something mostpeople do not liketo think about;however, theunfortunate realityis this: The chancesthat you willbecome disabled areprobably far greaterthan you realize.Studies show that a20-year-old workerhas a more than onein four chance ofbecoming disabledbefore reaching retirement age.Social Security pays benefits to

people with disabilities through theSocial Security disability insuranceprogram, which is financed by SocialSecurity taxes. If you qualify, you can receive a

monthly disability benefit from SocialSecurity for as long as your disabilitykeeps you from working. The amount of your benefit is

based on your average lifetime

earnings. Potential Medicare coverageis dependent on several factors andusually starts after you receivedisability cash benefits for 24 months.

When you workand pay SocialSecurity taxes, youearn credits. Thenumber of creditsyou need to qualifyfor disability benefitsdepends on yourage, and some of thework must berecent. For example, if

you become disabledafter age 31, youneed to have workedat least a total of 10years, including fiveof those having been

worked within the past 10 years. But if you become disabled before

age 24, you need only 1.5 years ofwork in the past three years.If you have a disability that keeps

you from working, the time to getstarted with your application is now. That’s because it takes time to

determine whether you qualify forbenefits. It usually takes about threeto five months for a medical decisionfrom the state agency that evaluates

Throughout the country, familymembers and friends provide practicalassistance and enhance the quality oflife for disabled, ill, or frail seniorswho might otherwise requireresidential long-term care. Typically,the caregivers are women.The caregiving role can be

physically, psychologically,emotionally, and financiallydemanding. While a certain degree ofstress is inevitable, when leftunchecked it can lead to the caregiverbecoming run down or “burnt out.”Depression can be one result.If you are a caregiver, consider the

following strategies for keeping stressmanageable and reducing your risk ofdeveloping clinical depression.

• Accept the reality of your relative’sillness so you can appropriately planfor the future.

• Learn as much as possible about theillness and its management, andeducate family and friends.

• Keep positive. Focus on what yourrelative can rather than what theycan’t do and on your strengths andsuccesses as a caregiver.

• Do things that bring inner peace,

such as meditating, praying, reading,writing in a journal, or listening tomusic.

• Develop a calming ritual to help youunwind at the end of the day.

• Look after your health: eatnutritious meals, get adequate rest,exercise, and see your primaryphysician regularly.

• Stay connected to people whosecompany you enjoy.

• Simplify your life. Set priorities anddon’t waste time or energy onunimportant things.

• If finances permit, hire ahousecleaning service or a personalsupport worker or companion foryour relative to free up some of yourtime and energy for self-care.

• Be flexible about plans andexpectations. Take things one day at atime.

• Give yourself permission to feel allof the emotions that surface,including resentment and frustration.Remind yourself that you are doingyour best and are only human.

Depression: An OverviewContrary to a long-held, popular

belief, depression does not stem frompersonal weakness, and the depressedindividual cannot “buck up” or “snapout of it.” Clinical or majordepression is a medical illness thatrequires professional treatment.There is considerable variation

among individuals in terms of theconstellation and severity ofemotional, mental, and physicalsymptoms that are exhibited. Themost common symptoms are:

• Weight loss or gain

• A change in sleep patterns

• Feeling tired or lacking energy

• Noticeable slowing of movements,

speech, or thinking

• Feeling guilty, incapable, unlovable,or hopeless

• Lacking interest in activities thatnormally bring enjoyment

• Withdrawal from social contact

• Preoccupation with death orrecurring thoughts of suicide

If thoughts of self-harm or harmingthe care receiver occur, help should besought immediately throughcommunity crisis resources.If any of the other symptoms

listed above persist for more than afew weeks and interfere with yourability to carry out daily activities,make an appointment to see yourprimary-care physician.Depending on the severity of

symptoms, treatment may involvecounseling, medication, or acombination of the two. The soonerhelp is obtained for depression, theeasier it is to treat.
