RESTOREDIN CHRIST

A SERIES OF SERVICES FOR LENTat St. Matthews

Wednesdays March 5 - April 9 at 6:30 p.m.Soup Supper from 5:15 p.m. - 6:15 p.m.

e season of Lent is a time for us to face together the brokenness of our lives and our world, and then turn that brokenness over to Christ so that we can be restored by him through the cross. Written by seminary professor Joel Biermann, each service in this stirring series focuses on a certain event in the Lenten story and takes a good, hard look at a broken element from that particular story. Coming to an understanding of how each of these broken elements leads to restoration in Christ is key to under-standing what it ultimately means to live today as new creations in Christ.

Beginning Wednesday, March 5 at 5:30 p.m.e Daniel Plan at St. MatthewsGod designed our bodies to be healthy providing everything we need to thrive and live abundantly. And with assistance from medical and tness experts, Pastor Rick Warren and thousands of people from his congregation at Saddleback Church started a journey to transform their lives. e result: 15,000 people lost over 260,000 pounds in the rst year. But the changes in people’s lives went far beyond the pounds they lost.

THE

Feast on Something Bigger than a Fade Daniel Plan: 40 Days to a Healthier Life by Rick Warren, Dr. Daniel Amen, and Dr. Mark Hyman is far more than a diet plan. It is an appetizing approach to achieving a healthy lifestyle where people

are encouraged to get healthier together by optimizing the key ve essentials of faith, food, tness, focus, and friends.

Sessions include: Faith: Nurturing Your Soul Food: Enjoying God’s Abundance Fitness: Strengthening Your Body Focus: Renewing Your Mind Friends: Encouraging Each Other Living the Lifestyle

e Daniel Plan will be oered at St. Matthews on Wednesdays during Lent beginning March 5th from 5:30 p.m. to 6:20 p.m. just prior to the Lenten Service. Grab a bowl of soup and join

us in the basement for this 6 session DVD series facilitated by Pat Turonie and Gerry Paulson.

Books can be picked up at Walmart, Target, Barnes & Noble or on the internet.

SUMMER LEAGUE BASEBALLLittle League Registrations are open (grades 7 and 8) and will be done online again like last year (www.eskolittlelea-gue.com). We are again planning on having VFW(grades 8-10) and Legion(grades 10-12) squads. Registration and fees for the VFW and Legion will be handled through Mr. Haugen at a later time. The plan has been to make these teams an extension of the spring season - to make them com-petitive and fun. This means committing to being on the team. It also means better organization on our part. I can tell you we have been thinking about how to make the summer teams better and will be making some changes. Summer is a busy time. Please have a conversation with your son and discuss his and your commitment level. It’s not any fun for anyone when the team is constantly in flux due to everything else going on in the summer. Good spring baseball teams have committed summer teams. I can tell you the coaches will be committed this summer! If your son is serious about being a good baseball player he should participate and be a committed member of a summer team.

If you have any questions, please contact Ben Haguen at [email protected].

the wonderful learning opportunities offered at Winterquist Elementary School. Kindergarten Round-up packets have been mailed out. If you did not receive a round-up packet by now, please contact the school at 879-3361. Books Are Full of SurprisesAs you know February was “I Love to Read” month. This year’s theme was “Reading is Super.” Once again our Language Arts Committee did a fantastic job organizing this year’s activities and the students did a wonderful job of participating. The month’s activities included an opening ceremony, special dress up days, and time to drop everything and read. The final surprise is a secret and as I write this we are only days away from the big reveal which could be a cinematic experience!Student Drop-Off Area Please continue to use the two drop-off areas the district has provided for you. The first area is by the Community Education doors. We ask that you follow the car in front of you and keep traffic to one lane.

Cars are not allowed to park in the turnaround as this affects the flow of traffic. The second place is by the district office. The students can get out and walk on the sidewalks. Signs are posted along Highway 61 to assist you. We are not doing this to make parents’ lives difficult, but rather we are doing this to try and assist with student safety. Kids are not to be picked up after school where the buses are loading students.AttendanceAs stated in our student handbook, “EXCUSED ABSENCES - NOT SCHOOL RELATED—Must be verified within 24 hours by a parent or guardian for illness, medical appointments, religious instruction or observance which can only be held during the school day and for limited emergency situations.” We are participating in the Truancy Prevention Program for Carlton County. Our policy obligates us to notify the parent(s)/guardian(s) in writing when a student has compiled three unexcused absences or a combination of eight total excused and/or unexcused absences at any time during the school year. Excessive tardies falls under

the definition of truancy. Please review the attendance record on your child’s latest report card. Your child’s attendance at school is vitally important to their academic success.Cell PhonesCell phones fall under the category of nuisance devices. Any item or device that may disrupt, interrupt or detract in any way from the learning of another student(s) may be considered a nuisance. Nuisance items/devices may include but are not limited to: cell phones, pagers or other communication devices, skate boards, i-pods and electronic gadgets, playing or game cards, electronic games, etc. Such items/devices are not welcome at school and will be confiscated when discovered and brought to the elementary school office until the end of the school day. The parents of repeat offenders may be required to come to school to pick-up the confiscated item/device. The disciplinary action taken may include detention, suspension or expulsion.

The school district assumes NO RESPONSIBILITY for the loss of any confiscated item/devices.

Town of Thomson would like to pass on a reminder to all residents. The ordinance which regulates the parking of vehicles within the Town of Thomson states in Section 4 that “During the period from November 1 of each year to March 31 of the following year, no person, firm, or corporation shall park any motor vehicle on the roads, streets, alleys, boulevards, sidewalks, or public grounds within the corporate limits of the Township between the hours of four o’clock a.m. and seven o’clock a.m. It shall be the duty of the Police Department to cause any motor vehicle that is so parked between 4 o’clock a.m. and seven o’clock a.m. to be removed and impounded, and the motor vehicle shall not be released until the fees for towing and storage of the vehicle are paid.”

If you have any questions, please contact the Town Office at 879-9719. We appreciate your cooperation.

SNOW PLOWING REMINDERThe Town of Thomson reminds all snow removal operators/property owners that it is unlawful to deposit snow on or next to a public highway or street.

Minnesota law prohibits the plowing, blowing, shoveling or otherwise placing of snow onto public roadways. This includes the ditch and right-of-way area along the roadside.

This would include pushing the snow from your driveway across the street onto the right-of-way of a vacant lot. The snow from your driveway needs to remain on your property.

According to state law, violations are considered misdemeanors, but civil penalties also apply if the placement of snow creates a hazard such as a slippery area, frozen rut or bump that contributes to a motor vehicle or pedestrian crash. The civil liability can extend to both the property owner and the person who placed the snow.

Other hazards created by improper placement of snow on or near a public roadway include drainage problems, drifting, sight obstruction and safe accessibility. Special attention should be made to keep crosswalks, intersections, entrances and exits clean and unobstructed.

We appreciate your cooperation in this manner.
