The Dance Expo performances this week have been highly successful. Thank you to all the parents and caregivers who have supported and attended the days. Thank you to all the students who have not only

very professional at all times. Thank you to Amber Kriletich, Morgan Randall, Miss Wilson, Miss Williams and Miss McCartney for the incredible choreography and organization of the dance groups this year. Next semester, Kindergarten and Years 3 and 4 will participate in the dance program. Band Congratulations to all the bands for their outstanding performances in the Pittwater Festival last Thursday and Friday nights. The Festival assessors proclaimed that Manly West Bands set the benchmark for all the
bands on the Northern Beaches. We thank Miss Penny Coucill, for her outstanding expertise and innovation with all the bands. She annually attends a huge Music Conference in Chicago USA as part of her own professional learning and always has the highest of expectations for all our students.
Thank you Holly Docker-Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program On Thursday afternoon, a farewell assembly has been organised to thank Holly Docker for the outstanding contributions that she has made at Manly West with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program.
The three-year program has included Mrs Sara Lind and Mrs Beth Dowdle working alongside Holly and all the students, parents and caregiver volunteers. From the Deputys’ Desk Debating News
Last Friday, we hosted our first debate as part of the Northern Beaches Debating Competition. Our
Year 5 team, consisting of Aiman Shahriar, Gracie Noble, Amelia Crouch, Audrey Ray, Ava Nicolson
and Charlie Highnam, debated that ‘Homework should not be compulsory’. Seaforth Public School
won the debate, this time. Our Year 6 Debating team, consisting of Zoe Ball, Lexie Landrak,
Hannah Mcllwane, Ally Doyle and Olly Todd, won their debate, negating the topic, ‘We should have a
three day weekend’. Congratulations to both teams and thank you to Mrs Siale and Mrs Gaynor for
their support.
Thank you
We would like to acknowledge the contribution of all our parent,
grandparent, carer and community volunteers who give their time to
support students. One special volunteer, Lola, who has been assisting
with Literacy and Numeracy Groups in KY for the past three years,
celebrated a special birthday on Sunday. Lola, on behalf of Manly West,
thank you and Happy 90th birthday!
Three Kindergarten students, Hugo Lawrence,
Callum Neal and Harley Watts-Conn have been
collecting rubbish in a bucket after school each
day. We would like to congratulate and thank
them for their commitment to caring for our
school grounds. We hope that their efforts will
encourage others to be more mindful of litter.
Basketball Court Renovation Safety Alert
During the holiday break, the synthetic material on our lower basketball
court will be replaced. For safety reasons, we ask that families avoid
school grounds. There will be heavy vehicles on site, barricades and
limited access from Boyle Street.
Maths Workshop for Parents
On the second Tuesday of Term 3, 25th July, we are holding a Maths
Workshop for Parents. This will be held in the Year 6 rooms from 9:30
-10:30 am. The focus of the workshop is Early Numeracy Strategies
and is similar to the workshop presented to K-2 parents last year. The
target audience is K-2 parents, however, all parents and carers are
welcome to attend. I encourage Kindergarten parents to join us and
any parent who has not attended this workshop previously. The
workshop presenters are Mrs Tara Israel, facilitator of the Targeting
Early Numeracy Strategies program and Mrs Lara Richards, Year One
class teacher. Both teachers have taught Kindergarten, Year One and
Year Two students at Manly West and have a thorough understanding
of the learning progressions in the early years. If you plan to attend,
please RSVP to the school email address with Maths Parent Workshop
in the subject line and your name and grade/s of your child/children at Manly West in the body of
the email.

Library News
2017’s Book Week theme next term is ESCAPE TO EVERYWHERE and reading books certainly does take people to all sorts of places! Come visit the library to see where Manly West students have been ‘travelling’ through the books they have read. You will be so surprised by their responses!
By now, all Scholastic Book Club orders have been delivered. This has been made possible by the wonderful volunteer helpers, Emma King, Jack, Ben and Kate Mooney plus Kerrie and Robert King! Thank you again for your orders, as our school library will receive new books from the
commission of your purchases. You have made all Manly West readers an even happier bunch!
The following students have escaped to fantastic places because they have completed the 2017 Premier’s Reading Challenge: Naima De Souza (6T), William Procter (3/4R), Katie Gallinetti (1S), James Ford (3P), Prescott Williams (2T), Ella Cotton (4J), Lachlan Holley (2W), Austin Holley (5J) and Iris Watt (4B)!!! All students have just
under 2 months to complete the PRC. Check out the PRC website (https://online.det.nsw.edu.au/prc/home.html) for all the rules and helpful hints to ensure successful completion of the PRC 2017. Remember that all reading logs need to be completed, printed out and turned in before or by Friday, August 25th, 2017 to receive an ASPIRE card, a bookmark, your name published here and a certificate at the end of the year. Snuggle up with some great books these holidays, and there will be heaps of names here next term!
Happy reading!

BRAVE
Being BRAVE when you are in Year One is showing
courage, facing your worries and trying hard, even
when you are scared, fearful or just plain don’t know.
We all have felt scared or fearful. We have felt scared
when we: start a new school year, meet someone
new, need to make new friends, have a fight with a
best friend, lose mum or dad at the shops, hurt
ourselves badly and need to go to hospital, see a
scary movie or ad, or sometimes when we just can’t
understand what is wanted of us. Being BRAVE is showing courage and Courage can be a
trickster because – it often looks different from the outside to the way you would expect it to
feel on the inside. WE are practising: identifying our emotions, calming techniques,
remembering bad things do happen but that they don’t last, talking to our friends and the adults
in our lives and asking for help and concentrating on the good things in life all the while knowing
that nobody is perfect and that WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES. YEAR ONE IS LEARNING TO BOUNCE
BACK! We hope you enjoy our version of being BRAVE.
Chess News
To Tara Smith, Kasper Lowe, John Engledew and Noah Zingsheim-Smith for

Beaches every Friday afternoon. Thank you so much to Yolanda, Stefanie, Marius
and Joyce for your help in driving the children to the away games and providing
delicious snacks for the home games.

Band News NORTHERN BEACHES MUSIC FESTIVAL, 22-23 JUNE 2017
These were some of the comments given at the Northern Beaches Music Festival last week.
“Manly West Bands set the standard for Primary School Bands”; “One of the most comprehensive band programs I’ve seen”; “I can’t believe you have only been playing together for 2 terms”; “The calibre of the
music you are playing is well beyond primary years” ………
All bands should be extremely proud of their performances and Penny would like to congratulate you all.
Thank you to parents who battled the traffic to get there and of course, to Penny Coucill, our amazing Band Director for driving the fabulous band program we have.
Have a great break and make sure you keep practising over the holidays.

products through branding and packaging design. The workshop offers a great mix of hands on activities and
high-tech manufacturing to make bespoke items.

Manly West carnival.
