A new place to call home.

Residential Aged Care

Uniting Edinglassie Emu Plains

Page 2: Residential Aged Care

Our newly redeveloped aged care home continues a legacy of caring since 1863, when the historic chapel on this site began serving the rural community of Emu Plains.

Uniting Edinglassie Emu Plains is purpose-built to care for older people, including those who may currently be living with in-home support, an ongoing illness, or dementia. Our compassionate residential aged care home is specially designed to provide a high level of around-the-clock support.

Our new accommodation in a household setting offers permanent, respite, and dementia care that makes you feel right at home, right away.

Our strong reputation in the Emu Plains community has been forged over many years, through close relationships with geriatricians and other medical specialists at Nepean Hospital. Edinglassie’s manager has proudly served here for nearly a decade, and warmly welcomes you to our home.

A legacy of care continues.

Edinglassie resident Neva Eggins loved working on her crafts in a corner of the former activities room that was fondly known as ‘Neva’s Nook’.

Designed for peace of mindThe latest best-practice aged care research has carefully informed our building and landscape design, and existing residents have contributed to decisions on everything from their bedroom selection, to their household artwork and crockery, and even the garden design.

Uniting’s household style of living empowers you to live your day, your way, just as you would in any family home. Edinglassie has 5 separate households of up to 20 residents, across 3 storeys. And each storey has a dedicated Uniting Homemaker, whose role is to ensure that every household is thriving and doing things that are meaningful and enjoyable.

We’re like one big familyPart of what makes Uniting Edinglassie special, is that we think of ourselves as extended family. Many of our team members have been with Uniting for years, and they’re all devoted to giving you extraordinary round-the-clock care. To forge connections between our team and residents, we make sure you’ll see the same familiar faces around your own household. And we listen to what you need and want, to help you live your day, your way.

This is your home, and your community, so you’re encouraged to make everyday decisions about the way you live here. What you like eating, which activities you enjoy, and when you’d prefer to take a nap or a shower, are all choices you can make, and change. We take the time to really get to know you, and together we’ll develop personalised routines that are familiar and meaningful, for the greatest sense of safety and comfort.

Page 9: Residential Aged Care

Your wellbeing is our focusClinical and allied healthThe physical health, safety and comfort of our residents is always our absolute priority. In addition to 24/7 nursing and personal care, you’ll have access to regular visits from a range of clinical and allied health professionals to address specific needs including podiatrists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, dietitians and GPs.

Active ageing programsSomething that we take very seriously, is having fun through physical and social recreation. Our encouragement of active ageing is what makes Uniting a little bit different. For us, active ageing means staying connected with fellow residents, friends and family members, as well as engaging in enjoyable physical activities.

Let’s dance The Uniting Seniors Ball offers a wonderful opportunity to meet other residents from all over Sydney and regional NSW, while enjoying a special evening of entertainment, dining, music and dancing.

Music therapyMusic therapists regularly visit to engage us in singing favourite songs, learning new songs, playing instruments, dancing and exercising together.

Page 10: Residential Aged Care

Leisure and pleasureAs well as our structured active ageing programs, we also have a range of things to get involved with. Uniting Edinglassie belongs to all residents, so you decide how you’d like to participate or contribute in your household and the broader residential community.

Tell us what you’re interested in, and we can cater to your personal preferences and wishes.

Love gardening? Edinglassie has installed special garden beds that are raised for easy access and mobility.

Enjoy a game of chess?Challenge a fellow resident or family member on our giant-sized outdoor board.

What’s cooking? If you’ve always loved to cook, you’ll have the opportunity to share your favourite recipes and prepare your classics in your household’s kitchen.

Your Homemaker can assist with supplying the ingredients, and offer an extra pair of helping hands.

Page 11: Residential Aged Care

Bookworm, music lover or movie buff? You’re welcome to borrow a novel, CD or DVD from the library collection found in each household. We also have an arrangement in place with Penrith Library, so you can borrow books from their extensive catalogue and have them delivered to your door.

Birdwatcher?Edinglassie residents love the local birdlife. We’ve incorporated a bird bath into our garden design, and we even have our very own aviary of feathered friends.

While emus no longer roam the plains, we’ve spotted honeyeaters, finches, fantails and even quails around our home.

Daytripper?Regular group outings to interesting places and events ensure our residents get out and about in their local community.

We have our own Edinglassie bus, so we can safely transport residents with any mobility issues. Typically, we like to end our excursions with a BBQ picnic lunch in a local park.

Nutritional wellnessAt Uniting Edinglassie, we believe you need to eat well to age well. We focus on maintaining a healthy diet, and sharing mealtimes as an enjoyable social activity. In consultation with our team of on-site chefs and a visiting dietitian, our focus is on finding ways to maximise your nutritional intake while fitting in with your personal tastes and preferences.

We run social food forums to ask our residents what they’d like to see on their seasonal menus, and each household has its own spacious kitchen for everyone to access. There’s also a full-sized commercial kitchen on site, for our professional chefs to prepare fresh meals daily.

”“Every few months, we get residents together to select the

meals they’d like to eat during the coming season. These ‘food forums’ are great for socialising, and an important way to respect and reflect personal choice and preference. Fiona, Leisure and Wellness Coordinator at Uniting Edinglassie

Pastoral servicesUniting believes that taking care of your spiritual side is just as important as your physical health. Our residents have access to a visiting chaplain and volunteers for pastoral counselling, personal reflection and opportunities for worship. There’s also the option to tune into church services via the personal smart TV in every bedroom, or the TV in your household’s lounge area.

Welcome to our caring family!Meet Di Hudson, Service Manager since 2012

What’s your professional background?I’ve been nursing in one form or another for 42 years - in aged care for 26 years, and in quality, educator and management positions for 22 years.

How long have you been at Uniting?I became the Quality Coordinator and Educator at Uniting Springwood 20 years ago, and held the position for 4 years. I then returned to the organisation in 2012, as Service Manager for Uniting Edinglassie, so I’m coming up to my 10-year anniversary here.

What do you love most about your job?For me, the best part is developing rapport and relationships with residents and their families. It also gives me a great sense of satisfaction, knowing that we’re providing a safe, comfortable, warm and loving environment. Most of our dedicated team have worked here for many years, so they’re able to give excellent person-centred care that’s familiar and reliable.

What are you looking forward to at the new Edinglassie?I’m excited to be embracing Uniting’s ‘Household Living’ approach to care, in a brand-new environment that really feels like home. I’ll be empowering my team to deliver this innovative approach, and empowering our residents to have agency and ownership of their new household.

What advice would you give to families considering your home for aged care?Even though this may be one of the toughest choices of your life, I want to reassure you that we’re here to guide and support you the whole way.

”“I want to reassure you that we’re here to guide and support you the whole way through this important decision.
