Dear Friends, Welcome to the Summer 2016 edition of Wood Hudson’s semi-annual publication, Report. This summer will again prove to be a busy one as we welcome 12 students to our Undergraduate Research Education Program. For the past 34 years, Wood Hudson’s internship program has been a fantastic springboard for students who have aspirations of becoming scientists or physicians. This paid internship program provides a unique opportunity for students to work alongside our scientists and physicians performing biomedical research. Since the program started, over 280 students have participated; representing a cross section of over 34 universities or colleges. A majority of our UREP alums have returned to the Tri-State area to work at well renowned healthcare institutes: St. Elizabeth, Christ Hospital, UC Health, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and Good Samaritan Hospital just to name a few. This year continues to be very productive as our recent manuscript on our studies of malignant melanoma was published in the British Journal of Cancer and a project on gastric cancer was published in Cancer Research, the journal of the American Association for Cancer Research. Dr. Douglass and I presented a poster on our recent breast cancer research at the Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research. As you know, peer-reviewed publications are the linchpin of medical progress. Wood Hudson’s association with a major pharmaceutical company has also helped us identify new targets for cancer therapy and helped bring into clinical trials new drugs for cancer treatment. However, for all its successes the lab understands it must remain at the forefront in cutting edge technology to best serve the community. Back in February, we entered into a new realm of cancer research by applying for, and receiving approval from, the Institutional Review Board at St. Elizabeth Healthcare to study clinical samples from patients with cancer for study in laboratory cell culture. We plan to do this study by establishing a Living Bio-bank Laboratory. Unlike our current Biospecimen Repository that preserves tissue through paraffin wax, this Living Bio-bank allows study of unfixed tissues surgically removed and gives scientists the chance to study cancer cells as they propagate. This joint collaboration with Dana-Farber Cancer Research Institute in Boston, MA, will pave the way for us to study the sensitivity of specific tumors to specific chemotherapies, thereby contributing to new knowledge on personalized chemotherapeutic treatments for patients. Our annual appeal fundraiser is devoted toward establishing this Bio-bank and two new laboratories. For more information on our annual appeal and how you can help us in this new venture, please see page 3. Dr. Bonnie Richmond, who recently rejoined the lab is helping me write two grants, one for a study to identify markers for prognosis and treatment response in metastatic breast cancer while the other is on bladder cancer. Data analysis of our ovarian cancer studies is well underway with data from nearly 200 patients being evaluated. And finally, our fundraising efforts are in full swing as we once again partnered with the Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon back in May, and on August 6 with the Ft. Thomas Corvette Club that will host their Annual Car Show. We could never do what we do without all of our dedicated supporters who graciously give us time, talents, and treasures so we can carry out our mission of discovering new knowledge regarding the causes, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer. My very best to you throughout the summer. Sincerely,
Julia Carter, Ph.D.President & Chairperson

