he ‘Chetona’ Project is implementing in the

Dhaka, Rajbari and Sylhet regions. The project

focusing on two extremely vulnerable and often

excluded groups of children in Bangladesh;

Children infected/affected AIDS (CABA) and

Children whose mothers are sex workers

(ChSW). The component of children whose

mothers are involved in sex worker, the project is

working in Dhaka, Sylhet and Rajbari Districts

where the numbers of street, hotel, and

residence-based sex workers are relatively high.

In the pilot phase, portray high level of

discrimination in educational institutions among

children of sex workers. Furthermore, the cost of

going to school increases as the child progresses

in grade, and as a result, the child often leaves

school in order to help their mother/guardian

with the domestic work and financial means.

o ascertain knowledge regarding prevention of HIV/AIDS prevention

children were asked about different ways of preventing HIV. The children

in the focus-group discussions had no knowledge that HIV/AIDS is spread

through unprotected sex and sharing of needles. The children expressed that

they often would feel discriminated against and isolated by family, peers and

neighbors due to the illness of their parents. In addition, some of the children

could not continue their studies due to the financial burden of treating the

disease.
