COMPETITIONIf my magazine were real, my main competitions would be Kerrang, Rock and NME. This is because thy share the same conventions, target audience and overall aim I wish to create with my magazine. I believe to attract a large audience like these magazines do I need to include on my cover a main key signifier, specifically the lead singer of a band, and use a brighter lighting to let them stand out against a darker background. I need to include a wide range of sub articles consisting of many different bands, mainly older rock bands to sell toward my target audience of over people of any gender, that range from 16+. I need to use cool colours such as blues and greens for the background so the more warmer colours like red, orange and yellow pop out. I can also include some sort of free gift as all they can mostly offer are posters. I would possibly offer a competition, free CDs or guitar picks as most people who read this will play an instrument.

INSTITUTIONThe publisher I have chosen to go with it TeamRock. They are the company that distribute the magazine Classic Rock. I have chosen this company because they don’t just publish the classic rock magazine they also publish a metal magazine called “Metal Hammer” meaning they not only appeal to one audience but a wider range of people who are still fans of the ever growing genre of death metal. The company have been publishing since 1983 meaning they have almost 30 years of experience and will be highly skilled in knowing what they're doing in terms of appealing to the target audience.

GENERIC CONVENTIONSThe generic conventions of these magazines is they usually only have one key signifier, usually a mid close up or an extreme close up shot of the lead singer or a solo artist and use monochrome colour schemes usually with one or two brighter colours to make certain things stand out. For example the cover to the right with “FLORENCE” on it has the key signifiers hair a bright red whereas everything else is a more simple colour scheme. Another convention is there are a lot of sub articles and cover lines of other bands in a smaller thinner font. This stands out against the more bold and loud cover lines meaning people will approach it to read what other bands are featured. Most use a colour scheme that is shying away from cooler colours; choosing a selection of colours that are warmer, such as reds and yellows and then contrast that with monochrome colours like whites and blacks.
