[Restaurant Review] June - July 12Catch Beach C lub | Twinpa lms Phuket | Sur in Beach | Te l . 076 316 567 | www.twinpa lms-phuket .com

Relax on a cool breezy day after a tropical downpour at Catch Beach Club, a private classy and comfortable dining room perched on Surin Beach.

At the Beach Club Zone you’ll be strolling on a white sand beach, watching the sunset, lying on white deck chairs or chilled out in square sitting areas. As the rain stopped, I commenced the night out at the Bar Zone facing the beach.

A large spacious area can accommodate up to 300 guests, and is available either for events or private dining. Furnishings with softly rounded sofa chairs, a designed ancient earthen jar base fitted well with a thick mirrored top and long chair, a small lit candle on a table – all present well with the surrounding beach atmosphere. Enjoy all day music with DJs and an hour live band.

Among various signature cocktails, I chose one with a red cocktail umbrella called Catch’s Mai Thai, a strong rum based and fruity mixed drink. It contains quality rum and ingredients mixed by a professional bartender. My young colleagues had the Surin Propaganda – a shot created purely for Surin Beach. It is a bright drink with sweet tastes of strawberry and lychee and a strong raspberry flavor of vodka raspberry, sour of passion and a bit bitter – a sublime combination!

Walking across the small path to the buffet line areas, the ease of the buffet concept is even more apparent when you’re starving for a nice and extensive choice of food. Catch Beach Club is impressive as usual with their quality ingredients and delectable tastes.

From a choice of homemade bread, French and Italian breads, to cheeses like Swiss cheese and French brie – there are so many delicious items to try. A wide array of fresh salad bar items includes tomatoes, rocket salad, lettuce, cabbage, cucumbers and so on. Firm fresh seafood ranges from crab and tiger prawns to calamari and sea mussels, with cocktail sauce or Thai style seafood sauce. In the ice trays next to the Japanese zone are imported Fin de Claire oysters, the best of the world’s oysters.

The Roast & Grills section serves lamb, chicken and roasted duck grilled in a handmade French imported grill machine that makes the meat soft and moist. Pizza is original Italian thin crust. The Japanese Zone is full of fresh and quality products like imported Norway/Australian salmon, South African squid, high quality tuna and Japanese sake.

At the dessert station, you can have a tantalizing taste of Kiwi fruit with chocolate, a sweet chocolate cake, a choice of Thai fruits like papaya or pineapple, or cooling ice cream.

Catch Beach Club presents the world’s best quality and premium products and cuisine. The staff is well-trained to take care of you and you will be impressed!

Secretly nestled amidst a green oasis, Secret Cliff Restaurant & Bar is part of the Secret Cliff Resort. It is perched on cliff right between Patong and Karon, which requires 5 minutes traveling from Patong Beach.

you to enjoy the alluring sunset over the turquoise Andaman Sea in the embrace of a nice landscaped garden. The sound of waves hitting the shore and singing summer cicadas drowns out the bustle of road traffic.

The venue has spacious dining areas decorated in a tropical style reflecting Thai-inspired accents such as wood furniture, handicrafts and mobiles.

Secret Cliff is open for all day dining from 6:30am to midnight. Whether it is breakfast, lunch, dinner or anything in between, you are sure to find a tantalizing treat.

The restaurant serves fusion Thai and international cuisine. Even if you have visited this restaurant before, you may still find something new to explore on the menu. Check out some of the recommended dishes.

The team puts creativity into their menus. Sample the Secret Club Sandwich which comes in two slices, served with fries and quality bacon that stands out.

Secret Seafood Cocktails will whet your appetite. The presentation is unique with a whole coconut holding a variety of seafood. You can even enjoy the coconut flesh after finishing the prawns, fish, squid and New Zealand mussels.

Sample the popular Pad Thai, made here with a special signature sauce and served with large fresh tiger prawns. Another dish worth a try is Chicken Massaman Curry where four flavors fit in one dish: sour, sweet, salty, coconut. It tastes mellow and is perfectly matched with hot fragrant jasmine rice. For meat lovers, we recommend New Zealand imported lamb racks with mint sauce.

The bar serves a range of drinks and cocktails. Happy hours are from 4:30pm to 6:30pm daily. Don’t miss a chance to order a drink at dusk and extend the romance under a starlit night with the help of light jazz and Latin music.

Secret Cliff is spacious and divided into zones, making it ideal for a small to medium scale private party.

[Restaurant Review] June - July 12Nik i ta ’s Res taurant | Rawai | Te l . 076 288 703 | www.n ik i tas -phuket .com

If you like to indulge in the relaxed and slow life, Nikita’s will be just what you are looking for.

