WELCOME MESSAGE On behalf of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa, we are pleased to welcome you to the October Psychiatry Resident Scholar Half-Day! We are fortunate to have the opportunity to come together and spend the afternoon focusing on this aspect of the work that we do each day, and to learn from the residents and staff who will present details of completed research and scholarly projects. This Fall, four residents will be presenting their scholarly work. After the presentations, all attendees will get involved in workshop and small group sessions that focus on building skills and collaborating in the scholar role. SPEAKER PROFILES

Dr. Simon Hatcher, Vice Chair of Research, Department of Psychiatry, University of Ottawa is currently a Full Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa having moved there from Auckland in May 2012. He worked for 18 years in Auckland, New Zealand as a clinical academic running a Liaison Psychiatry in a general hospital and at the Department of Psychological Medicine at the University of Auckland. His main research interests include suicide, self-harm, psychotherapies, psychiatry in the general hospital setting and e-therapies. He provided the clinical input into the John Kirwan Journal program www.depression.org.nz. Currently, he is based clinically at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre where he is working in an anxiety disorders clinic and providing services in the downtown homeless shelters. Academically he is based at the University of Ottawa’s Institute of Mental Health Research where he is the vice chair of research in the Department of Psychiatry.

Research Interests: Suicide, intentional self-harm, suicide prevention strategies, e-therapies, non-pharmacological interventions in individuals who present to hospital with intentional self-harm, mental health of vulnerable groups including Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Queer or Questioning (LGBTQ) youth and homeless populations; psychotherapies, and psychiatry in general hospital settings.

Dr. Timothy Lau is currently the Director of Postgraduate Education for the Department of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine. He is the Chair of a national group of undergraduate psychiatric educators for the 17 medical schools (www.coupweb.ca). Dr. Lau is a graduate of the University of Ottawa Medical school and completed his residency in psychiatry and fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa. He is on the examination board for psychiatry at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has won numerous departmental undergraduate and postgraduate awards for recognition of teaching and advocacy. He has an interest in spirituality and bioethics and is the founder and Past President of the Canadian Federation of Catholic Physicians' Societies (canadiancatholicphysicians.com)(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3CTY2PJsCM). He is an advocate for mental health and is sought after speaker in the area of Happiness (http://www.theroyal.ca/en/tete-a-tete/in-the-pursuit-of-happiness/) for which he has given talks across the country. As a father of 6 and husband, he helps organize and lead parenting courses and conferences as part of the International Federation for Family Development (http://www.iffd.org/en/).

Research Interests: ECT, catatonia, geriatric psychiatry and scholarly educational projects.

Dr. Andrea Stewart is the Associate Program Director of Postgraduate Education for the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa in the Faculty of Medicine and is also the Site Education Director at the Hôpital Montfort for Geriatric Psychiatry. She received her doctorate in medicine from McMaster University and completed her specialization in geriatric psychiatry at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. Dr. Stewart is an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa. Her research interests focus on risk management in mental health services, mainly risks related to suicide and violence, with a focus on the elderly. In the next three years, she will be a part of a project that will help clinical teams to standardize mental health risk management and thus improve the safety and quality of care.

Research Interests: Risk management, mental health, continuous training, suicide and violence, and elderly populations.

Dr. Michael Cheng is a proud graduate of the uOttawa Psychiatry Program, and currently works as a child and family psychiatrist at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario. He is the co-founder of eMentalHealth.ca, an initiative of CHEO, which provides information about mental health help and information to families and professionals. Dr. Cheng is passionate about child and youth mental health, and his interests range from resiliency factors like strong parent-child attachments to mental health literacy (through projects such as eMentalHealth.ca). As a parent with a young family, Dr. Cheng is passionate about child and youth mental health. He strongly believes that it is important to look after our young, because one day, they will be the ones looking after us.

Research Interests: The importance of attachments to fellow human beings for resiliency and mental health, and how attachments are threatened by modern society and technology; using the internet to improve mental health literacy through websites such as: www.eMentalHealth.ca and www.eMentalHealth.ca/PrimaryCare.

Dr. Alan Douglass is the Medical Director of the Sleep Disorders Service of the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre, which includes both a sleep disorders clinic and a research component. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Sleep Medicine. Dr. Douglass is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ottawa, and also lectures in the Faculty of Social Sciences (Psychology) on the subject of sleep and dream research. He has published over 30 articles relating to psychiatric illness, sleep disorders medicine, and conditions where the two can be confused such as narcolepsy, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. He is the lead author of the Sleep Disorders Questionnaire, which is used internationally in six languages.

Research Interests: Clinical neuroscience of REM sleep, rapid eye movement physiology, and its relationship to mental disorders.

