ORGANIC & BIODYNAMIC WINES
Elisabetta ForadoriWinemaker
Foradori VineyardTrentino-Alto Adige
Organic and biodynamic are very similar; both are grown without chemicals and GMOs.However, biodynamic goes one step further. While organic agriculture will focus on replacing chemicals by natural products, Biodynamic will use preparations to nurture the soil that will help the plant produce its own energizing forces.
By increasing bacteria life in the soil, the winemaker provides the best possible environment for the plant to strengthen its vital energy which is one of the most important feature in a wine, not the alcohol degree.

Surgiva comes exclusively in glass bottles. It has quickly become synonymous with the elite as an exclusive tasting mineral water. It is king in top class restaurants in Italy and now Worldwide.
The name comes from the immaculate peaks of the Adamello Brenta Nature Reserve in the heart of Trentino, where it pours pristinely from a high altitude spring, close to Madonna di Campiglio.
Surgiva is on one of the lightest waters in the World. The very low levels of nitrates attest to the extraordinary purity at the source and its neutral taste is as enchanting as the natural landscape surrounding the spring. The latest chemical and bacterial analysis carried out using high tech American methods showed results of excellent purity. Thanks to its lightness, Surgiva is ideal for those who follow a healthy lifestyle and is recommended for people following a low salt diet and children.
Surgiva has been chosen by AIS (Italian Association of Sommerliers) as the official water for wine tasting events.

FRANCE WINEGROWING REGIONS
14
Did You Know? (Wine Facts):• The French consume 60 litres of wine per year which is more than any other country in the world.
• A third of all French wine produced is exported - is worth more than 10 billion euros a year and is increasing especially from Asian (including Australia) demand.
• 72% of the adult French population finds it difficult to understand French wine labels.
• Wine has been produced in France since about 600 BC when Greeks from Phocaea found-ed Massallia (today known as Marseille) and introduced winemaking.
ALSACE - AndlauDomaine Marc Kreydenweiss was established in Alsace, in 1650 and has been in the same family for thirteen generations — more than three and a half centuries.
In 1971, at age 23, Marc Kreydenweiss took over the family winery. Among his first innovations were a switch to organic farming and yield reduction through extensive pruning. Most importantly, in 1984, he began focusing on planting specific varietals matched to specific terroirs to capture the truest expression of each grape variety.
Domaine Marc KreydenweissL’âme de la terre
Over the years, Marc’s love for the soil grew into a love for the earth, and he began to champion the well-being of the planet and preservation of its natural resources. He found himself drawn to biodynamic viticulture, and the domaine began embracing biodynamic practices in 1989. By 1990, Marc had converted the estate to 100% biodynamic farming, a distinction shared by a small group of wineries worldwide.
With biodynamics, the grapes are organically cultivated, without pesticides or commercial fertilizers, and vineyard work is timed to the cycles of the sun, moon and stars. The vines are pruned very short to control yields and are cleaned of all extra shoots to allow good aeration and exposure to the sun. Pruning also ensures even spacing of grape bunches on each vine.

BORDEAUX - Medoc
Château La Tour de By - Built in 1825 over the ruins of a former wind-mill, By’s lighthouse became the guardian angel of the fishermen and sailors sailing in the dark or in the fog on the estuary. It stands on a hillock, 300 meters away from the Gironde and 15 meters above the water level.
Among the significant owners of that vineyard were Pierre Tizon, the seigneur of the fief, then the Comte de Grammont, M. de Lignac and his son-in-law, M. Rubichon who built today’s Château La Tour de By.
At the beginning of the XXth century, M. Julien Damoy, a successful delicatessen-grocer in Paris, bought this wine-estate which he used to visit very regularly. His son-in-law, Mr Chaumont, Burgundian by birth, then gets in charge of the vineyard until he sold it in 1961 to M. Kaskoreff, a member of Parliament.
Four years later, a handful of men repatriated from North Africa, MM, Lapalu, Cailloux and Pagès, looking for an attractive – in potential and price – estate, discovered La Tour de By and acquired it. They then regenerated this estate of the northern Medoc until 1999, when Marc Pages, an agricultural engineer from Tunis, and his children, became its owner. Over fourty years, this former pupil of the Ecole Coloniale of Agriculture in Tunis, drove this Cru Bourgeois into the very exclusive Union des Grands Crus.

Château Belgrave - Since 1979, we have been extremely privileged to manage this large, classic estate, which is amongst the finest in Médoc. This sig-nificant responsibility, continued source of investment and tireless, never truly as-suaged quest for perfection, brings with it the immense satisfaction of in someway expressing the character of the soils and revealing in our wines the refinement, depth and personality of this outstanding terroir.
Situated at the extremities of the St-Julien appellation, separated from its neigh-bour Château Lagrange by only a stream, Château Belgrave is one of the oldest Cru vineyards in the Médoc.

