The underlying symptom of many repeat impaired drivers is the prevalence of substance use disorders. Without treatment, this repeated behavior is unlikely to change or will reemerge in the future. Understand the impact alcohol and drug use has on the brain and the importance of individualized, long-term, evidence-based treatment is in changing behavior and leading to recovery.

Supervision and technology

Highlighting the importance of intensive supervision and the use of technology in supervising repeat impaired drivers in the community, the panel will discuss intensive supervision, the various tools and technology used to monitor alcohol and drug use, and the research recognizing the effectiveness of those technological tools.

Based on the successful drug court model, DWI courts are targeted for the repeat impaired driver with moderate to severe substance use disorders; i.e., high-risk/high-need; and, are structured under the Ten Guiding Principles and Adult Drug Court Best Practice Standards. Hear more about the structure of DWI courts and the research demonstrating success in the reductions of recidivism and cost savings.