Dr. Doug Green is a psychiatrist with a clinical focus on outpatient psychiatric patient care and shared care. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Ottawa and has a cross-appointment to the Department of Family Medicine at the same institution. He is also a Clinical Director of the Shared Mental Health Program at The Ottawa Hospital. His main interest is in working with family physicians to assist them in managing their patients with psychiatric illness. In collaboration with Dr. Asmat Khan, he has developed an algorithm to aid in the management of depression in the primary care setting. This algorithm contains within it an approach to using antidepressants in a systematic and evidence-based fashion.

Research Interests: Understanding the factors which contribute to the uptake of mental health innovations in the primary care setting, as well as the barriers to their acceptance; Attachment theory and its applicability to understanding the adaptation to serious illness.

Dr. Robert Milin has completed dual fellowships in Child and Adolescent, and Addiction Psychiatry. He currently holds the position of Head of the Division of Addiction & Mental Health and Associate Professor, Department of Psychiatry, University of Ottawa. As a clinician he is the Director of the Adolescent Day Treatment Unit, Youth Psychiatry Program at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre and was the Founding Clinical Director of the Youth Program. He also serves as the Consulting and Advisory Psychiatrist to the Dave Smith Youth Treatment Centre, a provincial centre for residential youth addiction treatment. Dr. Milin is a Clinical Scientist with the University of Ottawa, Institute of Mental Health Research and maintains an active research profile. In 2011, Dr. Milin received the honour of being named a “Master Clinician” by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in recognition for his outstanding work in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. Amongst various national and international professional academy duties he serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry.

Research Interests: adolescent substance use disorders, early onset major psychiatric disorders in youth and youth mental health awareness/stigma.

Dr. Michael Seto is the Director of the University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research’s Forensic Research Unit, as well as the Director of Forensic Rehabilitation Research in the Integrated Forensic Program of the Royal Ottawa Health Care Group. He is cross-appointed to four universities in Ontario: the University of Toronto, Ryerson University, Carleton University and the University of Ottawa. He currently supervises graduate students at Ryerson, Carleton, and the University of Ottawa. His research has been funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Ontario Mental Health Foundation, Correctional Services Canada and the Mental Health Commission of Canada.

Research Interests: Pedophilia, forensic program evaluation, sexual offending, and mentally disordered offenders.

Dr. George Tasca is the Research Director of the Centre for Eating Disorders Research. Dr. Tasca is a registered psychologist and clinician researcher at the Regional Centre for the Treatment of Eating Disorders at The Ottawa Hospital. He is also an Associate Professor in Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine, a Clinical Professor in the School of Psychology, and has an appointment with the Faculty of Graduate and Post-Doctoral Studies at the University of Ottawa. He has a research appointment in Psychology at Carleton University, and is affiliated to the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and the University of Ottawa Institute for Mental Health Research. Dr. Tasca is the Research Chair in Psychotherapy Research at the University of Ottawa and the Ottawa Hospital. He is the fellow of the Canadian Group Psychotherapy Association, and he sits on several journal editorial boards.

Research Interests: Attachment theory, psychotherapy process and outcome, group psychotherapy, binge eating disorder, psychometrics, and the application of multilevel models to group treatment research.

Dr. Jeff Douziech is a PGY5 resident in psychiatry. He completed his BSc and MD at the University of Alberta. He will be pursuing a career in general psychiatry in Kelowna BC following the completion of his residency training.

Research Interests: Clinical work and medical education.

Dr. Milena Rogan is a PGY5 resident in psychiatry. Dr. Milena Rogan graduated with an MD degree in January 2011 from the International Medical School, Charlestown, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Medical University of the Americas (Nevis). She is interested in geriatric psychiatry. She is currently completing an elective rotation at the Elisabeth Bruyère Hospital in the Memory Disorders Clinic.

Dr. Melanie Strike is a 4th year resident who is currently doing her Consult Liaison rotation at the Montfort hospital. She is from Carsonby, Ontario and completed her degrees in Medicine and Honours Biology, with Specialization in Animal Physiology, at the University of Ottawa. She has been in the Research Stream since starting residency and has enjoyed her involvement in projects in the areas of eating disorders, child psychiatry, substance use disorders and medical education. She recently became involved in research in the areas of sleep psychiatry and the interplay between circadian disturbances and mood disorders. After she graduates in 2017, she plans to practice general psychiatry in Ottawa and maintain involvement in clinical research.

Research Interests: Eating disorders, child psychiatry, substance use disorders, medical education, and sleep psychiatry.

Dr. Meshal Sultan is a fifth year psychiatry resident at University of Ottawa. He completed 6 years of medical school at United Arab Emirates University in Al Ain, UAE. He then did 2 years of psychiatry residency training at Dubai Health Authority, Dubai, UAE, before joining the psychiatry residency program at University of Ottawa. Dr. Sultan completed multiple rotations at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, including the Mood and Anxiety Clinic, Mental Health Inpatients Unit, and the Urgent Care Clinic. He is currently enrolled in the child and adolescent psychiatry subspecialty training program at University of Ottawa.

Research Interests: Psychopharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatments of depressive disorders in children and adolescents.