Château la Garde - The origins of the Château date back to the 18th cen-tury, when Domaine de “Lagarde” already featured on the “carte de Cassini”, the first general map of France drawn by the Cassini family in 1756. The picturesque Charterhouse, built in 1732, was at that time surrounded by valleys and woods.
Château La Garde was one of the first properties to embrace integrated agricul-ture, the production of premium quality grapes with total respect for the environ-ment and for mankind.

Beau Mayne - Dourthe created Beau Mayne in 1979, a round, nicely-balanced Bordeaux with the emphasis on lovely ripe fruit. Beau Mayne is the result of an increasingly strict selection process conducted by oenologists who all have perfect knowledge of the Bordeaux terroirs.
From several hundred batches, only the best are selected, those whose supple tannins and rich fruit render them worthy of a place in the Beau Mayne cuvée. The blend then made to strike the right balance between rich, com-plex fruit and particularly mellow tannins before the wine is matured in vats and then bottles to put the finishing touch to it.

The nine estates making up Dourthe today, have all been raised to the pinnacle of their respective appellations, while the continued success of Dourthe No 1 since its launch reflects, the creation of Essence de Dourthe, the “Super Bordeaux”, is wit-ness to the daring spirit of the house

BURGUNDY - Chablis
Domaine de la Cornasse - Originating from a long line of wine growers, the Geoffroy sisters own and manage several hectares of vineyards in Beine, a village in the heart of the Chablis wine region. Around 6 hectares of vineyards have been cultivated for decades, committed to producing Chablis in the longstanding tradition of the family.
The family winery is regarded locally as one of the classic Chablisenne producers. Their vineyards rest on Kimmeridgian soil--the ancient bed of of the Atlantic Ocean that is now clay/limestone with a heavy, nutri-ent blessed, mixture of fossilized oysters, fish skeletons and other sea life.

This is an exceptional terroir thanks to being on top of a hill, which benefits from a limestone-clay soil that forces the vine roots to descend deep into the bedrock to obtain the nutrients they need. The typicity of the soil in Saint Romain gives minerality, elegance and freshness to the grapes.

Roger’s son Michel began working in the vineyards in the late 1980’s and took over elevage in the mid 1990’s. Under Michel’s management, the Caillot estate practices organic agriculture. In the cellar, Michel is a fanatic for quality and practices natural winemaking. Fermentation is accomplished with whole clusters and natural, wild yeasts. The winery has 3 levels to facilitate all movement of wine by gravity. The wines are kept on their lies as long as possible and racked once before bottling. The whites are fined, but not filtered, and aged in 10-30% new barrels except for the 1er and grand cru which see 50-70% new barrels. The reds are not fined or filtered and everything is bottled by hand. Interesting to note, the cellar is so cold that primary fermentation lasts until April and malolactic fermentation the next summer. As a result, the wines are released two years after most of the other estates.

BURGUNDY - Maconnais
Domaine de la Bongran consists of 15 hectares spread throughout the foot of the Quintaine hills in the Maconnais.
A family estate since at least the 15th century, its vineyards, devoted essentially to Chardonnay, have been passed on from generation to generation to vinegrowers and stone masons. The name of the area “Bongran” originally comes from “bongrain” (a wine with good origins comes from a good grain).
Jean Thevenet, the final link of the chain since 1972, together with his son, crafts exceptional wines on a chalky terroir which is said to be the secret of the Great White Wines of the Mâconnais. Jean Thevenet is inspired by the traditional methods passed on by his father, drawn from his series of lectures, “The harvests in the Mâconnais region of Clesse during the 19th century”.

CHAMPAGNE - Oger
Champagne Chapuy - Champagne CHAPUY is a Family Estate of 8 ha of vineyards . The majority of them are planted in the “Côte des Blancs” with Chardonnay grape variety, which allows to produce a fine and light Blanc de Blancs Champagne, very typical of this region.
Among them, 3 ha belong to the famous “Grand Cru” village of Oger. Other family plots, located in the “Côteaux Sud d’Épernay” and planted with Pi-not Noir and Pinot Meunier grape varieties (3ha), are used to produce the blended Champagnes, more fruity and mellow.
CHAPUY Family is inextricably linked with Oger’s history because one of its ancestors was mayor of the village just after the French Revolution. Wine-growing is stuck in the family tradition since more than a century, but Serge CHAPUY was the actual brand creator and started to commercialize Champagne in 1952.
His son Arnold ,the actual Chairman, decided in 1981 to succeed his father at the head of the Family Estate. He was joined by his daughter Elodie in 2003 , who cares about the development of the brand overseas. Aurore, the younger daughter of the CHAPUY’s family is in charge of the vineyards farming and winemaking since 2008.