A small beach bar in the past, it nowadays is an ample restaurant with 80 seats available to serve you from 10am to 10:30pm every day. If you travel from Chalong, Nikita’s Restaurant will be on you left side, just 200 meters from Rawai Beach Pier. Notice the pine trees.

Nikita'’s RestaurantRelaxed dining at

Nikita’s Restaurant is not a luxurious restaurant but more of a casual beach bar setting taking advantage of a location by the water. The atmosphere is relaxed, as is the style of service. Friendly staff greet you with smiles once you enter. All you need to do is decide whether to sit under the covered sala or at garden tables, or chill out at a table by the seaside. The tropical wind that blows

through all day and night long makes air-conditioning unnecessary. Or if the weather is unbearable for you, a mug of super cool beer could help.

The restaurant serves a wide range of international foods including some favorite Thai dishes.

One of the restaurant’s most popular menu items you should try is the pizza. Here they offer more than ten kinds of authentic pizzas. Right from the wood fire oven, the wonderful smells combined with the crispiness and quality of the pizza toppings will leave you delighted. We recommend seafood pizza and calzone, a traditional folded Italian pizza stuffed with mozzarella cheese, eggs and meat.

Thai food aficionados can tickle their taste buds with seafood spicy salad. For the main course, look no farther to anything else but simply one of the most popular Thai dishes,

steamed fish in lime sauce. The scents of Thai herbs and perfect taste of the lime sauce brings out the sweetness of the fresh fish. The lime’s soft touch plays the important role in making the dish well worth a try and perfect to go with a plate of jasmine rice. Do not allow yourself to leave without a taste of Nikita’s prawns in garlic too!

If you are just passing by or head here for the sake of relaxation on a lazy afternoon or evening, or just need a place to sit down and socialize with your friends, Nikita’s also offers a great selection of wines, cocktails and some exotic drinks. Make sure to ask for some snacks.

[Restaurant Review] June - July 12Mal i Seafood Karon | Karon Beach | Te l . 08 1270 2100, 08 7266 8721 | www.mal i sea food.com

It was a cloudy afternoon. A bit late for lunch, we were in Karon and looking for a place to fill our rumbling stomachs. We finally decided to grab a table at Mali Seafood which is located just a few metres away from Karon roundabout. The restaurant is a popular venue on the island with a great reputation.

Karon is known among tourists as an area offering many choices for upscale dining experiences. It also doesn’t lack more casual venues where you can enjoy fresh seafood with smaller price tags.

Mali SeafoodFresh tastes of

Mali Seafood has a great location by Nai Harn Lake where you can sit in the open-air dining lounge and benefit from the natural breeze coming off the water. It’s a very relaxing atmosphere.

Mali Seafood is a paradise for seafood lovers. The restaurant offers a variety of seafood cooked in many styles whether Thai, Chinese, European, grilled, steamed, etc, to your liking. If you are bursting to explore Thai foods more exotic than Pad Thai, Tom Yum Goong, or Green Curry, you can ask for unfamiliar names

like Poo Lon (Crab Dip), Keng Liang (Vegetable Soup) and Tom Som (Spicy Sweet and Sour Soup), to name a few.

All the dishes we ordered were seafood. Pla Tod Samoon Phray is a deep-fried whole sea bass topped with lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves and garlic. The texture of the crispy fish goes well with the aroma of Thai herbs, and is tastier when eaten with Thai style spicy sour dip.

Pla Meuk Neung Ma-Nao, or steamed squid with spicy chili and lime sauce, is another dish we would like to recommend. The freshly sweet and dense texture of the squid is already enough to blow your taste buds away. The tangy sauce makes the dish even more exciting.

Goong Pad Sauce Makham might sound common but the dish is always an excellent

choice for any family with little ones. Deep fried prawns with tamarind sauce and cashew nuts are more palatable to amateurs of the spiciness of Thai food.

We ordered another Phad Pong Karee to complete our meal. Stir-fried whole crab with curry powder served hot. The dish tasted just perfect. It is not spicy but still remains flavorful. Nothing beats the taste of crab meat enhanced with curry sauce – it just explodes in your mouth.

There is also a salad bar, sushi, and some international dishes on offer. Mali Seafood opens everyday for lunch and dinner, from noon to midnight. Reservations are recommended.

Mom was right with her saying, “You’ve got to eat well to function well.” It can be tempting to abandon your good sense of diet with the array of delicious food available on holiday. Despite all excuses, finding healthy food is worthwhile and can even add some new flavor to your vacation.

Many tourists play it safe by relying on fast food in department stores – however, that’s no way to take in the local fare – until now. Thanks to the crucial culinary business in Phuket and high competition, department

store restaurants and café bistros aren’t to be underestimated. Alongside worldwide franchised restaurants, there are many individually owned bistros with divine fare. Kitchen Plus is one of them.