• More than 8 out of 10 American voters favor using taxpayer dollars to fund medical research.
• Nearly 3 out of 4 voters favor increased federal funding for cancer research.
• More than 5 in 6 voters recognize that progress is being made against cancer.
• Among diseases and other major health issues, voters in all age groups are most worried about getting cancer.
• Nearly 9 in 10 Americans know someone who has had cancer almost half have a close friend or family member who currently has cancer.
* Statistics from Amer. Assoc. for Cancer Research, 5th Annual Cancer Progress Report
So far in 2016, Wood Hudson has had three long-term research projects published or presented. The projects date back to 2012 or earlier and it is very satisfying to see them “in print.” In February a paper on our melanoma research was published in the British Journal of Cancer – the publication of Cancer Research UK. The paper entitled “Phospyorylation of eIF4E serine 209 is associated with tumor progression and reduced survival in malignant melanoma” went online ahead of print February 4th and was released in print form later in February. It represented a collaboration between scientists from Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory who worked with Dr. James Deddens, University of Cincinnati; Dr. Reed Spaulding, University of Louisville; Dr. Jackson Pemberton, St. Elizabeth Healthcare; and Dr. Jeremy Graff, Biothera Pharmaceutical, Inc. Two of the former UREP students named as co-authors are now in medical school, Jordan Jones at the University of Louisville and Thomas “Grant” Lewis at the University of Pikeville. The second full length publication was in May in Cancer Research, a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR). This publication entitled “Stromal-Based Signatures for the Classification of Gastric Cancer” represented the combined work of 31 scientists, led by scientists from Eli Lilly Research Laboratories located in Indianapolis and New York. Other scientists involved in the research came from General Electric Global Research Center, Samsung Medical Center (Korea), Harvard Medical School, and Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory. Our last research report was an abstract accepted for presentation at the 2016 Annual Meeting of the AACR and published in April in the Proceedings of the American Association for Cancer Research (and pictured on this page).
Pictured L to R: Dr. Taiping Chen, a former Wood Hudson Senior Scientist, Dr. Julia Carter and Dr. Larry Douglass at
the poster presented at the AACR meeting.
Research reported by Wood Hudson in a poster session at this year’s AACR meeting inspired great interest.
On April 16 to 20, the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) held its 107th Annual Meeting in New Orleans. The AACR consists of some 36,000 researchers from all over the world and the annual meeting this year gave well over 19,000 of them the opportunity to share their ideas on how to combat cancer. Wood Hudson has for some time been intrigued by the important role that substances called translation factors play in both normal cells and in cancer cells. These translation factors, especially the two known as 4E and p4E, when present in increased amounts can cause breast cancers to appear and, after having appeared, to advance to late stage cancers. Our evidence that 4E and p4E are important drivers of breast cancer development and progression offers a specific target for the development of specific anticancer drugs.
Report ◆ 2 ◆ woodhudson.org
Wood Hudson's quest to advance in cancer research discoveries has led us to reach out to
other collaborative partners in our work toward the conquest of cancer through research.
Recently we received Institutional Review Board approval from St. Elizabeth Healthcare for a collaboration with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, MA, to study clinical samples from cancer patients for a laboratory cell culture study. This approval paves the way for Wood Hudson to establish a Living Bio-bank.
Unlike our current Bio-specimen Repository that preserves tissue through paraffin wax, this Living Bio-bank allows study of unfixed tissues surgically removed at St. Elizabeth Healthcare and gives scientists the chance to study cancer cells as they propagate. We will have the ability to study the sensitivity of specific tumors to specific chemotherapies, thereby contributing to the personalized chemotherapeutic treatments for patients. Our annual appeal this year will help renovate two laboratories on the first floor of our facility, establish a Living Bio-bank, and help to purchase a cryogenics freezer. Estimated cost for this project is expected to reach $50,000. This project falls in line with our 2015-2018 Strategic Plan. Wood Hudson is extremely fortunate to have Trustee, Mark Shields, serve as project manager for these renovations. Back in 2011, Mark was very instrumental in the planning and overseeing the building of the Repository. Besides his involvement on the Board, Mark also takes an astute leadership role in helping at fundraisers, being an active spokesperson for UREP, and securing financial support from others in the community.
To our loyal and dedicated supporters, we are calling on you to help us in funding this project. We will not be able to forge ahead in renovating the Living Bio-bank laboratories or securing the cryogenic freezer without your support. Please take a moment to complete the enclosed envelope and mail your annual appeal donation today!
We are very excited about starting this next venture in cancer research. Please consider giving a gift to this annual appeal. Together we will work toward the conquest of cancer through research.

Wood Hudson’s Undergraduate Research Education Program offers undergraduate students the excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience by working one-on-one with our scientists and research assistants doing bio-medical research. Over the past 34 years, 280 students representing 34 universities and colleges have participated in the program.
Students often write to us how beneficial the program was in helping them gain entrance into graduate or medical schools.
In order to meet the annual budget of over $298,000 it costs Wood Hudson to operate the UREP program, a scholarship endowment fund was established in 1997 to help defray expenses associated with student salaries, benefits, program supplies, and partial mentors salaries. As with any growing program, our operating expenses are increasing and more students are seeking entrance into the program.
We invite you to invest in the future of these upcoming scientists or physicians by giving to this Scholarship Endowment Fund. For more information on the Scholarship Endowment Fund contact Dr. Julia Carter at 859-581-7249 or email her at [email protected].
Dear Dr. Carter, I would like to take the time to thank you for the time I spent at Wood Hudson Cancer Research Lab. The time I spent there, with the other students & doctors was irreplaceable and unlike any other experience I could have received at any other lab. Not only have I gained laboratory skills and honed in on my ability to think critically, but I have also swelled in knowledge, confidence, and humility. The education I received at Wood Hudson has put me ahead of my classmates at the University in the sciences and humanities. The knowledge and understanding I have gained while working for you are invaluable . Sincerely,