CHAMPAGNE - Oeuilly
Champagne Tarlant is a small family winery in the town of Oeuilly on the left bank of the Marne. Jean-Mary Tarlant and his son Benoît continue a fam-ily tradition that dates back to 1687. Currently the Estate is directed by the twelfth generation, represented by Benoît and Melanie, children of Jean-Mary Tarlant, who is chairman.
Today they are among the most innovative of growers, maturing most of their base wines in oak barrels and producing some fascinating light dosage champagnes including a Zéro. Benoît is the winemaker and advocates a natural approach to viticulture (using herbal infusions in the vineyard) and winemaking. His wines do not undergo malolactic fermentation, have known wood and are either very lightly dosed or “natural” (no dosage with sugar).

LOIRE VALLEY - Pouilly-Fume
Domaine Alain Cailbourdin was created in 1980 by Alain Cailbourdin and today it is comprised of 20 hectares (approximately 40 acres) of vines planted in some of the best Pouilly-Fumé slopes. About half of the vines are “vieilles vignes” or old vines; the other half are vines planted since 1980. Grapes grown on the different slopes are vinified separately, thus permitting the production of four different cuvées, each representing a distinctive terroir and aromatic expression
Their constant concern for quality is evident throughout the entire winemaking process, from the vineyard to the cellar. Their guiding principle is to bring forth the quality and diversity of the terroir.
A wine can only be great if it has the mineral support of a quality terroir. The art of the winemaking profession consists of giving the grapes all the possible chances to reveal their qualities.

LOIRE VALLEY - Vouvray / Bourgueil
Domaine Catherine et Pierre Breton - The Bretons farm eleven hectares of vines just east of Bourgueil in the village of Restigné. They produce Chinon and Bourgueil, as well as a bit of Vouvray, creating honest wines for both early consumption and longer aging.
The Bretons first introduced biodynamic practices into their viticulture in 1994, just after receiving their organic certification in 1991. Recently, they started thethree-year process of seeking biodynamic certification. In fact, they have become international icons for the natural wine movement in an area where the climate and soil can make organic viticulture difficult.
The Bretons farm vineyards on varied soil types, including gravel, limestone, clay, schist, and yellow tuffeau. Their wines are made primarily from Cabernet Franc (known in the Loire, curiously, as “Breton”) with small quantities of Chenin Blanc for their Vouvray. Though Pierre is the principal cellar master, Catherine makes a series of cuvées under the label “La Dilettante,” or the Dabbler.

RHONE VALLEYDomaine Yves Cuilleron - Yves Cuilleron is something of a Rhône winemaking legend. He is described by Wine Spectator as “the leader of Condrieu’s new generation of winemakers.” Yves represents the 4th generation of Cuilleron vignerons although he initially was studying mechanical engineering at university.
The Cuilleron family Domaine, located in the hamlet of Verlieu (part of the town of Chavanay), was found-ed several generations ago in 1920. Yves Cuilleron’s grandfather was the first to bottle wine for commer-cial purposes in 1947. Yves assumed full ownership and direction of the domaine in 1987 and, since that time, has built an entirely new facility while at the same time acquiring additional vineyards.

RHONE VALLEY - Costieres de Nimes
Marc Kreydenweiss was established in Alsace, in 1650 and has been in the same family for thirteen generations
In 1999, the purchase of the Perrières Estate in Manduel (Gard) represent-ed the start of a new adventure for Kreydenweiss family and the entire team at the Domaine d’Andlau. The region of Nîmes, with its climate, soil and terroir, quickly emerged as the ideal place to satisfy their passion for red wine and develop the grape varieties of the Midi, thanks to their experience in Alsace.

PROVENCE - Cotes de Provence
LANGUEDOC ROUSSILLON - Faugeres
Château de Berne is situated in the Haut Var area (northern part of the Var), characterized by a continental climate. This area’s cool evenings ensure slow and optimal grape ripening. Their Rosé wines mature late and are well-structured with plenty of body.
Measuring 290 acres, Château de Berne’s vine plots are set on a chalky terroir. They are mainly South-facing and sheltered by 1,500 acres of forests. This varied soil and climate offers optimal growing conditions for their grapes.
Domaine de Cébène - A vineyard with a sense of place. Brigitte Chevalier came to Faugères to make wine in her own way. In a short space of time, her organically farmed estate of 11 hectares has established itself as a leader within its chosen appellation and a highly rated name within South of France winemaking circles.
Brigitte hunted down and bought the parcels that met her objectives, choosing them on the basis of the quality of their terroir and their grape varieties, their exposure (north-facing, for balanced wines) and alti-tude (300 metres, in the foothills of the Massif Central), in Faugères, in the heart of the Haut-Languedoc Parc Naturel.