The setting at Kitchen Plus reinforces the holiday feeling of escapism with a chic and intimate bistro located on the 1st floor at HomePro Village Phuket near Chalong. It offers a sophisticated touch in its modern fine dining atmosphere. High windows on three sides give a spacious feel and allow natural

light in during the day. Pendant lights add sculptural style overhead and are matched with discreet furnishing and strong artwork in an air-conditioned setting that will take you on a journey punctuated by delicious Thai specialties. On a sunny day the best place to sit is at one of the casual al fresco dining tables along the side of the restaurant with a nice coffee and chit chat.

Appealing with a neat bistro setting, Kitchen Plus offers authentic Thai dishes at affordable prices. Frankly most Thai restaurants on the island must cater to large foreign clientele, which leads many of them to compromise by adding sweetness and toning down chili heat. Here the compromises are not so obvious and surely you will experience traditional flavors.

The last thing you want while you’re on holiday is food that is hard to digest! At Kitchen Plus the food is made fresh to ensure your good health. All curry pastes are made

from fresh herbs ground up in a mortar only when your dish is ordered. No curry powder is used in their Thai curry and no factory ingredients are used in any of the cuisine.

Gang Prick Gai Baan, or curry with domestic fowl, displayed the rich flavor of curry absorbed in chicken cutlet. The curry was about right, not too thick and creamy. Domestic fowl is rarely found these days. It’s different compared to farmed poultry as it’s leaner. This dish really shows the chef’s attention to detail and is worth a try!

Mueak Tod Prik Glue, otherwise known as fresh squid fried with fresh chili and salt, is another suggested menu item you won’t want to miss. The chef has added a touch of creativity by using a little spice from fresh chilies to light up the classic fried squid with garlic and salt. It really gives it a bit of kick.

In addition to the sure-handed spicing of cuisine, Kitchen Plus has a good list of cocktails such as the Mandarin Mojito. The sweet and sour mix can enhance a night out.

Kitchen Plus fans or any food enthusiasts can also welcome a new outlet called Tablespoon, managed under the same umbrella and located just above Kitchen Plus. Tablespoon is decorated unlike any other bistro on the island. It is super sweet and cute, featuring Western dishes like light lunches, salads and spaghetti. One of the most famous dishes is strawberry salad with grilled chicken served with chocolate dressing. Not only is the décor appealing but so is the selection of dishes.

[Extra Story] June - July 12Tantalizing tastes of Thai appetizers

No matter what you call them – appetizers, snacks, tapas, hors d’oeuvres – they are bite-sized treats that can be quite substantial or even turn into a meal unto themselves. Thais enjoy ‘snacking’ throughout the day and into the night, and of course, there is no end to the choices in this category of Thai cuisine.

Miang Kum is a favourite Thai appetizer nowadays. This food requires a lot of chewing but is fun to eat and great for social gatherings. Traditionally from the middle part of Thailand, it involves wrapping little titbits of several ingredients in a leaf (Piper sarmentosum leaf or in Thai, Cha Plu) along with a sweet-and-salty sauce.

The edible leaves are most often served with dried shrimps, limes, shallots, small hot chillies, peanuts, ginger and roasted coconut in separate little bowls. Take a leaf and place a small amount of each of the filling ingredients in the middle; top with a spoonful of sauce; and fold up into a little package. Pop the package into your mouth – yum! Chewing the myriad of ingredients together gives taste receptacles on the tongue a thrilling

experience from the textures and the sweet tastes to the tanginess of lime with zest and the pungent bursts of diced ginger and chillies. This is great party food.

Saku Sai Mu is clear tapioca pearl balls filled with a tiny bit of ground pork, peanut, turnip and a touch of sugar. Balance out the sweetness by chewing on a bit of chilli pepper along with cilantro and lettuce. The little morsels can also be filled with chicken instead of pork.

Another finger food that is good is Khao Kriab Pak Mor. This is not easy to find in a restaurant but that doesn’t mean it isn’t good. This sweet rice-skin dumpling is best when you have it freshly made. Pak Mor means ‘pot mouth’ as the rice skin is cooked on a piece of cloth on top of a pot/bowl which is then covered for steaming. The rice skin is stuffed with chicken and chopped herbs and nuts. Look for these dumplings

when you go to the Sunday Market or come across street vendors in a village markets. They are well worth trying.

Khao Tang Na Tang, yet another popular appetizer, consists of crispy rice cake and peanut, pork and prawn dip. In the past, large Thai families cooked their rice in a big deep pan. Thai rice at the bottom of the pan was refried to make rice crackers or Khao Tang. Various dips and toppings are added to create a great snack.

There are too many other Thai appetizers to list them all – but simply take yourself down to the local markets and you’ll be sure to see them. Don’t be afraid to try everything – you might just find a recipe to take home for your own parties!
