Why do I need to replace my 3M™ Filters regularly?Particulate filters get clogged up and become harder to breathe through.

Gas and vapour cartridge filters start to let contaminant through once their

sorbent becomes saturated. This is called breakthrough.

How do 3M™ ParticulateFilters work? These filters are enhanced with electrostatically charged fibres to trap

particulates within the filter media.

As particulate filters load up with the contaminant, they typically become

more efficient; however, they also become harder to breathe through.

AS/NZS 1716 uses a classification system to identify the different types of

particulate protection required:

When do I replace my 3M™ Particulate Filters?+ When it becomes difficult to breathe comfortably. (this will vary from

individual to individual).

+ When the filter becomes dirty or physical damage occurs.

How do 3M™ Gas & Vapour Filters work? These filters rely on sorbent material to “soak up” the gas and vapour

molecules.

Typically the sorbent is carbon grain, which has been specifically treated.

Depending on the chemical treatment of the carbon surface, this material

will absorb different types of gases or vapours.

AS/NZS 1716 uses a classification system to identify the different types of

contaminants these treated carbon grains will capture e.g. A, B, E, K, Hg

and G.

P1Particles generated by mechanical processes e.g. grinding, sanding

P2Particles generated by mechanical and thermal processes e.g. welding

P3 All Particles including highly toxic materials

A Organic Vapours (bolling point > 65˚C)

B Inorganic Gases

E Acid Gases

K Ammonia

Hg Mercury

G Organic Compounds with low vapour pressure

Respirators3M™ Reusable

When do I Replace 3M™ Gas & Vapor Cartridges? The service life (i.e. how long it will last) of any gas and vapour

cartridge filter is affected by many factors, including:

concentration and identity of contaminants, breathing rates, humidity

levels, temperature, carbon type and exposure time.

Replace both the 3M™ Gas & Vapour Cartridge Filters:

+ When the expiry date stamped on the sealed packet has elapsed.

+ Once opened, maximum use time is 6 months (even if not used). The carbon will absorb contaminants from the general environment.

+ When contaminant can be detected by smell or taste.

+ In accordance with your established Filter Change Schedule.

To avoid smelling or tasting the contaminant when using 3M™ Gas & Vapour Cartridge Filters, take the following steps:

+ When you get a new pair of 3M Gas & Vapour Cartridge Filters check the expiry date on the back of the pack.

+ Record the date on the filters when first removed from the pack.

+ Use the filters on your respirator in your normal work environment.

+ If at any time you smell or taste the contaminant or irritation is detected, the filters need replacing.

+ Take note of how long the filters lasted by comparing the date recorded on the filter and the current date.

+ If work practices remain the same and the levels of vapours/gases are consistent, replace your filters on a more regular timescale:

+ Or in accordance with your established Filter Change Schedule.

Frequently AskedQuestionsHow should I store my 3M™ Reusable Respirator and

Filters?

When not in use, your 3M™ Respirator and Filters should be kept clean

and dry, and away from oil, sunlight and chemicals to avoid deterioration. A

sealable storage container or should be utilised for this purpose.

Why do I need to use a Particulate Filter with my Gas &

Vapour Cartridge Filters for some applications?

The particulate filter removes the tiny droplets or particles in the air (e.g.

mists from spray painting). The gas and vapour cartridge filters do not filter

these particles. If no particulate filter is used, they could be breathed in.

What is a Fit Test?

Because everyone’s face is different, a fit test is used to determine an

adequate match between the face piece of a respirator and the face of the

wearer. Ideally this should be done before the respirator is first issued and

then at regular intervals. See AS/NZS1715 for details on fit testing.

Can I wear a respirator with a beard?

Any facial hair has the potential to break the face seal of a respirator,

letting contaminants leak into the mask. We recommend that people

wearing respiratory protection be clean-shaven, to enable the respirator to

achieve a good seal against the face.

3M™ Gas Diffusion Monitors3M™ Gas Diffusion Monitors are simple and effective devices that

collect certain airborne contaminants using the principle of diffusion.

They assist in the assessment of exposure to workplace contaminants,

both personal and background. These monitors are easy to use and

simply clip onto the shirt, collar or pocket.

3M™ Organic Vapour MonitorUses a single wafer carbon sorbent for collecting organic vapours. The 3500 can be used for most applications, particularly suited to routine sampling of exposures to common solvents such as Toluene, Xylenes, Styrene, Naptha and White Spirits.

3M™ Organic Vapour Monitor with Backup SectionUses a dual layer carbon sorbent for collecting organic vapours. Especially suited for monitoring compounds such as vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, methylene chloride and butadiene for which activated carbon shows limited capacity. The 3520 has 2 layers for increased sampling capacity. Increased capacity may be necessary when sampling volatile compounds (compounds with low boiling points), high or unknown concentrations, complex mixtures or when sampling in high humidity.

3M™ Ethylene Oxide MonitorDesigned for measuring exposures to Ethylene Oxide such as those in the pharmaceutical, health care and chemical industries. The 3351 utilises brominated carbon to collect and convert reactive ethylene oxide to a more stable derivative called 2-bromoethanol. They can be used for 15 minute STEL sampling.

3M™ Formaldehyde MonitorDesigned for measuring exposures to Formaldehyde such as those in the chemical, pulp and paper, foundry and textiles industries. The 3721 uses an impregnated filter to convert formaldehyde to a stable bisulfite addition product.

3M™ Qualitative Fit Test KitsThe biggest contributor to reduced respiratory protection is poor fit.

Conducting a fit test to ensure that a respirator with a tight fitting

facepiece provides an adequate seal to the wearer’s face has long been

considered best practice as part of a general respiratory protection

program.

Reflecting this, a fit test for wearers of respiratory protection is now

required for compliance to AS/NZS1715:2009.

The 3M Qualitative Fit Test apparatus FT-10 and FT-30 are designed

for fit testing disposable and half face reusable respirators fitted with

Training and Support3M’s team of Certified Occupational Hygienists and Technical Specialists offer support and training to meet the needs of our customers.

They can provide customers:

• Initial and ongoing technical support • Advice and training for your company, including audits for your workplace • Coordination of fit testing for respiratory and hearing protection

No matter how effective a piece of PPE is, it will offer little or no protection if it is not fitted and worn correctly. Proper inspection, cleaning and storage is vital for safety equipment that protects a worker's health and well being.

That is why 3M offers training programs that explain the correct way to fit, inspect, clean and store the PPE designed and manufactured by our company.

Our Specialist Field Representatives are trained and can provide Certificate IV style workplace training. They can provide quality onsite training and ongoing support.