Château Puech Haut - Gérard Bru, owner of the Puech-Haut es-tate, is a man of great personal resources. Starting with a land devoid of any grapes, he has built what is now one of the largest vineyards in the region, and at its heart was born the “Château Puech-Haut”, built from the stones of the old Prefecture of Montpellier. This was originally a bourgeois residence built in Italian style between the 17th and 18th centuries, and it was slated for demolition. Gérard Bru bought the structure and then transplanted it stone

SOUTH WEST - Marmandais
Élian Da Ros - The Côtes du Marmandais is one of those little known regions in France that rarely makes a splash in the world of wine. In fact, until recently, Marmande was more famous for tomatoes than its typically mediocre wines. But thanks to vigneron Elian da Ros, the reputation of this corner of Southwest France is turning around!
His first vintage dates back to only 1998, and yet, it figures as a fast pace change maker not only for his appellation, but for the entire region. Thanks to his instinct, he focused on the local native grape Arbouriou, and has propelled the Côtes du Marmandais appellation on the international scene.

TRENTINO-ALTO ADIGE - MezzolombardoElisabetta Foradori - In 1985, Elisabetta Foradori – supported by her mother Gabriella – started her research on Teroldego grape vari-ety. At the time it seemed as if it had lost all its qualitative potential as well as its genetic diversity. But the young winemaker, who had unexpectedly stepped into the shoes of her father Roberto when he died prematurely, soon recognized the boundless potential of this ancient variety and set out to overcome any obstacle to bring its qualities back to light. An essential element of her effort was to recover the variety’s biodiversity through simple mass selection to preserve and cherish the diversity existing at the time. This effort was followed by the continuous replanting of the vineyards with the plants she selected thus enabling her to assess their stability and value. Finally, she scoured the registers of public properties, looked up the records of church estates, perused tax records, and soaked up the knowledge of centuries to reconstruct the variety’s development in the course of history.
After almost twenty years of painstaking work, the Teroldego has regained a qualitatively well defined place among Italy’s indigenous grape varieties. The vineyards around the Foradori estate is for wine lovers a sort of viticultural Garden of Eden where the huge mosaic of the variety’s diversity is reconstructed.

VENETO - Valdobbiadene
Nino Franco - Antonio Franco founded the “Cantine Franco” Winery in Valdobbiadene in 1919. Valdobbiadene is located at the foot of the Prealps, in the Venetian region, and is famous for the Prosecco vine and wine production. This winery is proud to be one of the oldest in Valdobbiadene, located in the town center, not far away from the countryside and the vineyards.
Thanks to a careful and wise management, the estate has been growing and evolving throughout four generations of producers. Antonio founded it, Nino expanded it, Primo improved the company performance and Silvia is the future of the brand.
In 1982, when Primo took over management, he began to travel and to successfully export the wines in Europe as well as in the Americas and the Far East. At the same time he invested in the production process in order to make high quality wines, eliminating all those wines that were atypical for the area. He also started to monitor closely the grape cultivation with the aim of achieving high quality from the raw material level to the final product.
Primo Franco was one of the first pioneers to export the Prosecco and to introduce a different sparkling wine than Champagne into the international market.

VENETO - Soave
Dario, Leonildo & Andrea Pieropan
Pieropan - For many years now, the world of wine has looked to Pieropan as benchmark winery, expressing their fine appellation’s ultimate quality. Own-ers Nino and Teresita Pieropan run it to the highest and strictest standards, with impassioned competence and a genuine love for their profession. Their profound commitment to the terroir and tradition of Valpolicella is the Pieropan’s family herit-age, and the philosophy behind this operation.Four generations have worked at the Pieropan family estate since its foundation in 1890, each contribut-ing something different depending on their generation, their knowledge and their entrepreneurial spirit. Viticulture and vinification began with Leonildo, a doctor in the small town of Soave, who, driven by his understanding of biology and chemistry began working in the family vineyards and cellars.
His sons, Fausto and Gustavo continued his work with great passion, but the turning point for the estate came with Leonildo, grandson of the founder who, with the force of his sense of vocation, carved out his own style. A belief in the central importance of the vine, an unceasing pursuit of quality and innovative winemaking processes are the key charactestics of the Pieropan identity.

