‘Petrenko “dazzles” Torontowith the Rite of SpringIt made me think again about what it is,exactly, that makes a great conductor.I asked [Lorin] Maazel - what is thatspecial extra something. He paused fora second. It's a good question, and Ihave no idea what it is. No one knowswhat it is that makes a conductorspecial, except that you know it whenyou hear it. Petrenko has it.’Sound MindToronto Classical Music Journal

‘Slender and boyish looking, Petrenkostudied with Esa-Pekka Salonen, and hehas picked up some of the qualities of athirtysomething Salonen, particularlycertain hand and arm gestures.Rhythmic incisiveness and a strongforward drive are among his strongsuits. And that has worked well for him.He is a popular chief conductor of theLiverpool Philharmonic; hisTchaikovsky and Shostakovichrecordings are celebrated. Petrenko hadthe L.A. Philharmonic sounding crispand muscular, yet in slow, lyricalpassages, he was able to entice avibrating string sound that had bothgrit and emotion.’ The Los Angeles Times reviews Vasily Petrenko's performance withUkrainian pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk and the LA Philharmonic ofTchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No.1 to an audience of over 7500 at theHollywood Bowl.

Our Chief Conductor’s dynamicmusical partnership with theRoyal Liverpool PhilharmonicOrchestra, now in its 6th year, isproving to be a golden era in thelong history of LiverpoolPhilharmonic, and a major forceto be reckoned with both in theconcert hall and in the recordingstudio.
