1. (MUST) When working with vulnerable people, care workers will always have 2 words at the forefront of their thinking - Empowerment & Independence

Give a definition for both

2. (MUST) think about yourself - give 3 examples of how you have empowerment and independence

3. (COULD) You can easily be confused with these 2 words and the meanings can blur into 1. to help you, think of 2 ways in which you do not feel empowered or independent (thinking about the restrictions because of your age may be a good start)

4. (MUST) Under what circumstances can a person lose their empowerment? The text book is very good for this - don’t waste your time with the internet!

5. (COULD) Now you have identified people who have lost their sense of empowerment, give examples of how they have lost it

6. (MUST) Under what circumstances can a person lose their independence?

8. (MUST) All care workers live by a CODE OF PRACTICE. For care workers, this is called ‘CARE VALUES’ - they should always put the people they care for first and give them respect (this is called a ‘PERSON CENTRED APPROACH’)

There are 7 care values - what are they?

9. (COULD) For each of the care values, give an example of how a care worker would use them in practice

10. (HAG) Care workers may not always get it right. Looking after other people can be very stressful. Give examples of how these care values could go wrong

Every single one of us need help and support during our lives. Some of us will need it from birth, some may be involved in an accident or suffer an illness, whilst others will need it toward the end of our lives

Respect for others

This is one of the BIG words in life. It means so much to the quality of our lives.

Try to remember the following saying and make it part of your life:

Until you prioritise kindness you will never lead a fulfilling life

Class discussion:

What does the word ‘respect’ mean to you? How do you show it? How does it make you feel when you know others are respecting you?

Showing respect is a big issue in social care. We have a pretty good idea about what it means. So, to get it into your heads, you are going to produce a poster about:

What respect means

How we show it

How it makes us feel (to give and receive)

AND, importantly, because this is about H&SC, how to show respect to those with mental health needs, older people & adolescents (use the information in the text book)

Maintaining Confidentiality

You are the manager of a care home for the elderly. You have employed 3 new care workers. Before they can start work with the care users (the elderly people who live there), they have to be trained on the ‘does & don’ts.’

The first training session is on confidentiality. Care worker are not allowed to talk about a care user to another care user or anybody who does not work there.

Your task is to produce an information sheet that will go on display in the staff room that reminds the care workers why confidentiality is really important in their work. You need to cover all of the following -

Why confidentiality is important

How a breach of confidentiality can harm people

The kinds of information that care workers need to keep confidential

When it is the right thing to do to tell the manager about something that you have been told confidentially

What could be the consequences to the care worker if they breach (break) the confidentiality rule?

How to keep information private and secure

What are the dangers of using social media?

A long standing tip on how to do things: 1. First important rule: do not go

straight to the internet

2. Use the information in the textbook - it will usually have all the information you need

3. When you have used all the information from the textbook, research the internet for additional information and for images that will enhance your work

Preserving dignity &

Effective communication

For this lesson we are combining 2 topics (in the textbook they are on pages 104 - 107).

We want you to prepare a presentation. It could be to an assembly of your year group, an audience made up of care workers…. You get the idea.

You need to cover the following points (you do not have to answer them question by question):

1. Dignity is important because…

2. Examples of how a person can lose their dignity

3. Examples of how to demonstrate dignity (that you are showing someone you respect their dignity)

4. Why good communication skills are important

5. Examples of good communication skills

Don’t forget - it’s up to you, but here are some suggestions:

You could deliver it as a speech (so you will need to write your points down in bullet form or write out a script)

You could do it as a power point presentation with different slides for each point

It could be a poster that you would talk to the audience about and then display around the building

You could work with a friend to produce a role play (of course, you could do it by yourself and have 2 imaginary people performing the role play). You will need to produce a script if you choose to do it this way

Safeguarding & duty of care

This is one of the most important things a care worker needs to be aware of. As a care worker, you have a responsibility to protect people you work with from abuse. A care user has a right to be protected from abuse.

1. (MUST) Why is safeguarding important?

2. (MUST) Unfortunately, there are many types of abuse. Give examples of 5 and describe how this kind of abuse can happen

3. (MUST) You now need to imagine that you are a care worker. Give examples of signs that you may identify indicating that abuse may be taking place

4. (MUST) as a care worker, you strongly suspect that abuse is taking place. What should you do?

5. (SHOULD) Complete the activity on page 109

6. (COULD) Look at ‘check my learning’ on page 109. What safeguarding measures would a care home need to have in place for a resident suffering from dementia? This will require you to do an internet search; you could start by doing a search for a dementia care home in your area to see what kind of facilities they provide

Promoting anti-discriminatory practice &

applying care values in a compassionate way

Discrimination can come in many forms but they all usually result in the same outcome - leaving a person feeling frightened, depressed and often lonely.

Discrimination means treating someone or a group of people unfairly or less well than others. It is against the law to discriminate. The following categories are protected under the Equality Act 2010 which means it is illegal to discriminate in situations like a job interview based on :-

Age, gender, disability, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation.

The world goes to a lot of trouble to stop discrimination - how successful do you think it has been?

There is a saying we should all live by -

Showing kindness to others makes you feel very special about yourself.

Acting in an anti-discriminatory way and showing people you care are important for all of us and especially care workers. Care workers not only need to say they care but they also need to show it.

Types of discrimination—insulting comments, excluding

people, spreading rumours, hate crimes, making someone

look silly, not giving everyone the same information, mak-

ing unkind remarks, ignoring people.