Inaugurated by the inspired and enthusiastic Cesare Trezza di Musella, he introduced innovative sys-tems for planting and growing vineyards, thus initiating what was to become a major activity for the Te-nuta. The winery owns three vineyards on three different hills, rich in forest and natural oasis. The variety of soil composition and the favourable exposition mainly to West guarantee an interesting combination.
Two words that imply a way of working, observe and experience the land. A philosophy of life to ap-preciate the harmony of a cultivated field, the succession of the seasons and time. Their wines follow an ambitious project, not only because biodynamic, but because we believe that now is the time for the Valpolicella to further exploit its territorial potential, free from market constraints in order to better express all their innate class in purity and taste.

FRIULI-VENEZIA GIULIA - San Lorenzo
Lis Neris is located in the centre of the most famous viticultural area of Friuli, San Lorenzo village, between the Slovenian border in the North and the right bank of the Isonzo river in the South.
More than 50 hectares of vineyards are planted in the most beautiful part of a small plateau of calcareous gravel, that had been carried down by water after the glaciers of the Eastern Alps melted during the Quaternary period. The climate favours a slow ripening, resulting in fleshier, better balanced grapes with valuable flavours and tastes.

TUSCANY - Montalcino
Poggio Antico is located in Montalcino, a small town in Tuscany about fifty kilometers south of Siena. The earliest written records of the estate date from the begin-ning of the 19th century, when the present boundaries were marked. At that time, the estate consisted of woodland, grassland, and three stone houses. The development of Poggio Antico started in the late 1970s, when electricity was brought in, vineyards were planted, and construction of the wine cellar began.
One of the highest altitude estates in Tuscany, Poggio is nestled high in the hills of Montalcino and com-prises about 200 hectares of beautiful woods, fields, olive gardens and vineyards. Brushed by steady breezes and bathed in sunlight, its natural climate provides optimum growing conditions for their high quality grapes. The soil is rocky and calcerous, which makes for good drainage. Cover crops are used to aid moisture retention, increase biodiversity and regenerate the soil. As of 2017, the winery has managed using organic practices, and are in the process towards an organic certification.

TUSCANYTenuta di Arceno - Tenuta di Arceno is quintessential Tuscany. Our property covers 1,000 hectares (2,500 acres) of rolling hills, lush green forests, ancient Cypress trees, sun-drenched fields, olive groves, vineyards and medieval stone castles. It’s not unusual to see wild boar roaming the property. The wines they produce are every bit asimpressive as their origin. While clearly Tuscan in lineage, they possess a level of richness, concentra-tion and character that is comparable to the world’s finest. When wine entrepreneur Jess Jackson and Vigneron Pierre Seillan first visited Tenuta di Arceno in 1994, they immediately recognized the potential of this historic estate. Over the next two decades, our team replanted the vineyards into tiny micro-crus, updated the winery and elevated the viticulture and winemaking practices to first-class standards. To-day, Tenuta di Arceno is widely considered one of the premier estates in the Chianti Classico region.
Arcanum is the pinnacle of the expression of our Bordeaux Varieties planted on the property. This Super-Tuscan represents the great potential of the terroir in Tuscany via 3 different wines ‘Il Fauno’, ‘Valadorna’ & ‘Arcanum’. The Small Production and high rewards by critics make it a very special gem, hard to find.

MONTEPULCIANOPoderi Boscarelli - The story began in 1962 with founder Egidio Cor-radi’s dream of producing a noble wine that exalts the aromas and flavors of his native land while imparting the elegance he loved. Born into an old Poliziana family in the Montepulciano region of the Siena countryside, his infinite passion for wine and deep knowledge of his home region induced him to buy two semi-abandoned small farms in Cervognano of Montepulciano, a stunning corner of old Etruscan Tuscany. The ancient soils had long been cultivated in the traditional way with different annual crops and small vineyards. Egidio’s dream and vision were embraced and invigorated by his daughter Paola and her husband Ippolito De Ferrari. Driven by their strong determination and dedication, they started Poderi Boscarelli in the ’60s. The development that followed brought renewed life to the age-old farming estate as Paola and Ippolito planted their first specialized vineyards at a density of 3,500 plants per hectare.

