• The questionnaire was distributed amongst the teachers who were present at our school on Thursday 9th and Friday 10th of January 2014.
• 23 teachers returned the completed questionnaires. (One had only completed the first six – he/she probably didn’t realise there were more on the other side of the page!)
• Not all the teachers who were given questionnaires completed them.
The teacher must teach to the test since exam results affect students’ future choices.

Conclusion Although a small minority of the teaching
staff believes that we should keep total control over the students and stick rigidly to the syllabus, in general the teachers at our school are open to the idea of student autonomy and believe that students should be encouraged to follow their interests and explore their potential in ways that suit them. It is the duty of teachers, however, to always be there to support, monitor and guide them.
