From the PrincipalLast term you may have heard or become aware that we had some filming done in the school. The purpose of this filming was to produce a series of short films depicting the educational journey at St Paul’s.

Four films have been produced which will focus on the IB Primary Years Programme, the IB Middle Years Programme, the IB Diploma Programme and the Higher School Certificate. For those families who have been part of our school community for many years, the International Baccalaureate is well known and understood, but for many who are considering a St Paul’s education for their children the IB is something quite unknown. We hope that these short films will be a helpful and useful explanation about the International Baccalaureate and also highlight how the Higher School Certificate works at St Paul’s.

The first of these short films focussing on the IB Primary Years Programme was released publically last week and the IB Middle Years Programme film was released this week. Senior Prefect Leadership CampThe newly appointed Senior School Prefects attended a three-day camp at Katoomba two weeks ago.

During the three days, the students looked at the many facets of leadership and considered ways of being a servant leader. I was delighted to visit the students on this camp and present a session about the school’s rich history, the leaders who have gone before them and to challenge them as to what they hoped their Prefect Body’s legacy be. The students had a marvellous time and have come back from this leadership camp with lots of great ideas for the next year. On behalf of the students, I thank Mr. Newton, Mr. Heath & Miss Paragalli for leading such a wonderful program.

2019 Calendar Dates This week the Senior Executive spent a day working on the calendar dates for 2019. We have scheduled our whole school events, musicals, camps, exams, parent teacher nights and carnivals.

As you can well imagine a school the size of ours with the huge co-curricular program we have, it takes quite a bit of work to get everything on our calendar. Over the next few weeks these events will be populated to feed out into our website and the my.stpauls calendar for our community. In the meantime, if you need to know the term dates for 2019 and 2020, these are live on the my.stpauls calendar. For your convenience you can access a summary of important dates by accessing Parent Services -> Secondary School - >Parent Information - > Term Dates.

Year 9, 2019 Information EveningIt was great to see so many of our current Year 8 students at Year 9, 2019 Information Evening last week.

The students enjoyed chatting with staff about the details and opportunities of the many and varied subjects on offer in Years 9 & 10 at St Paul's. If you have any questions about your child’s Year 9 subject selections, please contact Dr Mary Robyn.

Literacy Across the Curriculum ProjectWe are delighted with the “Literacy Across the Curriculum” initiative started in the Secondary School. All students from Years 7 to 12 are involved in the project, in some capacity.

The importance of literacy skills for students is well established. Our Year 10 Peer Reading Mentors have recently undergone training and are working with Year 7 students. These new Peer Reading Mentors were badged last Friday at the Principal’s Assembly. Our Peer Reading Mentor Program forms part of our whole school focus next year on ‘Literacy across the Curriculum’. “Literacy Across the Curriculum” will provide all students with opportunity to develop and grow in their literacy skills. Please contact either Mrs Emma Wynne-Jones, Head of English Faculty [email protected] or Mr Matthew Berg, Head of Learning Enrichment 7-12, matthew. [email protected] if you have any questions about the program for your children.

Staffing News Last week I received news that Mrs Galbraith will be retiring at the end of this year.

Mrs Galbraith has served St Paul’s with great passion and commitment and has had a long association with the school for over 30 years. She will be missed, but I am sure you will join me in congratulating her on an amazing life dedicated to children in schools. There will be an opportunity later in the year to farewell her more formally.

Parent and Teacher InterviewsBy now families should have received communication about the details for Term 3 Junior School Parent/Teacher interviews for grades Kindergarten to Year 6.

The interviews have been scheduled for Monday, 3 September 2018. Bookings can be made through my.stpauls.

Year 6 Gala DayA lot of fun was had by our students in the Junior School at the annual Year 6 Gala Day.

While a fundraiser, the Year 6 students learnt a lot about running a “business”, how to work as a group as well as marketing and calculating profit and loss. I am aware of many parents that supported the students throughout the process and made purchases for the children’s stall to facilitate the day – Thank you! I must also acknowledge Mrs Wotherspoon, MissHinrichsen and Mr Abela for coordinating the day and for thestaff in ensuring the day ran smoothly.

Student NewsDuring last weekend some of our Junior School students attended The City of Penrith Vocal Eisteddfod and they did really well.