SARDINIA
Sella & Mosca - A jewel in the Mediterranean, Sardinia is a rustic and enchantingly beautiful island with extreme geography and vinous diversity to tempt travelers and wine enthusiasts alike. Mr. Sella and Mr. Mosca fell in love with this land over a century ago and established Sella & Mosca, one of Italy’s most renowned wine estates.
Il Meridione - Set up in 2003, Adria Vini is a winemaking venture jointly owned by Boutinot and Araldica Vini Piemontesi, the leading co-operative in Piemonte. All areas of production, from grape selection through to vinification, maturation, blending and bottling are meticulously overseen by Araldica’s Clau-dio Manera and Lella Burdese. Working closely with growers and cooperatives, their aim is to produce a range of authentic, well-priced wines from local grape varieties.
The mainstay of white wine production is Pinot Grigio, sourced from the Pavia region south of Milan, Friuli and the Veneto. New projects in the Veneto and Sicily from the 2008 vintage see the addition of Prosecco, Grillo and Catarratto. The reds come from mature, low yielding vineyards in Sicily, Puglia and Abruzzo, the source of some of Europe’s most undervalued and characterful wines.

SICILY - Vittoria
Azienda Agricola COS - COS is an exciting natural winery in the Vittoria region of Sicily. Located in the south east corner of the island, Vittoria is the home to the only Sicilian DOCG, Cerasuaolo di Vittoria, which brings together the Nero d’Avola and Frappato varieties to make a really elegant, fresh, expressive red.
COS began life when three school friends from Vittoria, Giambattista Cilia, Giusto Occhipinti and Pinuccia Strano, decided to start playing with grapes from their parents’ vineyards in 1980. Things grew, and after an ill-advised flirtation with new barriques, they realized that their terroirs were giving them something special, and that it the grapes needed to be handled naturally in the cellar.

BIERZO - Corullon
Descendientes de J. Palacios - Palacios with his nephew Ricardo Perez (who also spent time in Bordeaux) estab-lished Descendientes de J. Palacios in 1998 in the village of Vil-lafranca del Bierzo. They named the estate in honour of Alvaro’s father who passed away in 2000.
A unique conjunction of history, spirituality and emplacement exuded a powerful attraction over Ricardo Pérez and Alvaro Palacios. They arrived in Corullón in 1999, motivated by the idea of exploiting its wine-growing possibilities. Following the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, from the 11th century religious orders from all over Europe were established in the region. They brought with them a new type of vine of Atlantic stock, which some time later would be known as Mencía.The estate’s vineyards are located in the municipality of Corullón, in the mountains to the west of Bierzo: some 30 hectares cover-ing a constellation of minute plots of old vines on steep, rocky slate soils.
PRIORAT - Gratallops
Alvaro Palacios - One of nine children born to the owners of Rioja’s respected Palacios Remondo, Alvaro studied enology in Bordeaux, while working under Jean-Pierre Moueix at Ch. Pétrus. He credits his tenure at Pétrus for much of his winemaking philosophy and for showing him “the importance of great wines.” Alvaro could have returned to the security of his family’s domaine. Instead, he was drawn to remote and wildly beautiful Priorat, 60 miles from Barcelona, which had been one of Spain’s important pre-Phylloxera wine regions. With its unique terroir of steep hills and terraces Alvaro believed that here he could make a wine that was like a cross between Pétrus and Grange.

Bodegas Palacios Remondo is based in Alfaro in the Rioja Baja. This old family firm has been revitalised by the arrival of Alvaro Palacios who has already made his name, starting from scratch, with his extraordinary Priorato wines. He has since returned to the family property in Rioja Baja, and in a very short space of time, has decreased production by 60% and increased quality by a far higher factor. The Palacios estate is of 240 hectares, still quite high up at about 550m in the foothills of the Yerga mountain range.
It’s in the east, in the province of Alfaro. Soils are coarse clay/chalk, stony and poor. Rainfall low at 360mm. The project is to reflect soil minerality in the wine, avoid over-cooked fruit character and retain a sense of lively fresh elegance.

PRIORAT - Bellmunt del Priorat
Mas d'en Gil is a combination of nature and human activity going back centuries. Over the last 150 years, this has culminated in the passion shared by three families who have consecutively owned the estate. Today, this dream of bottling the earth has become reality in the shape of wines, olive oil and bit-tersweet vinegar made at Mas d’en Gil. These products express the respect, hard work and surroundings of place in the heart of the Priorat. Located at 350m above sea level, Mas d'en Gil covers an extension of 125 hectares of vineyards, olive groves, almond groves, hazel groves, cereal crops and Mediterranean woodland. Spread over five valleys with differentiating microclimates and terroirs, the estate is a scale model of the abrupt Priorat landscape, one of the greatest wine growing regions in the world.

