The Competition
The RHS is on the quest to find the best emerging talent from the Landscape
arena - the RHS Young Landscape Contractor 2017. Now in it’s 2nd year the
competition continues to grow from strength to strength!
• Open to new and experienced contractors aged under 28 years
• Three Young Landscape Contractor finalists
• Each finalist partnered with a Young Planting Designer to create a complete
garden together at the Show based on a set design and brief.
• The design and brief created by 2016’s RHS Young Designer, Caitlin McLaughlin
• £5,000 set budget/RHS Grant for landscaping and construction materials.
• Mentorship throughout the process
• Judged for RHS Medals. One finalist crowned RHS Young Landscape Contractor
2017
• Setting: RHS Flower Show Tatton Park (19-23 July 2017)
The Challenge
The competition will challenge Young Planting
Designers and Young Landscape Contractors to
work together to build and deliver a garden. For
finalists it will be an exceptional opportunity to
showcase skills and talent in their respective area
of specialism.
Each Young Landscape Contractor will be
partnered with a Young Planting Designer 2017
finalist. The Planting finalist will be responsible
for designing and executing the soft landscaping
elements of the garden.
The three pairs of finalists will each receive the
same design layout to create at the show; there
will be the freedom to work as a pair to choose
hard materials and plants to reflect a theme that
will be given to each pair.

landscape and design world.
Expert mentorship, advice and support is
available throughout the process from RHS
award-winning landscape designer,
gardener and plantsman, Jody Lidgard.
An important part of the competition is the
partnership with the RHS Young
Landscape Contractors. Finalists will need
to work together on all aspects of the
garden. Each garden will be judged for an
RHS Medal.
For the title of Young Landscape
Contractor, each finalist is assessed
separately and the winning RHS Young
Landscape Contractor 2017 and RHS
Young Planting Designer 2017 may be
from different gardens.

Katie Maude
RHS Young Planting Designer 2016
"It was brilliant and fulfilling to be part
of an RHS Flower Show. Not only did I
learn a lot from the process of planning
and creating a show garden along side
a Young Contractor, but I met some
lovely, like-minded people along the
way”.
