From the PrincipalIt was wonderful to see so many of our sporting teams
in their grand final matches last weekend.
This is such a great achievement and the students involved
should be very proud of their efforts. Out of the six teams
playing, five were successful in winning their final match, which
is a very pleasing outcome. Sport of course, is about more than
just victory, there is so much more that flows out of the strong
sporting programme within our school community.
As I watched the games being played throughout the day it
was evident that the students involved had developed a strong
culture of support for one another– continually encouraging
each other to keep going, despite the circumstances. They
were not discouraged by a mistake or disheartened when
the opposing side scored, but rather they kept thier heads
up and gave it their best. These surely are terrific life lessons
for our young people to learn. I am continually impressed
by our students' amazing ability to rise above their current
circumstance and to play with determination, grit, integrity and
fairness.
In addition to this, I believe that our sporting programme
provides a unique opportunity for our school families to
make strong connections with each other as they gather each
weekend to support their children. Week after week, they
spend time with each other and build relationships and share
some of life’s journey together. It can at times be difficult for
parents to connect with each other and to connect into the life
of the school and sport can provide this opportunity. When
our families get involved in the school, it continues to build on
our strong sense of community.

From the Principal Continues
My final comment in relation to sport is to thank the staff of
St Paul’s who give generously to our sporting programme.
Whether it be coaching, managing, barbecuing or just turning
up to watch, their contribution is significant and greatly
appreciated. It is pleasing to see the St Paul’s sporting
programme grow year after year, with increasing participation
from our students.
This week, in the Junior School, it was fantastic to see the participation from our students and staff in the Book Week Parade and associated activities.
It is always fascinating to see the myriad of costumes coming
into school. Again a huge thank you to the staff who made this
day possible to the delight of our students.

Father’s Day Stall
The Father’s Day stall was held earlier this week and it was strongly supported by the students, with many gifts being sold.
Thank you to all the helpers who
organised and ran the stall, along with
the Year 6 leaders. A special thank you
to Mrs Redman, Mrs Jakobsson and Mr
Place for coordinating the event.
We appreciate the amount of effort put
into an event like this.
Year 6 Camp
Year 6 students from our school have recently undertaken an education tour of the national capital.
Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational
programmes with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The
Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being
able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education.
Under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate programme, the Australian
Government contributes $20 to assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion.
The rebate will be paid directly to the school.
As well as visiting Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, National Electoral
Education Centre, Questacon, the National Gallery of Australia and the Deep Space
Centre, students were provided with the opportunity to see and experience the
snow, a first for many! A highlight for all was the opportunity to spend time together
developing deeper friendships. The camp was a great success, according to the
students and accompanying teachers.

Book Week ParadeIt was an exciting morning in Junior School this week as our students and staff dressed up and attended our annual Book Week Parade. We even had some special visitors from France attend! There were so many clever and colourful costumes with lots of smiling faces. Thank you to parents, staff and students for making it such a special day and for all your hard work. A big thank you to Mrs McCaffery and Mrs Bonazza for organising the event.

Tim HarrisVisiting Author
We were privileged to have author and former St Paul’s teacher, Tim Harris, visit us on our Book Parade Day.
Not unlike Mr Bambuckle, who features in his popular series,
‘Mr Bambuckle’s Remarkables’, Tim inspired and delighted
our students and teachers with his whimsical creativity and
storytelling.
He described how he writes his stories - not just the process,
but where he sources his ideas - which has definitely
enthused some of our own budding writers! Two copies of
‘Toffle Towers’ have been purchased for the library, but the
feeling is it will be difficult to keep them on the shelves!

Elective Subject Choices for 2020
Year 10 students were advised this week of their course
and subject choices for Year 11, 2020.
As in previous years, a full range of subjects is available to
students in both the HSC and the IB Diploma courses. Subjects
and line combinations are available on my.stpauls for students
and families to check. Virtually all students received their full
list of subject preferences, with the few who did not, receiving
their first or second reserve choices.
St Paul’s offers a much larger range of subjects than
most schools and uses timetabling software and years
of experience to develop the timetable around student
individual preferences. Each year our timetable is different
to the previous year in contrast to many other schools which
have pre-set subjects and lines that students must follow,
making timetabling easier for the school but forcing students
into pre-assigned subject combinations. Senior classes are
sometimes quite small to meet student choices to ensure
that a full subject range is available. In the HSC, Vocational
Education and Training (VET) classes are available at St Paul’s in
Hospitality and at partner schools in other VET courses, further
enhancing the range of subjects on offer to our students.
In some cases, if student choice cannot be met within the
timetable we meet with students and families to explore other
options, such as online delivery of courses (we currently have a
small number of students studying a courses online) or external
providers.
NESA Year 8/MYP Year 3 students also received confirmation
this week of their two elective choices for NESA Year 9/
MYP Year 9 2020. Just as with senior lines, their subject
combinations have been determined to best meet student
elective requests. All students received their first preference
and 89% of students received their first preference for their
second elective choice, with the remaining 11% of students
missing their second choice but being awarded their third
choice. No students required use of the fourth and final
preference.
Year 12 Holiday Study Camps
Each year various organisations run study camps to support Year 12 students as they prepare for their final examinations.
CRU study Camps are offering holiday revision camps
specifically for HSC and IB Diploma students in Year 12. The
school cannot endorse these courses, but students may be
keen to attend.
Brochures for these camps are available from the Student
Office. In previous years, St Paul’s students have found these
helpful, however they sell out quickly.

