Current Reality • Operating in the “High COVID Activity Level” on DOH Decision

Tree

• Examined current hybrid model proposed in July

• After watching and learning from districts locally and nationally we started asking ourselves,

“Is there another option that keeps students with their current teacher, maximizes what’s already in place, and minimizes further disruption to the student, family and teacher?”

“How could students continue learning together?”

“How could we develop a model where students engage in distance learning and in-person

learning at the same time?”

Agenda• Refresher on Current A/B Model• New idea to consider for hybrid learning for

Elementary and High School/Middle School • Strengths/Challenges of each model

• Resources needed• Next Steps

A Different Approach to Hybrid

Benefits :

• Teacher already knows students and families

• Consistency for students• Easier to pivot at an

undetermined time between hybrid and full time distance learning

• Eliminates need to shuffle students to different teachers

Challenges:

• Teacher must manage students in both the hybrid learning model and distance learning model at the same time

• Need long-term substitutes for staff members who take leave

• Transportation

Elementary AM/PM Model

December 2, 2020

Students in DLC and Links may have option to attend school all day.

Elementary AM/PM ModelStrengths:

• Students have daily contact with their current teacher

• Consistent, frequent, and personal feedback on learning

• Daily in person contact with peers• Less asynchronous work planning for

teachers • Student asynchronous work could be

simplified to include Lexia, DreamBox and paper materials

• Students have in person contact with counselors and learning specialists

Challenges:• Student desks and common areas

need cleaning between AM and PM cohorts

• Teacher exposure to all students each day (more for specialists)

• Transportation needs to run two complete district routes per day

• Schedule different than previously communicated, may impact childcare

Elementary AM/PM Model

Additional Considerations:• Students in distance learning attend AM class • Teacher would not be expected to have live camera on entire AM

session. Breaks would be built in for the at-home students.• Recess will not be built into the AM/PM model due to time• Need to determine lunch and breakfast service• Each elementary classroom has 15 chromebooks for in class use.

Students can keep their own Chromebook at home.

Elementary Minutes with Classroom TeacherAB/AB Model:

Early start school example:

8:25 AM - 3:10PM

6 hours 45 minutes

- 45 minute recess- 30 minute lunch- 45 minute specialist**

= 4 hours 45 minutes per day

x 2 days per week

TOTAL: 9 hours 30 minutes

AM/PM Model:

AM session early start school example:

8:25 AM - 10:45 AM

2 hours 20 minutes

x 4 days per week

TOTAL: 9 hours 20 minutes

**Specialists could do live Zoom sessions during asynchronous learning time

Secondary AB/AB ModelStrengths:

• Students attend school two full days, interact with current teachers and peers in person

• Students in distance learning keep current teachers

• In-person assessments possible to gauge learning supports

• Students have consistency with current teachers

Challenges:

• Students have no contact with teacher on asynchronous days unless time can be built into schedule

• Student desks/tables need to be cleaned during passing periods

• Lunch schedules• Teachers interacts with 75

students per day

December 2, 2020

Secondary AB/AB ModelAdditional Considerations:• Students in distance learning attend Tues/Thur periods 1-3 and

Wed/Fri periods 4-6• Teacher/students would not be expected to have live camera on

entire class period – Teacher starts class, gives instructions, answers questions, etc…– Once complete, distance learning students may log off

• 3rd party providers are over capacity at this time

RESOURCES

Page 18: Return to In-Person Learning Update€¦ · February 2nd (High School/Middle School)* Unknown number of staff who will take leave ... “How could we develop a model where students

December 2, 2020

Resources TECHNOLOGY:

• Need to purchase camera equipment for teacher to use while live Zooming for distance learning students

• All classrooms need working microphones for best live Zoom quality

STAFFING: • Long-term substitutes for all teachers who are taking leave • Minimum of 56 drivers to accommodate the elementary AM/PM schedule

and secondary AB/AB schedule. We currently have 43 drivers. This will still require double runs at 5 schools.

Page 19: Return to In-Person Learning Update€¦ · February 2nd (High School/Middle School)* Unknown number of staff who will take leave ... “How could we develop a model where students

Additional Information

• Monday Zoom office hours for all grade levels• Teachers would not be required to record and post lessons• If students are absent from in-person class or from Zoom time,

teachers would provide absent work like they do normally• Monday principal-directed and district-directed time given to

teachers for planning, assessing, responding to student emails and questions, etc... (2 hours total)

NEXT STEPS

December 2, 2020

Next Steps• Communicate with staff to determine who will commit to teaching

and supporting students in person• Secure long-term substitutes for staff who will take leave• Finalize bus routes and determine number of drivers needed to be

hired to fill vacancies• Purchase video technology needed to host live Zoom classes• Continue finalizing details of instructional schedules• Communicate to families if they are an A group or B group• Finalize health and safety protocols based on model• Finalize breakfast and lunch plans for students in all groups
