that afterwards, due to lack of identifiers in the records, research can often be carried

out with an acceptable degree of certainty.

Indications are that the following lines might be taken back further:-

PEARSON: HARWOOD, RIGBY.

though research, till carried out and confirmed, is always speculative.
