John Carpenter

•An American film director, producer, actor, screenwriter, composer

commonly associated with horror and science fiction movies.

•Began filming horror shorts on 8 mm film even before entering high school.

•His films are characterized by minimalist lighting and photography, static cameras, use of steadicam, and distinctive synthesized scores -usually

self-composed.

•One of his most successful horror movies is Halloween (1978)

•Halloween (1978) is an American independent horror film directed by John Carpenter.

•It was a smash hit on release and helped give birth to the slasher film genre.

• Was produced on a budget of $320,000 and grossed $60 million at the box office in the United States becoming one of

the most profitable independent films

•Carpenter relied upon taut suspense rather than the excessive gore that would define later slasher films.

•Carpenter's self-composed "Halloween Theme" remains a recognizable film music theme to this day.

•Broke into film as a sound editor for Sean Cunningham.

•His work tends to share a common exploration of the nature of reality, For example ‘A Nightmare On Elm

Street’ dealt with the consequences of dreams in real life.

•‘Scream’ (1996) is one of a series of horror movies directed by Wes Carven that involves a psychopathic serial killer wearing a Halloween costume attempting to kill Sidney

Prescott and various other characters involved in her life.

•It revitalized the slasher film genre in the mid 1990s by using a standard concept with a tongue-in-cheek approach

that successfully combined straightforward scares with dialogue that satirized slasher film conventions and was

highly acclaimed by many critics worldwide, who appreciated the approach..

•Was a smash hit, earning over $100 million domestically and spawning two popular sequels, which Craven also

directed.
