Time is approaching for the burst of activity, opportunity, and just plain fun that we all have come to expect of Reunion Weekend at Chestnut Hill College.

Everyone on campus will be ready on the first weekend in June — May 31-June 2 — to welcome you home to CHC.

It’s your time to get away and enjoy today’s CHC, to recall touching and humorous memories, and to share many wonderful experiences we all appreciate in common as CHC alums.

The weekend is packed with lots of opportunities to reconnect with one another and the College, to renew friendships, and to make a few new ones along the way.

Possibilities are endless.

We have lots of changes in store for you … while retaining some tried-and-true traditions, along with some tweaking here and there. We heard you and other classes say “more time to chat” on both evenings, and that’s what we offer. For those who want more, there’s more!

So, time’s approaching. It’s time to sit back, grab your favorite beverage, and read through your NOW … IS YOUR TIME: The Time of Your Life Reunion Weekend 2013 invitation booklet.

It’s time for fingers crossed, novenas offered, heavens bombarded for three days of picture-perfect weather!

It’s time to begin planning your special time home to CHC.

Welcoming you Home

4:00 – 5:15 HI! TEA WELCOME-BACK RECEPTION East Parlor, St. Joseph Hall

Is Friday afternoon tea in the Social Room a blast from your CHC past? If so, Miss Corcoran would never recognize the scene that awaits you as we raise the curtain on Reunion Weekend with 2013’s remake of a treasured Chestnut Hill College tradition. Say hello to one another as you sample specialty treats while enjoying a selection of iced, chai, and spirits-infused teas and punch. Hosted by the Office of Institutional Advancement staff and the Alumni Association Board of Directors. New Twist Since Your Last Reunion!

5:30 – 6:30 TIME TO LEARN ... LEARN ABOUT THE TIMES - PART I (Concurrent Sessions) All New Sessions

1. The Nostalgic Past (Session I): “So You Love Downton Abbey?” Explore Edwardian morés, customs, and lifestyle with associate professor Barbara Lonnquist. What’s an entailed property, anyway? Learn more about this colorful period prior to WWI. Leave with a list of suggested characters, novels, and authors you might also enjoy.

2. The Not So Long Ago (Session I): “JFK—Myths & Realities” Ever since Kennedy’s assassination in 1963, the general public has rated John F. Kennedy one of the nation’s top presidents. In contrast, American historians have placed Kennedy in the high average category. Professor David Contosta will discuss which position is myth and which is reality, and the reasons behind the disconnect in perceptions.

3. The Here & Now: “A Century of Getting High” Associate Professor of Psychology Meredith Kneavel will share a history of contributing social forces at work in framing societal views and laws governing the use of marijuana. Starting around the 1920s, after the end of Prohibition, the drug’s story through the 1960s and 1970s now becomes increasingly interesting as individual states begin to legalize its use. Join Professor Kneavel for an enlightening overview, which also includes the biology of how marijuana works in the body and compares it to the other Schedule I drugs (opiates/cocaine/crack). And the graphics will be awesome!

4. The Days Ahead: “Those Thorny Bioethical Issues” They’re right in front of us, generating debate, prompting heated argument, begging for answers that satisfy everyone. Associate Professor of Biology Joseph Kulkosky serves up an overview of just a few of the many biotechnology issues that will only increase in number and societal impact. Dr. K will discuss the lengthy time it takes to move a good drug to market, and he will raise the bioethical implications of genetically-modifying organisms, including humans; DNA profiling; cloning oneself, a loved one, or even a pet; embryo selection for a “better baby,” and more. He suggests that society needs to get a much clearer understanding of all of these fast-moving technologies that he says are screaming for legislative regulatory control. Along the way, he will incorporate valuable information on the function and regulatory regulations of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the EPA, and the FDA.

10:15 – 11:15 TIME TO LEARN ... LEARN ABOUT THE TIMES II - PART II (Concurrent Sessions) New, Additional Schedule This Year! New Sessions This Year!

5. The Nostalgic Past (Session II): “Gatsby, Once Again” Associate professor Suzanne del Gizzo takes a look at one of literature’s most compelling cast of characters, sure to be a hot topic as film director Baz Luhrmann’s remake opens in American theaters exactly three weeks before reunion. Thumb through your copy of The Great Gatsby, or come and learn about it for the first time; either way, you’ll leave with a new appreciation for F. Scott Fitzgerald’s celebrated novel of The American Dream, published 88 years ago, yet relevant today. In anticipating this fifth film adaptation of the Fitzgerald classic, Professor del Gizzo wrote an article in November 2009 for the online Bright Lights Film Journal in which she says: “I believe we are finally ready to tell the story of The Great Gatsby properly. Why? Due to the somewhat odd combination of our present economic crisis and advances in film technology. But precisely because we are ready — and because we may even really need to tell ourselves the story of Gatsby right now — there is a lot at stake in this adaptation.” Read her entire article at http://brightlightsfilm.com/66/66gatsby.php

6. The Not So Long Ago (Session II): “Vatican II & Women: Promises & Challenges”Professor of Religious Studies Marie Conn will surely pose some probing questions and comments as she reviews what was both expected and realized for women in the Church following the groundbreaking Vatican Council. Join Professor Conn, a Reunion Weekend favorite, for a visit to the Sixties and an overview of the results that rolled out in the decades since.

Reunion celebrants who do not register in advance for the Reunion Luncheon, but who attend as late registrations (received in the Alumni Relations office after May 18) — as well as “walk-ins” — cannot be guaranteed seating with their classes or their preferred entrée. Seating for late registrants will take place on an “as available” basis through May 23 and at a cost of $55. The same policy will be applied to “walk-ins.” Registration for Reunion Luncheon closes on May 23.

ANNUAL REUNION MEMORIAL MASSNew this year: All reunion-year alumni and accompanying families are welcome to celebrate the Annual Reunion Memorial Mass, now moved from Saturday morning to early evening. MINORS ON CAMPUSNew this year: the introduction of several activities specifically planned for children while reunion celebrants attend the 67th Annual Reunion Luncheon, Class Meetings, and other Saturday afternoon program-specific activities. In planning to bring minor children with you on Saturday, please be aware that the College’s Minors on Campus policy will be in effect. A minor, defined as an individual who is not registered as a student at Chestnut Hill College and who is under the age of 18, must be accompanied by a supervising adult at all times. This supervising adult is responsible for the minor’s conduct on campus. There must be one such adult accompanying every two minors visiting the campus. We look forward to welcoming your minor children to CHC and ask you to keep this policy in mind when registering for Saturday’s activities.

PHOTOGRAPHY/VIDEOChestnut Hill College hires two photographers during the weekend, one to record activities and events — “candids” — and one specifically for class pictures on Saturday. Your registration form includes a line for you to indicate your class picture order at $15 per picture, which will be mailed to you during the summer. The candids are used for CHC publications, web sites, fundraising materials, and other promotional applications. Please inform the Alumni Relations office in advance if you do not want to be photographed for these purposes or videotaped for The Oral History Project. We also ask you to repeat your instruction to the photographer in the event that you are inadvertently included in a group candid or crowd shot.

REUNION WEEKEND COSTS The prices charged for activities, events, and meals offset a portion of the costs for food, beverages, food service, housekeeping, entertainment, photography, valet parking, and other items and services offered throughout the weekend. We attempt to keep all fees reasonable so that as many alumni as possible can enjoy their return home to CHC. Reservations at $75 per night include bed & bath linens and full breakfast the following morning. Refunds are not available after May 23.

Plus, we’d like to count this as a reunion gift for you and include it in your class percentage totals.