Bodegas Elias Mora - Founded in 2000, ELIAS MORA WINERY was created by a youthful team destined to follow a path which has led them to be one of the best models of traditional winemaking in Spain.
Situated between the Duero and Hornija Rivers, our existing vineyards originally belonged to a man called Elias Mora, and hence the name of the wine.
The soil is comprised of large pebbles over a bed of Pliocene limestone, which is low in organic content. The extreme continental climate compounded with the scarsity of rainfall (400 mm.) improves the quality of the Tinta de Toro grape. It is ideally suited for this terrain and boasts hundreds of years of viniculture.
Phylloxera did not affect Tinta de Toro grape of this region, so the vines are authentic without the use of American root stock.
The vineyards are cultivated in a traditional way, this coupled with climatic conditions, results in low yields, a factor that is entirely desirable to achieve top quality wines. Wines, are the result of the essence of the vineyard that resists extreme drought conditions. It also allows one to appreciate the subtle differences between one vintage and another.

RUEDA - ValladolidBelondrade is a French-owned partnership based in the town of La Seca, near Valladolid, in the wine appellation of Rueda. CONCA DE BARBERA - Montsant
Cara Nord - Cara Nord was created by 3 people, joined for more than 20 years by their friendship and their passion for wine: Tomas Cusine, Xavier Cep-ero and Eric Solomon. They had many years of experience in the wine industry, and in March 2012 they decided to start a winemaking project together. They all had long been attracted to the majesty of the North Face of the Sierra de Prades
and its magnificent climate, land and history of quality winemaking. It is an environment classified of great Geological Interest and protected by the Natural Park of the Forest of Poblet. From experienced they knew the potential of the grapes grown in the Prades Mountains when it came to making good wines: the excellence seen in the DO Priorat, the reliability of D.O. Montsant, and the creativity of the DO Costers del Segre all originate from the same mountain range.

In 1877, Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, owner of the largest winemaking estate in the Douro, purchased 300 hectares of virgin land at auction from the Vila Nova Foz Côa municipality. Her dream was to create a model vineyard from nothing.
DOURONiepoort - When the Niepoort family moved from Holland to the Douro region of Portugal in 1842, the rise of one of the great Port houses of Oporto began. And in 1997, as the fifth generation to make fortified wines for the family business, Dirk Niepoort began a brand new rise. Considered a true Renaissance man, Dirk continues to make Port using the same traditional methods as his ancestors

AUSTRIA WINEGROWING REGIONS
Did You Know? (Wine Facts):• Certainly you’ve heard of Grüner Veltliner - Austria’s flagship white wine. It’s sorta, kinda like a hearty Riesling with citrus twist and dash of pepper. However, did you know there are two mutant clones of this grape? One is Roter Veltliner and the other is Brauner Veltliner.
• As a historic part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, Hungary’s Tokaji was the spotlight grabbing sweet wine when it came to Austrian wein. However, Austria has its very own dessert wine destination - Burgenland. Specifically the area around Neusiedler is quite well known.
• The magic words for wine drinkers in Vienna are ein Achtel (an eighth of a liter), which is the most common serving size in Vienna.

SONOMA COUNTYBuena Vista - Before there were vineyards in every valley north of San Francisco, before Napa and Sonoma were household names, before there was a California wine world at all, there was Buena Vista. Founded in 1857, Buena Vista is California’s first premium winery, and its history is as colorful as it is proud. Today, the legend is being re-born under the vision of Jean-
Charles Boisset. Buena Vista Winery is located in the northeast part of Sonoma. Agoston Haraszthy came over from Europe in search of “purple gold” in 1840. He ultimately settled in Sonoma, where he founded Buena Vista Winery in 1857. Despite his abrupt death in 1869 in an alligator-infested river in the jungles of Nicaragua and following the challenges of the depression, prohibition, and phylloxera infesta-tion; his beloved Buena Vista Winery has not only endured but also prospered.

CHILE WINEGROWING REGIONS
Did You Know? (Wine Facts):• Chile is a virtual grape growing paradise. The Andes mountains to the East, the Pacific to the West, a desert to the North, and Anatartica to the south makes the ideal grape growing climate.
• A common regional term used on wine from Chile is Central Valley. This is not a specific region, but a reference to the valley that runs north to south through the majority of the wine-growing area, with the Andes to the east and the (much lower-lying) coastal range of moun-tains to the west.
• Cabernet Sauvignon dominates Chile’s vineyards, accounting for almost one-third of all varieties grown. Sauvignon Blanc is a distant second, followed closely by Merlot, Chardonnay and Carménère.

