Reviewer of the month e October 2012: Jim McCaul

Jim McCaul is a Consultant Maxillofacial/Head and NeckSurgeon in Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Heis also lead for research and Clinical Trials inMaxillofacial/Head andNeck Surgery and holds research positions at the Institute forCancer Therapeutics (ICT) in the University of Bradford and theLeeds Institute forMolecular Medicine. He is a boardmember of theEthical Tissue Collection Bank at the University of Bradford ICT. Heis Head and Neck research lead for Yorkshire Cancer Network andSpecialty Chair for the Comprehensive Clinical Research Network ofthe National Institute for Health Research.

He studied medicine and dentistry both at the University ofGlasgowgraduatedwith Honours in both degrees. After completionof the West of Scotland Basic surgical training scheme he obtainedFDSRCPS and then FRCS examinations. He then trained in the Westof Scotland Maxillofacial programme and also spent time in Miamiand London. He completed his doctoral work in the CRUK BeatsonInstitute for Cancer Research graduating PhD in 2005. He is theauthor four book chapters and over 40 publications in the fieldincluding papers in Lancet Oncology, Cancer research, OralOncology and the British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.His work on telomere biology in Head and Neck Cancer won theScottish Oral and Maxillofacial Society prize on three occasions andthe golden award at the 2nd European Head and Neck CancerConference in Lille.

He leads a research team of seven in Bradford and is Chiefinvestigator for the LIHNCS trial funded by Cancer Research UK andfor the Supportive Care Follow up study funded by MacmillanCancer Support. In addition he is Co-Investigator in three otherrandomized controlled trials and site Principle Investigator foranother eight clinical trials. He is Since 2004 he has been a memberof the Advanced Craniomaxillofacial Forum Technical AdvisoryCommittee. He is a Section Editor for the British Journal of Oral andMaxillofacial Surgery and reviews for a number of other.

His Clinical work in Maxillofacial/Head and Neck Surgery isfocused on early diagnosis and resection and free flap reconstruc-tion for head and neck cancer with emphasis on functionaloutcomes for life after cancer.

Research clinical interests include the use of Lugol’s Iodine toreduce margin dysplasia at cancer resection margins (LIHNCS trial),the role for intraoperative optimization in major head and neckcancer surgery and novel patterns for follow up in head and neckcancer patients. His laboratory collaborations include work onchemokine inhibitors to reduce metastasis rates and mass spec-troscopy analysis of novel cancer targets for small moleculeinhibitors with the Institute for Cancer Therapeutics at theUniversity of Bradford. He collaborates with the Leeds Institute forMolecular Medicine on gene copy number analysis and theUniversity of Glasgow on Sirtuin proteins.
