A Description of theMachineDesignThe RG1625 SUPER Jr.TM stump cutter isdesigned for your maximum benefit for every dollarspent. The machine is constructed for durabilityand easy maneuvering, for those hard to reachtree stumps and roots. Its 17" diameter cuttingwheel with 18 Rayco Superteeth is powerfullydriven through dual V-belts and a low maintenancePolyChain® GT® belt with tough Kevlar® cords, starting and stopping via an electric clutch, with a25 horsepower Kohler Command 25HP OHVV-TWIN engine at its source. Cutting boom motionand the self-propel drive are entirely hydraulic. Thehydraulic controls each include self-centeringfingertip control levers.

The machine chassis features rectangular steeltubing and steel guard construction, mounted onextra gripping deep tread tires. The operatorbenefits from a steel cutting wheel guard andheavy rubber curtains, such that his work may beperformed with safety and efficiency. The RG1625A SUPER Jr. has the unique ability to passthrough a 36" gate under its own power. Otherspecial features of the RG 1625A SUPER Jr.include dual cross travel cylinders, sphericalbearing in the pivot head, hardened replaceablebushing on all cylinder ends, flange type bearingson the axle, 6-1/2 gallon fuel tank, steel belt andPolyChain® guards, and an easy access ignitionswitch on the engine control panel. Amongavailable options are dual removable travel wheelsfor increased stability and travel traction, commandcut, and additional chip guards.

NOTICEThe hood end is considered to be the front ofthe machine, while the cutting end is the rear.Accordingly, the left and right hand sides of themachine are considered to be the same as theoperator's left and right hand side when hestands at the rear of the machine, facingtowards the front.

For further design information see the"Specifications" section of the MaintenanceManual.

How it worksThe machine removes tree stumps by the repeatedgradual sweeping of a multi-toothed high-speedrotating cutting wheel. The cutting wheel has teethon its side, in a strategic pattern. The rotatingcutting wheel takes a sweep from one side of thestump to the other, each tooth rapidly tearing andstripping away small pieces of stump. After eachsweep of 1/4 to 1/2 inches of depth, the cuttingwheel is advanced 1/4 to 1/2 inches further into thestump, and the procedure is simply repeated againand again, under the precise control of theoperator, until the stump is satisfactorily removed.

Serial Numbers

Whenever communicating with RAYCO or yourRAYCO dealer, have your machine serial numberhandy, as it can help pinpoint most exactly whatinformation is needed in caring for your machine.

It is stamped on the operator's side of the framebehind the bumper. Follow the instructions found inthe Kohler Engine Owner's Manual for locating andrecording the engine identification numbers. Forready reference, record them both in the boxesprovided on the inside front cover of this manual.

• self-propel drive wheels securely chocked

• parked on extremely level ground

• self-propel engage pin and bolt engaged(positioned in deeper slot)

If the hydraulic system develops a leak, themachine may become free to roll if the wheelsare not securely chocked.

2. The boom should be resting on the ground orotherwise secured. Do not depend on thehydraulic system to hold the boom inposition; if a hose becomes ruptured or alever is moved it could drop or swing, resulting in personal injury.

3. The start key switch should be in the OFFposition and engine and all moveable partsstopped.

4. The engine start key should be removed andin safekeeping.

5. The battery should be disconnected to avoidaccidental starts.

6. Periodically check the machine for missing, loose or worn bolts, cracked hoses, andloose connections. The cutting wheel shouldbe checked closely for worn or broken teeth, loose pocket bolts, and cracked pockets.

7. Leaking hydraulic fluid that is under highpressure may escape visual detection andmay have enough force to penetrate the skinsurface. Always use a piece of cardboard orwood to detect leaks. See "General HazardInformation - Fluid Penetration" in this"Safety" section for more details.

8. Always relieve the pressure in the hydraulicsystem before loosening line connections orworking on the system by pressing andreleasing each of the hydraulic control valvelevers, with engine OFF. Before the systemis repressurized, check connections fortightness and hoses for serviceablecondition.