LIMARI VALLEY
Tabalí was one of the first wineries to settle in the Limarí Valley. It´s one of the most promising valleys of the country and it´s located in the North of Chile. The proximity to the Atacama Desert and to the Pacific Ocean, as well as the presence of limestone soils, brings an exceptional and unique terroir, ideal for the production of high quality wines.
Set in the Limarí Valley and like nowhere else in Chile, Tabalí`s vineyards compromise 180 hás of very chalky soil, together with clay and stones. The perfect mix of sun and soil to produce wines of great character and minerality-disctintive, assertive, cool-climate Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah and Pinot Noir.
The winery was designed and constructed to recall the Molle Culture way of life. This ancient culture of the North of Chile, used to live at the bottom of the ravines to protect themselves from the heat and provide them with water, vegetation and shade. Constructed in the ravine, the winery integrates the stunning landscape and natural surroundings, the steel casks are cut against the hills and their vegetation.

MAIPO VALLEYCousiño Macul - Founded in 1856, Cousiño-Macul is the only 19th century winery in Chile that remains in the hands of the original founding family. All Cousiño-Macul reserve wines are estate grown, vinted and bot-tled. After seven generations and over 150 years, Cousiño-Macul’s mission rings clear — to produce world-class wines that are unmistakably Chilean, carrying the distinctive character of the Maipo Valley.
In 1994, the capital city of Santiago had expanded to the point of completely surrounding the original Macul estate in the southeast of the city, so the search for an additional single estate vineyard location began. In May 1996, the Cousiño family bought 750 acres of land in Buin, an agriculturally rich subregion of the Maipo Valley, about 20 miles southeast of Santiago. The Buin estate met the Cousiños’ ambitious criteria of soil composition, climate and proximity to the Andes Mountains.
Few wine producers have the opportunity to make a completely new start, incorporating the best of their age-old experience and the most contemporary technology available. As technology continues to advance in the vineyards and wineries around the world, Cousiño Macul has seized this opportunity to innovate while staying true to the most important part of their long history.

MENDOZA - Uco Valley
Clos de los Siete is the result of a venture undertaken by a group of French winegrowers. It is located at the foot the Andes mountain range, in the heart of the Uco Valley, at the district of Vista Flores, Tunuyán. Their vine-yards spread across 850 hectares (2100 acres) at an altitude of 1,000-1,200 masl. In 1998, oenologist Michel Rolland and Jean-Michel Arcaute decided to go into business. The proposition involved Argentina - a country that of-fered space, the possibility to plant without restriction and the potential to produce a quality wine from fine soil at an excellent price.

MARGARET RIVERMiles from Nowhere - A Margaret River Winery, rated 5 star by James Halliday. “Miles from nowhere” is all about a passion for winemaking; with this passion, the winery gathered little pockets of exceptional land and vineyards, scattered across the Margaret River region of Western Australia and based their winemaking on a property in Cowaramup.
In their winemaking, they passionately crafted wine to bring some of the “terroir”, the relaxed time and space, and the “palate” of the region into the wine glass. The focus is to produce serious wine in a serious package, yet retain the essential ingredients of excitement, fun and enjoyment.
Their winemakers are Oenologist Rory Clifton-Parks and, a well-known industry veteran Franklin Tate. The Parks & Tate team bring extensive depth, knowledge and passion to Miles from nowhere. Franklin Tate, having guided his family’s Margaret River winemaking business to iconic status. Franklin Tate always wanted to do something really special, unique and distinct, that from the ground up truly expressed what was unique about the ‘terroirs’ of Margaret River.

BAROSSA VALLEYTomfoolery The Tomfoolery winemaking philosophy is simple: small parcels of fruit, hand crafted through a simple and relatively non-interven-tional approach, with the aim to truly reflect the individual characteristics of the vineyard and variety. The wines that we produce are true to their variety, balanced and classic in nature – they will stand the test of time if patiently cellared.
The Tomfoolery adventure began in the sweltering heat of the 2004 harvest between best mates Ben Chipman and Toby Yap, and a tonne of old vine Shiraz. The fruit was picked with some generous as-sistance from friends, then destemmed and basket pressed to produce the first ‘Artful Dodger’ Shiraz. Over the following vintages the boys expanded their production to include Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Mataro, Tempranillo and Pinot Noir.
“The irreverence of the name Tomfoolery belies a serious intent to produce wines of the Barossa Valley with a deft touch, respect for old vine culture and an eye on the pursuit of ultimate drinkability. These are wines that celebrate texture and expression over the supreme notion of balance, preferring to reflect vineyard character over winemaking artifice. The enjoyment factor is high with these wines, the explora-tion a reward.” - Mike Bennie, The Wine Front
