The Institute of Advanced Archi-tecture of Catalonia is involved in a research project to transform the city of Barcelona in a Zero Emis-sion city. For that, an interactive model has to be fabricated, so design decisions can be made. In this tutorial, we will describe the step by step of how to send the 3D model of the barrios of Camp del’Arpa, La Sagrera, Congrés and Navas, to the milling machine so it could be printed.

sTep 1:Model the area using Rhinoceros. Load RhinoCam2 by tiping the command on the command bar.
sTep 2:Choose the machine type in the Setup tab > Machine Type > 3 Axis.
sTep 3:For the post processor choose the option Precix.
sTep 4:The stock can be set or by typing the measures manually or by picking a mod-elled stock volume as a reference, which happened for our case.
sTep 5: Horizontal roughing is for fast and efficient removal of material as a preparation for th emore refined second milling step. A thicker tool with 26 mm of diameter was used.
sTep 6:Horizontal roughing, cut levels.
sTep 7:Horizontal roughing, cut parameters.
sTep 8: Parallel finishing is the final milling process, with refined resolution. The tool used for this case was a thin 3 mm ball point.
sTep 9: Parallel finishing, clearance.
sTep 10:Parallel finishing, cut parameters.
sTep 11:To visualize a simulation of the milling process, first select the horizontal roughing option and then press Play.
sTep 12: If the simulation of the roughing process works, select the parallel finishing option and simulate. The file is ready to export.

After the model was printed in a high density foam, it was inserted in the model of the entire city of Barcelona. The scale of this model is 1/2000, and it will be used as a study model. A final interactive model will be built, and this will help in the design decision.