• Swing the cutting wheel to one side, thenlower it approximately 1/2" into the near-side roots that are buried at the foot of thestump, and swing the cutting wheel acrossthem, lowering cutting wheelapproximately 1/2" before each sweep, until they are sufficiently removed.

• Raise cutting wheel to where center ofcutting wheel is just above top of stump.

3. Cut the stump proper:

• With the cutting wheel off to one side, advance it horizontally so that when sweptacross the stump it will remove 1/4" to 1/2"of the stump.

• Sweep the cutting wheel across the stump, cutting away 1/4" to 1/2" of wood.

• Advance the cutting wheel 1/4" to 1/2",and sweep across the stump in theopposite direction.

• Continue sweeping the cutting wheel leftand right across the stump, advancing itbefore each sweep, cutting 1/4" to 1/2"depth of wood with each sweep, until thetop level of the stump is all removed.

• Raise the cutting wheel, and retract themachine from the stump until at the nearedge of the remaining stump.

4. Cut another level of stump, by repeating step3.

Normal Procedure forCutting a Stump

Never leave the controls when the cuttingwheel is rotating!

1. Prepare the machine at the stump:

• Drive the machine into position with thecutting wheel near the top edge of thestump.

Helpful Tips for OperatingMachine

• Open the cross travel SPEED controlvalve one half turn. Fine adjustments canthen be made depending on operatorpreference.

• Open the machine travel speed controlvalve to control movement into the stump.

• Use smooth, comfortable speeds whileoperating.

• When it is desired to cut smaller roots, itmay be more effective to do so before, rather than after, cutting the stump.

• When chasing long roots across a yard, cut them while driving the entire machinein self-propel mode.

• Should the chip buildup become excessivewhen cutting, shut off the cutting wheel, wait for the cutting wheel to stop rotation, retract the machine from the stump, stopthe engine, and rake away the chips. Startthe engine, advance the machine towardthe stump again, and resume cutting.

• On larger stumps, when cutting from oneside, eventually a tire may tend to roll intothe hole. This may be prevented bymoving the machine to another side of thestump to continue removal, or by filling thehole with chips before continuing.

• For making turns most easily, disengagethe left self-propel wheel from drive mode(see page 18).

• To move the entire end of the machinesideways, stop the cutting wheel, move itto the side in the direction of destination, and lower it into the ground to raise onetire slightly. Then, using the cutting wheelcross-travel lever, pull the machinesideways, dragging the other tire. (Thismaneuver should be used only whereconditions allow.)

• In colder weather the machine may besluggish at first. Operating all machinecontrols, one at a time, will cause thehydraulic oil to warm up quickly. Operatethe machine lightly until the hydraulic oil iswarm.

Machine Stopping1. When stopping the machine after normal

operation, lower the engine speed to SLOW,and cycle each of the hydraulic controlsslowly for about 30 seconds each to help thehydraulic components to cool slowly.

2. Flip the cutting wheel ON/OFF Switch downto the OFF position, stopping the cuttingwheel rotation.

Due to high speed low-friction rotation, thecutting wheel may continue to rotateunnoticed, even after the ON/OFF switch hasbeen flipped OFF, and even after the enginehas stopped. Be sure to bring cutting wheelrotation to a complete stop before moving themachine or leaving the controls!

3. Stop the cutting wheel rotation quickly bygently lowering the cutting wheel into thesoil.

4. Close fully the cutting wheel cross-travelSPEED control valve.

5. Either center and raise the cutting wheel tothe fully UP position and install the cuttingboom lock block, or lower it to the ground.

6. Reduce the engine speed.

Engine Stopping

1. Reduce the engine speed to slow idle.

NOTICEBefore stopping an engine that has beenoperating at working load, allow the engine tocontinue running with the throttle at midwaybetween SLOW and FAST at least 15 seconds.

2. Turn the engine start switch to the OFFposition to stop the engine. Remove theengine start key.
