Megatile removal• FEA of overall HB shows less than 0.4mm

maximum deformation from ideal shape. This deformation is gradual, not local.

• So deformation of slot should be less than 0.4mm• Megatile has 2mm design clearance. So no binding.

AdditionalQuestionfromplenaryonsegmentationtomitigateraddamage

Page 27: Response to Reviewer Questions - indico.fnal.gov

Issue• Light yield of inner HB scintillator layers will be reduced by radiation damage.• One way to preserve light yield is to use additional wave length shifting (WLS)

fibers to bring light from each scintillator cell to the corresponding photosensor(i.e greater segmentation).

• This requires available photosensor area and additional space in the fiberrouting.

• Photosensor area is available in the existing design because of the longitudinal segmentation.• In addition, the HB segmentation is not finalized, so this consideration can be

included in the design.

• Additional space in available for fibers. With thinner fibers (less light) we think we can ~ 5fibers

Page 28: Response to Reviewer Questions - indico.fnal.gov

Phase 1 longitudinal segmentation

• In existing detector, light from each cell is carried to photosensors with a single 940um Kuraray Y11 WLS fiber (except for layers 0, which uses 2 fibers).

• The light from each colored group in each η tower (indices 16-28) is readout with a single photosensor (SiPM).

η index

Page 29: Response to Reviewer Questions - indico.fnal.gov

HB SiPM assignment

• PhaseI HE will use SiPMs with 3.3mm diameter for 7-layer depth segments and 2.8mm diameter for all other depth segments (maximum of 4 fibers).

• Assuming HB uses 3.3mm SiPMs everywhere:• Depth1 could use up to 7 fibers for layer0.• Depth2 could use • EITHER: 5 fibers for layer1, and 1 each for layers 2 and 3• OR: 4 fibers for layer1, and 2 for layer2, and 1 fiber for layer3

• Assuming HB uses 2.8mm SiPMs for depth2 and depth1 (same as HE):• Depth1 could use 4 fibers for layer0.• Depth2 could use 2 fibers from layer1, and 1 each for layers 2 and 3.

• Other options for HB:• make Depth2 from only two layers increasing fiber count layers 1 and 2.