School Recommendation Scheme for Year 12 Students The School Recommendation Scheme (SRS) is available to all Year 12 students and allows students considering some (but not all) universities to be considered by more than their ATAR.
These universities take into consideration if the student has been a consistent worker at school, but may not have received marks that indicate their application or ability. Some offers are conditional. Some are unconditional. We recommend that all students looking at university study apply using the SRS. Any
student can apply for the SRS.
SRS applications are completed online here.

ISA Winter Sport Grand Finals
What an amazing weekend of sport it was for St Paul’s at last weekend’s grand finals. You may recall in my article in the last edition of Revelations that seven of our teams had qualified for the ISA winter sports competition semi-finals. I am pleased to report that six of those teams, four football teams and two netball teams (many of whom were underdogs), progressed through to the grand finals.
With the netball grand finals being held at Genea Netball Centre in Homebush and the football grand finals taking place at Blacktown, Mr Wake racked up plenty of kilometres as he traversed up and down the M4 motorway multiple times in an effort to cram in as much sports action as he possibly could. This was a challenge given the fact that the timing of many of our grand finals clashed with one another. Given this, Mr Wake did an amazing job and there were many text messages exchanged with score updates throughout the day.
I was fortunate enough to see just over three soccer grand finals. These commenced with our Junior Girls team taking on Blue Mountains Grammar. After scraping into the semi-finals our girls started the game as outsiders, despite upsetting the minor premiers the week before, having been soundly beaten by Blue Mountains previously. Our girls commenced very strongly and dominated the early stages of the game before scoring at around the seven-minute mark. From there, the match was a real arm wrestle in the mid-field with neither team having many clear scoring opportunities. Our girls hung on determinedly to score an upset 1-0 victory. A great achievement given it was the first time St Paul’s had ever fielded a Junior Girls Football team!
Almost simultaneously, our Open Girls Netball team took on Barker for the title at Homebush. After leading by a mere two points at half-time, our girls were seriously challenged in the second half in a very tight match that ebbed and flowed. With three minutes to go, it looked as though our girls might have to settle for runners-up as they trailed Barker by two goals. However, St Paul’s rallied late, taking some key intercepts and then converting them into points on the scoreboard. St Paul’s only put the match beyond doubt with a final goal with less than 30 seconds on the clock ultimately recording a courageous 43-41 win.
The next grand final was the Boys 15’s football team. This was quite literally a David and Goliath battle with our team being significantly outsized by their Redfield opponents. Our team was extremely courageous and managed to match Redfield in a scoreless first half. Unfortunately, early in the second half, Redfield scored and then added another a few minutes later to run out 2-0 victors. Despite the loss our boys did an amazing job to make the Grand Final from fourth position, especially given their team had several members who were playing up a year or two in age.
The fourth grand final of the day saw our Junior Netballers up against St Andrew’s College. This was always going to be a challenge given that St Andrew’s had dropped down from a higher division due to a mid-season regrading. The writing appeared to be on the wall in the early stages of the match with our girls trailing at quarter time before narrowing the gap slightly in the

Continued
second quarter. The longer the game went the better St Paul’s got and, in what turned out to be absolute nail biter, scores were locked at 22-all at fulltime sending the match into extra time. It was here that our girls excelled, eventually running out 28-24 winners.
Our final two grand finals took place almost concurrently with the Boys Seconds and the Girls Firsts footballers starting a mere 20 minutes apart. The Boys Seconds played Central Coast Grammar. After a goal-less first half, St Paul’s were the first to strike in the second half only to see Central Coast equalise soon after. Locked at one-all, late in the second half, the match looked destined to be heading for extra time, but Keunwoo Song had other ideas scoring what turned out to be the winning goal with two minutes to go.
The Girls Firsts started as favourites in their match having gone through their season undefeated. They faced a talented and much improved Oxley College side who had only gone down to St Paul’s 1-0 at their previous encounter just prior to finals. It is fair to say that our girls definitely peaked on the grand final day. The anticipated tight struggle failed to eventuate thanks to a totally dominant performance from St Paul’s. After leading 3-0 at half time, our girls snuffed out any chance of a comeback by scoring early in the second half and eventually ran out impressive 5-0 winners over a very courageous Oxley College who, to their great credit, fought valiantly until the end.
Whilst it is obviously great to achieve sporting success and see five of our six teams successful in grand finals, what is even more pleasing is to see the way in which our sports teams conduct themselves both on and off the sporting arena. All the grand finals were played in an extremely good spirit by our teams independent of the result. All teams played as hard as they could but fairly and all were humble and gracious in victory or defeat. Added to this is the wonderful camaraderie that is shown amongst teammates, many of whom come from a variety of year groups, yet all get along so well when playing in the same team.
It would be remiss of me not to give a massive congratulations to Mrs Tantalos who is doing such a wonderful job in her first year as our Co-ordinator of the Sports Academy. Congratulations also to all the individual coaches, our MIC’s of football and netball, Mr Crimmins and Miss Paragalli, and of course, to all the students who played winter sport this season for their wonderful efforts.
