  • Residential and Commercial Design Exercise The objectives are to develop a MWELO compliant planting plan, water budget and hydrozone using the following steps:

    • Create the Maximum Applied Water Allowance • Create a minimum of 4 hydrozones including 1 Special Landscape Area

(SLA) • Choose plants from Plant List WUCOLS Region 1 • Create a compliant Estimated Total Water Use

    Calculate the MAWA

    • Calculate the total landscape area square feet • Calculate MAWA where MAWA= (Eto)(0.62)[(ETAF x LA) + ((1-ETAF) x SLA)] • ETAF is .55 for residential design and .45 for non-residential designs

    Create Hydrozones

    • Create hydrozones, considering water needs, microclimates and soil type • Calculate landscape area for each hydrozone

    Choose Plants

    • Choose plants appropriate for hydrozone areas from provided plant list • Choose irrigation method for each hydrozone (irrigation efficiency is .75 for

spray or .81 for drip) Create a compliant ETWU

    • Calculate estimated total water used by hydrozone • Total all water use • Verify compliance • If needed rework hydrozone areas or choose lower water use plants and/or

more efficient irrigation method for an improved ETWU

  • Design Exercise - Additional questions: 1. MWELO states that unless prescribed otherwise by the soils report, a

minimum of 4cy of compost per 1000sf shall be applied. How many inches of compost should you apply over 500sf?

    2. Which of the following are you required to include in your irrigation design to comply with Appendix D? Check all that apply.

Backflow prevention device Manual shut-off valve Flow Sensor

    Pressure regulator

    Drip irrigation

Landscape water submeters for non-residential landscapes over 1000sf

    3. What does PF stand for? What does ETAF stand for? What is the difference between the two?

  • Design Exercise - Additional questions:

    1. MWELO states that unless prescribed otherwise by the soils report, a minimum of 4cy of compost per 1000sf shall be applied. How many inches of compost should you apply over 500sf? 1.3” per 500sf = 2 cubic yards The Math: 1yd3= 27ft3 , so 4yd3 = 108 ft3 , so 2yd3 = 54ft3 And 1ft=12in

    108 ft3 = 0.108ft, 0.108ft x 12 in = 1.3 in OR 54 ft3 = 0.108ft, 0.108ft x 12 in = 1.3 in 1000 ft2 1ft 500 ft2 1ft

    2. Which of the following are you required to include in your irrigation design to comply with

Appendix D? Check all that apply. Backflow prevention device (not in Appendix D but required by plumbing/municipal codes)

    Manual shut-off valve Flow Sensor

    Pressure regulator Drip irrigation

Landscape water submeters for non-residential landscapes over 1000sf

    3. What does PF stand for? What does ETAF stand for? What is the difference between the two? PF is the Plant Factor. PF is used in calculating the Estimated Total Water Use for each hydrozone. Plants are categorized by their water use (high, moderate, low or very low). ETAF stands for Evapotranspiration Adjustment Factor. When calculating MAWA, ETAF is assigned by the State to be .55 for new and renovated residential landscapes and .45 for new and renovated non-residential landscapes. When determining ETWU, ETAF is the plant factor divided by the irrigation efficiency.