Since 1982 Wood Hudson has offered an Undergraduate Research Education Program to help college students achieve their dream of someday becoming a scientist, physician, or medical professional. This vibrant, enriching, and engaging internship offers students the unique opportunity to work alongside our scientists doing hands-on biomedical research. Students who interned at Wood Hudson often write to tell us how much they gained valuable experience which helped them in their academic studies. Over 280 students from 34 universities and colleges have participated in our program over the years. The success of UREP can be measured by the success of our alumni who gain admission into graduate and medical schools, by the scientific papers they publish, and scientific reports they present. A majority of our UREP alums have returned back to the Tri-State area to work at several well renowned healthcare institutes: St. Elizabeth, Christ Hospital, UC Health, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, and Good Samaritan Hospital just to name a few.
Were you a student at one time in our Undergraduate Research Education Program or do you know of someone who was? We are currently putting together a UREP alumni directory that will showcase our alumnus and to have a UREP reunion in January of 2017 to mark the 35th anniversary of the program.

Since 2010, Wood Hudson Cancer Research Laboratory has participated in the Scripps Howard Communication Internship Program. This program gives college students majoring in either communications, public relations or journalism the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a non-profit organization while getting paid and receiving college credit. The purpose is for students to gain valuable work experience that will help jump start their career upon graduation. The program, open to students from the University of Cincinnati, Xavier University and Northern Kentucky University, has been operating since 2002.
This year Wood Hudson was fortunate to have Zach Baker, a senior at Xavier University, join us in the Communication Department. Zach proved to be a very beneficial intern for Wood Hudson performing a variety of administrative, communication and special event functions.
Zach helped with our 35th Anniversary Celebration Event, Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon, the upcoming 16th Annual Classic Car Show and Silent Auction Fundraiser, along with other communication and development projects.
“The Scripps Howard Internship Program was a wonderful way for me to gain valuable work experience that will certainly help me in securing a job after graduation,” said Baker. He went on to say “I certainly improved on my organizational and project management skills. I feel more confident now going into any communication department and taking on projects or special event fundraisers.“
Wood Hudson wishes to thank Scripps Howard Foundation for helping us in our fundraising and communication endeavors through this internship program.

Working Towards the Conquest of Cancer Through Research
invesT in discovery
To preserve the memory of a loved one, to express gratitude, to show humanitarian concern, to support research education--- these are some reasons people contribute to a charitable organization. Let us know you wish to make Wood Hudson a part of your legacy of supporting cancer research. Please consider the following ways you can help ensure we continue our work toward the conquest of cancer through research.
A planned gift to Wood Hudson will ensure continuation of fundamental cancer research and scholarships for aspiring students. Contact Julie Althaver at 859-581-7249 or [email protected] to discuss your interest as you plan your philanthropy.
Cash Gift- simplest gift and provides immediate benefits to Wood Hudson.
Appreciated Securities- if your long-term securities holdings have appreciated value, you may have an opportunity to avoid capital-gain tax that would be applied to the appreciation when the securities are sold. You may also earn a charitable income-tax deduction for the full market value of the securities.
Life-Income Plans- you make a gift of cash or property (stocks, bonds, real estate) in exchange for a steady stream of income for life: You transfer an asset but reserve the right to receive payments. Life-income gifts may be made in the form of trusts or gift annuities.
Gift Annuities- simplest and most popular charitable life-income plan. For as little as $10,000, a gift annuity is a contract between you and Wood Hudson. In exchange for a gift of cash or marketable securities, fixed payments are guaranteed to the beneficiary(ies) for life.
Bequests- you can make a bequest to support UREP scholarships and research. A bequest can be through life insurance, retirement plan or IRA, revocable and irrevocable trusts- even government saving bonds.
Other Planned Gifts- Real Estate, Tangible Personal Property, and life insurance.