Congratulations to:

• Tiffany-Rose Burchett - 1x first & 1x second

• Famke Cullan- 1x third

• Noah McMillan- 1x second

• Elizabeth Drayton- 2x first

Year 6 - FutsalOn Tuesday, 31 July 2018 , eight Year Six girls went to the State Championships for Futsal.

The girls played four games, winning two, drew one and lost one. They represented the school with pride and passion. They unfortunately didn’t make the quarter finals based on points for and against.

Congratulations to Isabella Robson, Isabella Moon, Corinda Mavin, Lexie Robson, Beau Zaccazan, Dominque Linfoot, Tara Seppelt and Lulu Duffy.

Thanks to Miss Bate and Mrs Patten who helped train the girls.

IB Diploma: Extended Essay topicsEach year our Year 12 International Baccalaureate Diploma students write a 4,000 word research essay. We publish these titles below to raise awareness of the range of topics investigated by these students. Students must develop their own research question and work with a supervisor who assists them in the research and writing process over the three school terms that it takes to move from the idea to the completed essay. The essays are submitted to the IB and are marked with students receiving an A-E grade. This, with Theory of Knowledge grades, contribute to a maximum of three bonus points towards the IB Diploma. Our students have consistently averaged a B grade (with a large number of A’s) each year. We wish this year’s Year 12 students the same success as they submit their now complete essays.

Student Leadership 2018/2019Our newly inducted Senior Prefect group commenced their year of leadership by attending a three-day camp to Katoomba.

The camp commenced with all prefects being divided into groups according to the meal they were required to prepare for all 23 members of the team. They were then tasked with purchasing supplies for these meals within the confines of a strict budget at a local supermarket. After nine trolley loads and numerous looks from the perplexed checkout operator the task was complete. It was then off to the Katoomba Christian Conference Centre for several team building games.

Over the course of the three days the prefects were involved in a variety of sessions highlighting different aspects of leadership, with an emphasis on servant leadership as modelled by Jesus. As well as this, input was provided by Mr Wake, Mrs Keogh, Mr Newton, Miss Paragalli and myself at various points throughout the camp. In addition to the teaching aspect of the camp, prefects spent lots of time getting to know one another building the teamwork and cohesiveness needed to work effectively for the next year.

Finally prefects were given time to draft initial plans for the various activities and projects they would like to conduct between now and next July. Once this was completed our captains and vice captains were required to conduct their first official meeting to look at how to put these plans into action.

Since returning to school the prefects have wasted no time with the launch of their first initiative, the drought relief project, at the Principal’s Assembly last Friday. This two week drive, to be conducted both this and next week, is asking the school community to provide non-perishable food items that will then be passed on to “Aussie Helpers” for distribution to farmers in need. Please bring all items to Mrs Ash in the foyer of Students Services by next Friday, 24th of August.

Our prefects are certainly off to a great start and we look forward to seeing all that they achieve in the next year.

From the Senior Prefects

At the moment, 100 percent of NSW is affected by the current droughts. This past July of 2018 has been the driest period that our nation has experienced since 2002.

Thousands of livestock are being slaughtered, farmers in financial ruin and spiralling into severe depression, failing crops, a short supply of water and locals waiting up to two weeks for delivery of drinking water at $250 a time. This is the worst drought in decades. The NSW government has almost doubled its funding to struggling farmers with a total of $1 billion allocated towards the growing national crisis.

As students at St Paul’s we are well practised in helping and supporting others in need when we are in an able condition to do so.Over the next few weeks, the senior leadership team will be collecting any non-perishable items to contribute to the drought relief drive. Items you could donate would include any canned items, pasta, sauces, nuts, rice, long life milk, bottled water, cereals, shampoo and conditioner as well as many other long-life items. As part of an Australian school community, it is important to donate and contribute as much resources as we can to support the battling farmers of our state. All donations will be collected and distributed by the Aussie Helpers charity to go towards farmers and their families.

All donations should be taken to tutor classes where they will be collected by senior prefects or sent straight to the Student Services Office before Friday 21st of August.

We trust you all will contribute to this cause with great generosity and we are confident that as a community we will be able to band together to provide for those in need.