All of these things can make people feel isolated or de-

pressed, disempowered, can give physical health problems,

low self-esteem and anxiety, suicidal thoughts.

Activity 1– Create a poster that you can use to fight discrimination. Emphasise

that discrimination must never be tolerated and people should be valued for

whoever they are.

Activity 2—Add a passage of writing onto your poster that gives information on

how you can welcome differences and diversity in a group, how to demonstrate

tolerance and how to support someone who is being discriminated against.

Activity 3—You have a new volunteer working for you in your care home. Have a

discussion with them about anti-discrimination and outline all of the things that

you could say to make sure they know the rules. You could role play this with

parents, write your ideas down or simply think it through in your head.

Working together

Working in a health & social care setting (i.e. care home for the elderly, hospice)

is all about showing care and respect.

Everyone in the setting needs to ensure that all staff are working to the care

values. Eg cleaners knocking on doors before entering a residents room or a

doctor empowering an elderly couple to make choices about their care and

medical needs.

A good care worker will not get angry or blame someone else. They are able to

put feelings and emotions to one side and complete the task following all of the

acre values. This can be difficult in certain situations.

Staff need training to be able to do this, and feedback id often given so that

positives can be shared.

Working together– Work to complete

Your task is to create a leaflet. Your leaflet should simply say WHY care values

are important and How they should be applied in the setting you have chosen (i.e.

care home, hospice). Include all of the care values we have talked about,

empowering and promoting independence, respect, confidentiality, dignity,

effective communication, safeguarding and duty of care, anti-discriminatory

practice.

Once you have completed that, look at these quotes.

Think about each and explain why it is an example of good practice or why it is an

example of poor practice - saying why and what should happen to turn it into good

practice.

“When my Grandad was ill, the care worker sat with him and talked gently to him.

She continued talking even though he was unable to reply”

My Grandmother lives in a care home. She has dementia and this can make her

difficult at times. The care staff are abrupt and often ignore her.

Making mistakes & reviewing own

application of care values

It’s pretty straightforward to understand that we all make mistakes. Sometimes, the hardest thing is to admit that we have made a mistake.

In health & social care is it VITAL that care workers admit they have made a mistake. Mistakes can nearly always be put right, but if we hide them the damage to the health and wellbeing of individuals could be catastrophic.

Think of a list of mistakes that people in Health and Social Care could make.

How do we feel when making mistakes?

A sinking feeling in our chest

Worried about the result of the mistake

Frustrated and annoyed with ourselves

Fearful that others will judge your ability to do the job

Disappointed

Ashamed

Embarrassed

Stupid

However most mistakes can be put right as long as you are honest, do not pretend it didn't happen and do not blame other people.

Alex works with a drugs team in a care home and is a support worker. He helps people withdraw from drugs, and this can be a very difficult job. Often the people who he supports can be restless, anxious or have difficulty concentrating. Alex has been working long hours and he is very tired. A person that Alex is supporting becomes angry and shouts at him. Alex responds by shouting back and telling the service user how tired he is. Alex realises he has not acted in a professional way and has not used his care values.

Which care values has Alex not used?

How would you have handled this situation?

Tell your supervisor, admit your mistake and apologise

Be honest and accurate about what happened

Suggest ways to avoid the mistake happening again

Earn back the trust of the person involved

Prove you can do your job

Do not be too hard on yourself, seek help and guidance from others to manage your own feelings.

Receiving feedback & using feedback

When you start work you will receive training to do the job. You will be trained in everything you do. You will probably have a supervisor who will support you and watch you to make sure everything is going well.

After a certain period of time, your supervisor will meet with you to give you feedback on how well they think you are doing. In this meeting they will talk about how well they think you are doing. In this meeting they will talk about your strengths and weaknesses and give you strategies to turn those weaknesses into strengths.

This process will continue throughout the entirety of your career. Recognising what your do well and what you need to improve is important for working effectively.

Here are some strengths and weaknesses you may recognise. Choose what you think you are good and weak at. It is hard to think about what you are good at and give yourself praise for it. Knowing your strength will allow you to complete tasks easily. If you know you can do something well you will feel confident.

Are there things you find difficult? If you recognise them you can start developing them. If you share your thoughts with people you work with they can help you. It is not a bad thing to have weaknesses or areas to develop.

When we return to school you are either going to do 2 role plays that will demonstrate that you understand the care values. Your teacher will watch you and fill in an observation form or we will work with vulnerable adults in a care home to do the same task.

Part 1

Your first task is to look back through your work and the powerpoint slides I have sent you, to write a brief paragraph about the meaning of the care values:

Empowering and promoting independence

Respect for the individual

Maintaining confidentiality

Preserving the dignity of the individuals

Effective communication that displays empathy and warmth

Safeguarding and a duty of care

Promoting anti-discriminatory practice

When we return to school You will be given 2 scenarios to choose from - your task will be to write your role play for each. You must ensure you include all the care values you have just described - for each role play.

You teacher will want to watch you perform your role play. They are looking to make sure you have covered all the care values. They will also want a copy of your scripts and your description of the care values

Part 2

You now have to write a report on what you thought went well and what could be improved upon in your role plays. Your teacher will give you feedback to help.

Break it down into 2 sections:

What went well

What did not go so well.

Don’t forget - this is only about the care values

Part 3

Finally, you now need to say how you could improve the way you applied the care values in your role play.

Break it down using the template below, doing it for each care value:
